Chreod.
2020
The concept of chreod was introduced in 1957 by the English theoretical biologist Conrad Hal Waddington (cf. Waddington: 1957; Galperin: 2008). From a linguistic point of view, the word “chreod” is a neologism, or, more precisely, a compound formed by the combination of two Greek words: the verb chre- (“it is necessary, must”) and the substantive -hodos (“way, road”). Therefore, it means literally “obliged pathway” (cf. Fabris 2018: 252, n. 6). Of course, such an etymology covers only a little bit of the semantic repertoire deployed by chreod. But, it is however true that some aspects of the biology of living systems can be described in these terms. Indeed, at the most general level, the id…
3,4-trans-4-Aryl-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates—new group of potential cardiotonic drugs
2005
Abstract 3,4- trans -4-Aryl-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates 6 – 11 were prepared by a Michael reaction of N -acetonylpyridinium chloride with 3-aryl-2-cyanothioacrylamides or by a one-pot three-carbon condensation of N -acetonylpyridinium chloride, aromatic aldehyde and 2-cyanothioacetamide, and their cardiotonic properties were studied. 3,4- trans -5-cyano-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-(1-pyridinio)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolate 8 was considered as a lead compound in this series since it in vitro experiments (spontaneously beating rat atria) showed a cardiotonic activity similar to that of milrinone 2 , however compound 8 induced activity at lover co…
The lack of the effect of DA-1 and DA-2 dopamine agonists on the isolated guinea-pig atria.
1987
1 The effects of dopamine and both DA-1 and DA-2 dopamine receptor agonists have been studied on the contractile force of electrically driven guinea-pig left atria and frequency of spontaneously beating right atria. 2 Pretreatment of animals with reserpine caused a parallel rightward shift of the concentration-response curve to dopamine of either preparation. 3 Propranolol, but not domperidone, shifted to the right the dose-response curve for the positive inotropic and chronotropic effects of dopamine. 4 Neither apomorphine, fenoldopam, bromocriptine nor piribedil had effects on the frequency and contractile force of the isolated guinea-pig atria. 5 These results suggest that DA-1 and DA-2 …
Study on the histamine-like activity of guanfacine
1990
Abstract The effects of guanfacine have been studied on guinea-pig isolated atria and diethylstilboestrol-treated rat isolated uterus to determine whether it possesses histamine-like activity. Guanfacine produced a concentration-dependent negative chronotropic effect which was not modified by ranitidine (0.1 μM). In rat isolated uterus contracted by KCl, clonidine (5–5000 μM) produced concentration-dependent relaxation which was blocked by ranitidine (0.1 μM), but guanfacine only produced relaxation at high concentrations (100–1000 μM), and this was not affected by ranitidine (0.1 μM). It is concluded that guanfacine, unlike clonidine, does not produce effects due to activation of H2-recept…
Effects of the Phosphodiesterase Inhibitor Enoximone on the Autonomic Innervation of the Isolated Heart
1989
Enoximone is a selective inhibitor of a low Km, cyclic AMP-specific type of phosphodiesterase (PDE III). In guinea pig and chicken atria, enoximone (0.1-100 mumol/L) caused a weak increase in the force of contraction. The heart rate was slightly enhanced or was unchanged (chicken). Enoximone (30 mumol/L) also failed to shift the concentration-response curves for the positive inotropic and chronotropic effects of norepinephrine in guinea pig atria. Under almost the same conditions, enoximone and the nonselective PDE inhibitor 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) markedly potentiated the forskolin-induced mobilization of choline from phospholipids. The concentrations of IBMX (100 mumol/L) and o…
The Polyphonic Theology of the Church Fathers
2014
Prof. Dr. Dres. H. c. Christoph Marschies (Humboldt University Berlin, Germany) in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Michael Welker (Heidelberg University, Germany) initiated an international project to which about 25 international scholars of high profile were invited to participate. The purpose of the project is to gain a new and nuanced perspective on the theology of 19 church fathers: Justin the Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyon, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian, Eusebius, Athanasius of Alexandria, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, John Chrysostom, Augustine, Cyril of Alexandria, Leo the Great, Theodoret of Cyrus, Boethius, Isidore, Maximus the Confessor and John Damascene. Research…
Diagnostic algorithm for familial chylomicronemia syndrome
2016
International audience; Background: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare genetic disease that leads to severe hypertriglyceridemia often associated with recurrent episodes of pancreatitis. The recognition and correct diagnosis of the disease is challenging due to its rarity, and to the lack of specificity of signs and symptoms. Lipid experts, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, pancreatologists, and general practitioners may encounter patients who potentially have FCS. Therefore, cooperation between experts and improved knowledge of FCS is essential in improving the diagnosis. Currently, a consensus on best practice for the diagnosis of FCS is lacking. Methods: Aiming to def…
Representation of Peronist unionism in Argentinian sociologist Roberto Carri’s works: From the “vandorismo” to the guerilla “Montoneros” (1967-1974)
2019
Contact-induced phenomena in the Alps
2019
The main question underlying this chapter is to what extent language contact can affect syntactic structure. To tackle this issue we examine two relevant phenomena found in two minority languages spoken in the region Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol: clitic climbing in Dolomitic Ladin and the use of the Romance complementizer ke in Cimbrian. Both phenomena are usually considered as the result of a contact-induced change influenced by the neighbouring Italo-Romance varieties. However, it is shown that the rising of clitic climbing is a language-internal process which is only accelerated by the contact with Italian. Similarly, the lexical borrowing of the complementizer ke in Cimbrian does not…
