Raman spectroscopy and crystal-field split rotational states of photoproducts CO and H2 after dissociation of formaldehyde in solid argon

Raman signal is monitored after 248 nm photodissociation of formaldehyde in solid Ar at temperatures of 9–30 K. Rotational transitions J = 2 ← 0 for para-H2 fragments and J = 3 ← 1 for ortho-H2 are observed as sharp peaks at 347.2 cm−1 and 578.3 cm−1, respectively, which both are accompanied by a broader shoulder band that shows a split structure. The rovibrational spectrum of CO fragments has transitions at 2136.5 cm−1, 2138.3 cm−1, 2139.9 cm−1, and 2149 cm−1. Nanoscale etching of III-V semiconductors in acidic hydrogen peroxide solution: GaAs and InP, a striking contrast in surface chemistry

In this study of nanoscale etching for state-of-the-art device technology, the importance of surface chemistry, in particular the nature of the surface oxide, is demonstrated for two III-V materials. Striking differences in etching kinetics were found for GaAs and InP in sulphuric and hydrochloric acidic solutions containing hydrogen peroxide. Under similar conditions, etching of GaAs was much faster, while the dependence of the etch rate on pH, and on H2O2 and acid concentrations also differed markedly for the two semiconductors. Stereoselective synthesis and transformation of pinane-based 2-amino-1,3-diols

A library of pinane-based 2-amino-1,3-diols was synthesised in a stereoselective manner. Isopinocarveol prepared from (−)-α-pinene was converted into condensed oxazolidin-2-one in two steps by carbamate formation followed by a stereoselective aminohydroxylation process. The relative stereochemistry of the pinane-fused oxazolidin-2-one was determined by 2D NMR and X-ray spectroscopic techniques. The regioisomeric spiro-oxazolidin-2-one was prepared in a similar way starting from the commercially available (1R)-(−)-myrtenol (10). DNA traces the origin of honey by identifying plants, bacteria and fungi

The regional origin of a food product commonly affects its value. To this, DNA-based identification of tissue remains could offer fine resolution. For honey, this would allow the usage of not only pollen but all plant tissue, and also that of microbes in the product, for discerning the origin. Here we examined how plant, bacterial and fungal taxa identified by DNA metabarcoding and metagenomics differentiate between honey samples from three neighbouring countries. To establish how the taxonomic contents of honey reflect the country of origin, we used joint species distribution modelling. GAPPCO: An Easy to Configure Geometric Algebra Coprocessor Based on GAPP Programs

Because of the high numeric complexity of Geometric Algebra, its use in engineering applications relies heavily on tools and devices for efficient implementations. In this article, we present a novel hardware design for a Geometric Algebra coprocessor, called GAPPCO, which is based on Geometric Algebra Parallelism Programs (GAPP). GAPPCO is a design for a coprocessor combining the advantages of optimizing software with a configurable hardware able to implement arbitrary Geometric Algebra algorithms. The idea is to have a fixed hardware easily and fast to be configured for different algorithms. We describe the new hardware design together with the complete tool chain for its configuration.

Rare Crystal Structure of Open Spirolactam Ring along with the Closed-Ring Form of a Rhodamine Derivative : Sensing of Cu2+ Ions from Spinach

Crystal structures of a rhodamine derivative in its closed and open spirolactam ring forms were developed, which allows selective and sensitive detection of Cu2+ ions at a micromolar range in neutral medium. The chemosensing properties of the probe through a pentacoordinate Cu2+ ions were proven by spectroscopic and theoretical analysis. The spirolactam ring opening as the Cu2+selective sensor was applied to spinach (Spinacia oleracea) to estimate the accumulation of copper as copper(II) in the plant. peerReviewed
Conformationally Locked Pyramidality Explains the Diastereoselectivity in the Methylation of trans-Fused Butyrolactones

A stereoselectivity model inspired by the total synthesis of stemona alkaloids is developed to explain why enolate-derived 3,4-fused butyrolactones are methylated with a preference for syn alkylation. The model shows how conformational locking present in nonplanar enolate structures favors syn over anti methylation, due to less significant structural distortions in the syn pathway. The developed model was also successfully used to rationalize selectivities of previously documented methylation reactions. peerReviewed
