Factors controlling plankton productivity, particulate matter stoichiometry, and export fluxin the coastal upwelling system off Peru
2020
Abstract. Eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS) are among the most productive marine ecosystems on Earth. The high productivity in surface waters is facilitated by upwelling of nutrient-rich deep waters, with high light availability enabling fast phytoplankton growth and nutrient utilization. However, there are numerous biotic and abiotic factors modifying productivity and biogeochemical processes. Determining these factors is important because EBUS are considered hotspots of climate change, and reliable predictions on their future functioning requires understanding of the mechanisms driving biogeochemical cycles therein. In this study, we used in situ mesocosms to obtain mechanistic un…

Natural Language Parsing
2009
Automatic natural language processing captures a lion’s share of the attention in open information management. In one way or another, many applications have to deal with natural language input. In this chapter the authors investigate the problem of natural language parsing from the perspective of biolinguistics. They argue that the human mind succeeds in the parsing task without the help of languagespecific rules of parsing and language-specific rules of grammar. Instead, there is a universal parser incorporating a universal grammar. The main argument comes from language acquisition: Children cannot learn language specific parsing rules by rule induction due to the complexity of unconstrain…
From Biology to Linguistics: The Definition of Arthron in Aristotle's Poetics
2018
This volume is not intended as a philological or paleographical specialist contribution: it is a new attempt at reading Aristotle’s work as a whole. It consists of two chapters. The first chapter consists of three sections. First section discusses the main problems posed by the definition of arthron; second section considers the state of the text; third section examines the critical literature on that issue since the end of the nineteenth century. The second chapter is the actual pars construens of the work. It consists of five sections. The first section explores the close relationship that Aristotle holds between biology and language. Aristotle is not the father of the specialized sciences: H…
Sensitivity of ecosystem functioning to changes in trophic structure, functional group composition and species diversity in belowground food webs
2002
The objective of the present paper, using decomposer food webs as a tool, is to explore the levels of the ecological hierarchy (trophic groups, feeding guilds, species populations) at which reduction in complexity brings about significant changes in ecosystem performance. A review is given of various mini-ecosystem studies that have recently been conducted at the University of Jyvaskyla. It is hypothesized that the typical features of soils as a habitat, and the peculiarities of belowground food webs, such as the commonness of indirect interactions (mediated through abiotic resources) among the biota, together with the high frequency of polyphagy/omnivory among soil organisms, produce a div…
Dynamic Responsive Inguinal Scaffold Activates Myogenic Growth Factors Finalizing the Regeneration of the Herniated Groin
2022
Background: Postoperative chronic pain caused by fixation and/or fibrotic incorporation of hernia meshes are the main concerns in inguinal herniorrhaphy. As inguinal hernia is a degenerative disease, logically the treatment should aim at stopping degeneration and activating regeneration. Unfortunately, in conventional prosthetic herniorrhaphy no relationship exists between pathogenesis and treatment. To overcome these incongruences, a 3D dynamic responsive multilamellar scaffold has been developed for fixation-free inguinal hernia repair. Made of polypropylene like conventional flat meshes, the dynamic behavior of the scaffold allows for the regeneration of all typical inguinal components: …
