This article takes up a central question of Kirsti Siitonen’s dissertation – how advancedness in Finnish as a second language can be characterized – and investigates it from the perspective of research terminology as well as the lived experience of language users. We first discuss how and with what implications advanced learners of Finnish have been referred to in the research literature, i.e. whether they have been regarded as learners, speakers or other kinds of language users. Sentiment analysis has been more and more prominently visible among all natural language processing tasks. Sentiment analysis entails information extraction of opinions, emotions, and sentiments. In this paper, we aim to develop and test language models for low-resource language Finnish. We use the term “low-resource” to describe a language lacking in available resources for language modeling, especially annotated data. We investigate four models: the state-of-the-art FinBERT [1], and competitive alternative BERT models Finnish ConvBERT [2], Finnish Electra [3], and Finnish RoBERTa [4]. The study investigated young learners of Finnish as L2 from Russian-speaking families mostly in grades 3–6 in Finnish-medium schools. 169 pupils completed language tests in Finnish and Russian, and psycholinguistic measures of basic linguistic processes related to phonological awareness, retrieval of words from memory, and working memory. The study examined to what extent linguistic and psycholinguistic skills predict learners’ Finnish L2 reading and writing. Tomēr mūsdienās popularitāti ir guvis jauns komisku stāstu prezentēšanas formāts – interneta radio aplāde – kura stilistiskās un stāstījuma īpatnības joprojām tiek pētītas salīdzinoši minimāli. Tādēļ šī darba mērķis ir noskaidrot kā humors tiek veidots komēdijas aplādē „Laipni lūdzam nakts ielejā” (Welcome to Night Vale). Background: Groin pain is a frequent condition among athletes. One of the causes of groin pain is tendinopathy, a frequently diagnosed medical condition, which can also occur in the adductor muscles. Despite the high prevalence of this medical condition among athletes, it is infrequent to observe tendinopathic groin pain in steeplechase runners. Maģistra darba “Terminoloģijas konsekvence ekonomikas tekstu tulkojumos” mērķis ir novērtēt terminoloģijas konsekvenci 1990. gadu, 2000. gadu un 2010. gadu ekonomikas mācību grāmatu latviešu un krievu valodā korpusa ietvaros. Empīriskās izpētes rezultāti rāda, ka terminoloģijas konsekvence ekonomikas mācību grāmatās statistiski nozīmīgi palielinājās 2010. gados salīdzinājumā ar 1990. gadiem un 2000. gadiem. Pielietojot lingvistiskās diskursanalīzes metodoloģiju, kas ietver sevī gan kvantitatīvās, gan kvalitatīvās metodes, autore secināja, ka tulkošanas pētījumi spēj noteikt sociālās asimetrijas, pamatojoties uz lingvistiskajām asimetrijām. Fruit and vegetable intake is insufficient in industrialized nations and long-haul heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers are considered a particularly at-risk group. The aim of the current study was to test the effectiveness of a multi-theory, dual-phase model to predict fruit and vegetable consumption in Australian long-haul HGV drivers. A secondary aim was to examine the effect of past fruit and vegetable consumption on model paths. A prospective design with two waves of data collection spaced one week apart was adopted.
