Hardwiring the Brain: Endocannabinoids Shape Neuronal Connectivity
2007
The roles of endocannabinoid signaling during central nervous system development are unknown. We report that CB 1 cannabinoid receptors (CB 1 Rs) are enriched in the axonal growth cones of γ-aminobutyric acid–containing (GABAergic) interneurons in the rodent cortex during late gestation. Endocannabinoids trigger CB 1 R internalization and elimination from filopodia and induce chemorepulsion and collapse of axonal growth cones of these GABAergic interneurons by activating RhoA. Similarly, endocannabinoids diminish the galvanotropism of Xenopus laevis spinal neurons. These findings, together with the impaired target selection of cortical GABAergic interneurons lacking CB 1 Rs, identify endoc…
Socio-affective characteristics and properties of extrinsic feedback in physiotherapy
2000
Background and Purpose The usual approach in physiotherapy is to communicate the desired action by means of some combination of verbal instruction and explanation, visual demonstration and manual assistance. Patients' and physiotherapists' communication and acts express socio-affective elements which influence the atmosphere governing this interaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the socio-affective characteristics of the verbal, visual and manual feedback given to their patients by physiotherapists in the performance of their duties. Method Data were collected by videotaping patient–physiotherapist interaction. Systematic observation was used to depict physiotherapists' an…
Ikääntyvät ja työhyvinvointi : 45-64-vuotiaiden työssäjaksamiskokemuksia
2017
The aim of this study was to offer an additional point of view of the age political discourse on work endurance, initiated by Finland’s public administration in the early 2000s. The personal experiences of the staff of a multi-professional work community were exploited to find clues to occupational well-being and endurance at work. Seventeen employees aged 45—64 at the actual work community were chosen as data or material for study, i.e. to be interviewed. A phenomenological-hermeneutical approach was applied to shed light on how to create well-being at work. Personal experiences of work endurance were analyzed and interpreted along the guidelines of the stepwise method used in phenomenolog…
It takes the Entire University Community to Educate Students in Becoming Academics
2018
Poster at The 8th Edition of The Future of Education International Conference. Florence, Italy, June 28-29, 2018. Development of scientific thinking is considered an essential but challenging aim of academic studies. In practice, this challenge becomes evident when students begin preparing their theses. Therefore, proper guidance combined with suitable guidance methods are needed. Based on students’ genuine necessities, a new collaborative model to implement guidance for students was developed at the Open Science Centre, Library at University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The model is constructed of three intertwined principles: 1) strengthening student agency, 2) producing diverse but explicit op…

Hip viscosupplementation under ultra-sound guidance riduces NSAID consumption in symptomatic hip osteoarthritis patients in a long follow-up. Data fr…
2011
Introduction: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) consumption is strictly related to a high gastrointestinal and cardiovascular mortality and morbidity rate. Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) recommendations in patients with symptomatic hip or knee OA stated that NSAIDs should be used at the lowest effective dose but their long-term use should be avoided if possible. OARSI guidelines for the treatment of the hip OA include the use of viscosupplementation, which aims to restore physiological and rheological features of the synovial fluid. Objective: Aim of this multicentric, open and retrospective study is to investigate if NSAID consumption may be reduced by t…

Monialaisen ohjauksen rakentuminen ohjaustilanteissa: onko monialainen ohjaus monialaista?
2022
Monialaisia ohjauspalveluita perustellaan niiden myönteisillä vaikutuksilla asiakkaisiin, työntekijöihin ja mukana oleviin palveluntuottajiin, mutta monialaista ohjausta koskeva empiirinen ja teoreettinen tutkimusnäyttö on toistaiseksi vähäistä. Tarkastelemme artikkelissamme sitä, miten eri tavoin monialaista ohjausta toteutetaan toiminnan tasolla. Aineiston muodostaa vuosina 2018–2019 kerätty havainnointiaineisto nuorten ohjaus- ja neuvontapalveluja tuottavan Ohjaamon ohjaustilanteista (n = 68). Kysymme, millaisiin erilaisiin tekoihin monialainen ohjaus jäsentyy ohjauksen työmuodon ja ammatillisten toimintatapojen perusteella, joita olivat ohjaajien lukumäärä, ohjauksen tavoite, ohjauksen …
The relationship between working alliance with peer mentors and eating psychopathology in a digital 6‐week guided self‐help intervention for anorexia…
2021
Objective: The quality of working alliance (WA) is associated with treatment outcomes across several types of psychiatric disorders and psychological interventions. This study examined the role of WA with peer mentors (people with lived experience of illness) and student mentors (graduated psychology students) in a 6-week, digital, guided self-help (GSH) intervention for anorexia nervosa. Method: Ninety-nine patients rated weekly, for 6 weeks: (a) eating psychopathology using the short version of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-QS) and (b) WA with a student mentor (n = 14) or a peer mentor (n = 10). WA was assessed by asking patients the extent to which they felt comforta…
Zero-Achievers Non-Progressing Studies in Finnish Open University : Three Preventive Factors
2021
Current education policy responds to changes and needs in working life by guiding individuals at different stages of working careers to develop their skills in the spirit of lifelong learning. More and more are applying with hope and enthusiasm to the Open University to strengthen their competence but are unable to get their studies completed. The article explores factors related to the non-progression of studies by students at the Open University in Finland. We call non-progressing students zero-achievers who enroll in studies but do not complete a single credit during the period of course. This research is a descriptive mixed methods study. The research data was collected by an online sur…
