Cadmium binding proteins induced in exposed freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii.

This work describes results on the characterization of cadmium binding proteins (Cd-BPs) obtained from cadmium exposed freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii. After acclimation to laboratory conditions, induction of Cd-BPs was achieved by water exposure at a concentration of 100 micrograms Cd/L during 2, 15, and 30 d. In accordance with the method followed by Engel and Brouwer, in each case two midgut glands were minced and homogenized in Tris-HC1 buffer with PMSF to prevent protease activity and DTT to maintain reducing conditions. Trillions of microbes inhabiting the gut modulate the metabolism of the host. Cross-sectional studies have reported associations between physical performance and the gut microbiota (GM). Physical activity seems to increase GM diversity and the abundance of certain health-beneficial microbes. We reviewed the evidence from longitudinal studies on the connection between physically active lifestyle or long-term exercise interventions and the GM. The cross-resistance spectrum and biochemical mechanism of resistance to the Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ab toxin was studied in a field-derived strain of Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) that was further selected in the laboratory for high levels (>1000-fold) of resistance to Cry1Ab. The resistant strain exhibited high levels of cross-resistance to Cry1Ac and Cry1Aa but only low levels of cross-resistance (<4-fold) to Cry1F. Degradation of dimeric lignin model compounds by aerobic bacteria isolated from the hindgut of xylophagous termites.

The capability of the intestinal flora from the gut of xylophagous termites of degrading lignin model compounds was investigated. Different dimeric lignin model compounds-degrading bacteria were obtained from the hindgut flora of Mastotermes darwiniensis FROGGATT, Reticulitermes santonensis FEYTAUD, Nasutitermes nigriceps HALDEMAN and Zootermopsis angusticollis HAGEN. In the presence of oxygen dimeric model compounds were degraded by all isolates. This indicates that the hindgut flora of termites is basically able to produce substrate for their host from aromatic extractives of wood.
