Taken out of Silesia at the end of World War II and stored in West Germany, the chest of the Greiffenberg Merchant Confraternity contains books and documents from almost 200 years of the Merchant Confraternity’s activity. These texts form the basis for research into the history of the German language in Silesia, in particular in the field of text linguistics. This paper presents historical, economic, social and cultural conditions that had an impact on the production of these texts and presents the results of the diachronic analysis of “receipt report” as text sub-genre, carried out on the “Book of Receipt Reports” from 1756-1944.

The article starts from a conception of language according to which the semiotic units that speakers use do not emanate from individual mental processes but from the socialization of representation instruments which, being individual elements initially, have later been involved in processes of communicative circulation. The subject matter of analysis is oronyms, i.e. the names of mountains and hills deriving from the names of plants and animals. The names of mountains can perform the function of localization (a relation between an object and the toponym), characterization (the topographic character of an object, the shape of an object, the quality of substrate, the fauna and flora in an area), they can express the relation between an object and a man (possessive names) and they can be a reflection of material or spiritual culture. Leisure trip through Upper Silesia is the text of a German author anonymously published in the „Schlesische Provinzial-Blätter” in 1805 (No. 41; German title – Lustreise durch Oberschlesien). Until now, it was perceived in the political dimension. It was believed that the text was to present glorious development of the region under Prussian rule and, therefore, it was interpreted as a justification for the benefits born out of conquest. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of text linguistics from a broader perspective than usual, offering a complete reference framework. The paper examines aspectual and selectional properties of Old Catalan prefixed verbs in comparison with their non prefixed counterparts. We ground our analysis on Talmy’s (1985, 2000) notion of verb framed and satellite framed languages and on Mateu (2002, 2003) and Mateu & Rigau (2002) theory of lexical structure, and we argue that telicity and other aspectual properties associated with prefixed verbs are by effects derived from the semantic value of the prefix together with the lexical structure they give rise to.
