Blow-up collocation solutions of nonlinear homogeneous Volterra integral equations

2011

In this paper, collocation methods are used for detecting blow-up solutions of nonlinear homogeneous Volterra-Hammerstein integral equations. To do this, we introduce the concept of "blow-up collocation solution" and analyze numerically some blow-up time estimates using collocation methods in particular examples where previous results about existence and uniqueness can be applied. Finally, we discuss the relationships between necessary conditions for blow-up of collocation solutions and exact solutions.

Mio Dio, puniscimi perché ho peccato! Rapporti illegittimi e senso di colpa negli anni dell'Impero

2017

The triad 'colonialism, guilt and consequent punishment, payable with mental or physical illness if not with death’, is frequently detectable in the literary texts that focus on the latest phase of Italian Colonialism. The interpretative approach proposed in this paper, is founded on two historical and social phenomena that characterized the second decade of the Fascist period, such as, the propaganda and the subsequent counter-propaganda, and the collaborationist relationship between Church and State that pivot, in literary imagination, in the metaphor of disease as a result of divine punishment for human sins. The examined novels – Tempo di uccidere di Ennio Flaiano (1947), Un mattino a I…

A Strange Case of Left Bowel Ischemia after Right Hernioplasty

2010

We report the first observed case of a young man who suffered of large and unsuspected left bowel ischemia following an elective right open hernioplasty. A 54-year-old man had a 2-year history of right inguinal reducible mass and was admitted to hospital for an elective day case open inguinal hernioplasty for a direct right inguinal hernia. Apart from mild hypertension controlled with ACE inhibitor, he was medically fit and well. The patient was submitted to open tension-free mesh repair with polypropylene preshaped mesh with local infiltration anesthesia and additive sedation with midazolam. The local anesthesia and surgery were uneventful and he was discharged home on the same day as per …

J-MADeM, a market-based model for complex decision problems

2010

This paper presents J-MADeM, a multi-modal decision making mechanism to provide agents in a Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) with a market-based model for complex decision problems. J-MADeM is now available as an open source library fully integrated into Jason, the successful interpreter for the AgentSpeak programming language. The aim of this work is to improve Jason by incorporating an agent decision-making module able to merge multiple information sources received from the rest of the agents. This information is modeled as a set of utility functions expressing the preferences of the agents for a specific problem. Then, J-MADeM agents use one-round sealed-bid combinatorial auctions as the main p…

Languages with mismatches

2007

AbstractIn this paper we study some combinatorial properties of a class of languages that represent sets of words occurring in a text S up to some errors. More precisely, we consider sets of words that occur in a text S with k mismatches in any window of size r. The study of this class of languages mainly focuses both on a parameter, called repetition index, and on the set of the minimal forbidden words of the language of factors of S with errors. The repetition index of a string S is defined as the smallest integer such that all strings of this length occur at most in a unique position of the text S up to errors. We prove that there is a strong relation between the repetition index of S an…

Balance Properties and Distribution of Squares in Circular Words

2008

We study balance properties of circular words over alphabets of size greater than two. We give some new characterizations of balanced words connected to the Kawasaki-Ising model and to the notion of derivative of a word. Moreover we consider two different generalizations of the notion of balance, and we find some relations between them. Some of our results can be generalised to non periodic infinite words as well.

Coding Partitions: Regularity, Maximality and Global Ambiguity

2007

The canonical coding partition of a set of words is the finest partition such that the words contained in at least two factorizations of a same sequence belong to a same class. In the case the set is not uniquely decipherable, it partitions the set into one unambiguous class and other parts that localize the ambiguities in the factorizations of finite sequences. We firstly prove that the canonical coding partition of a regular set contains a finite number of regular classes. We give an algorithm for computing this partition. We then investigate maximality conditions in a coding partition and we prove, in the regular case, the equivalence between two different notions of maximality. As an ap…
