Insights into the particle acceleration of a peculiar gamma -ray radio galaxy IC 310

IC 310 has recently been identified as a gamma-ray emitter based on observations at GeV energies with Fermi-LAT and at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) with the MAGIC telescopes. Despite IC 310 having been classified as a radio galaxy with the jet observed at an angle > 10 degrees, it exhibits a mixture of multiwavelength properties of a radio galaxy and a blazar, possibly making it a transitional object. On the night of 12/13th of November 2012 the MAGIC telescopes observed a series of violent outbursts from the direction of IC 310 with flux-doubling time scales faster than 5 min and a peculiar spectrum spreading over 2 orders of magnitude. The aftermath of an exceptional tev flare in the agn jet of ic 310

The nearby active galaxy IC 310 (z=0.019), located in the Perseus cluster of galaxies is a bright and variable multi-wavelength emitter from the radio regime up to very high gamma-ray energies above 100 GeV. Very recently, a blazar-like compact radio jet has been found by parsec-scale VLBI imaging. Along with the unusually flat gamma-ray spectrum and variable high-energy emission, this suggests that IC 310 is the closest known blazar and therefore a key object for AGN research. mm-VLBI observations of the active galaxy 3C 111 in outburst

The broad-line radio galaxy 3C 111 exhibited a major flux density outburst in 2007. Here, we present imaging and preliminary kinematic results of the jet, based on three millimetre-VLBI observations (86 GHz) using the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) covering one year just after the radio flare. The GMVA data allow us to study this outburst with unprecedented image fidelity at highest (sub-parsec) resolution. On these scales, the outburst is resolved into a complex series of plasma components forming an intriguing bent structure. 3D modeling from the onset of the SN to the full-fledged SNR: Role of an initial ejecta anisotropy on matter mixing

The aim of this work is to bridge the gap between CC SNe and their remnants by investigating how post-explosion anisotropies in the ejecta influence the structure and chemical properties of the remnant at later times. We performed three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical simulations starting soon after the SN event and following the evolution of the system in the circumstellar medium (consisting of the wind of the stellar progenitor), for 5000 years, obtaining the physical scenario of a SNR. Coupling hydrodynamics and radiation calculations for star-jet interactions in AGN

Stars and their winds can contribute to the non-thermal (NT) emission in extragalactic jets. Given the complexity of jet-star interactions, the properties of the resulting emission are strongly linked to those of the emitting flows. We simulate the interaction between a stellar wind and a relativistic extragalactic jet and use the hydrodynamic results to compute the NT emission under different conditions. We perform relativistic axisymmetric hydrodynamical simulations of a relativistic jet interacting with a supersonic, non-relativistic stellar wind. The TANAMI Program

2010

The TANAMI (Tracking AGN with Austral Milliarcsecond Interferometry) program provides comprehensive VLBI monitoring of extragalactic gamma-ray sources south of declination -30 degrees. Operating at two radio frequencies (8 and 22 GHz), this program is a critical component of the joint quasi-simultaneous observations with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and ground based observatories to discriminate between competing theoretical blazar emission models. We describe the TANAMI program and present early results on the 75 sources currently being monitored.

Afterglow Model for the Radio Emission from the Jetted Tidal Disruption Candidate Swift J1644+57

The recent transient event Swift J1644+57 has been interpreted as emission from a collimated relativistic jet, powered by the sudden onset of accretion onto a supermassive black hole following the tidal disruption of a star. Here we model the radio-microwave emission as synchrotron radiation produced by the shock interaction between the jet and the gaseous circumnuclear medium (CNM). At early times after the onset of the jet (t < 5-10 days) a reverse shock propagates through and decelerates the ejecta, while at later times the outflow approaches the Blandford-McKee self-similar evolution (possibly modified by additional late energy injection). The TANAMI Program: Southern-Hemisphere AGN on (Sub-)parsec Scales

The Southern Hemisphere VLBI monitoring program TANAMI provides dual-frequency (8 GHz and 22 GHz), milliarcsecond monitoring of extragalactic jets south of -30 degrees declination. The TANAMI sample consists of a combined radio and gamma-ray selected subsample of currently 80 AGN jets, with new gamma-ray bright sources being added upon detections by Fermi/LAT. Supporting programs provide simultaneous multiwavelength coverage of all sources, in order to construct broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of flaring and quiescence source states, as well as a rapid follow-up of high-energy flares. High-resolution monitoring of parsec-scale jets in the Fermi era

I review here the present observational efforts to study parsec-scale radio jets in active galactic nuclei with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) as related to the new window to the Universe opened by the LAT instrument on-board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. I describe the goals and achievements of those radio studies, which aim to probe the emission properties, morphological changes and related kinematics, magnetic fields from the linear and circular polarization, etc., and I put those in the context of the radio--gamma-ray connection. VLBI studies of TANAMI radio galaxies

Radio galaxies are relatively faint at $\gamma$-ray energies, where they make up only 1-2% of all AGN detected by Fermi-LAT. However, they offer a unique perspective to study the intrinsic properties of AGN jets. For this reason, the combination of $\gamma$-ray and multi-wavelength data with high-resolution VLBI monitoring is a powerful tool to tackle the basic unanswered questions about AGN jets. Here we present preliminary results from a sample study of radio galaxies in the Southern hemisphere observed by the TANAMI VLBI monitoring program.
