Plasma Aldosterone and Its Relationships With Left Ventricular Mass in Essential Hypertensive Patients With the Metabolic Syndrome

2008

BACKGROUND: The association of aldosterone with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) has not been fully elucidated. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationships of plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) with MetS and left ventricular mass (LVM) in nondiabetic Caucasian patients with essential hypertension. METHODS: Measurements were taken with the patients off antihypertensive medications. The measurements included 24-h blood pressure (BP) readings, plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone, and an echocardiogram. RESULTS: Subjects with MetS (n = 201) had higher age-adjusted PAC (10.2 +/- 5.8 vs. 11.6 +/- 5.9 ng/dl; P = 0.01) and greater age-adjusted LVM indexed for height2.7 (LVMH2.7)…

Note sull'embriologia nella tarda antichità e la prima età bizantina

2019

This paper deals with the outcomes of Galenism in Greek Late Antiquity and in the first period of the Byzantine era, considering particularly the rare but significant elements of novelty which are present in the rereading of the ancient tradition by John of Alexandria, in the Alexandrian Summaries of the Galenic Canon, and by Stephanus and Theophilus Protospatharius.

Relationship between particle size and dissolution rate of bulk powders and sieving characterized fractions of two qualities of orthoboric acid

1996

Drug Dev. Ind. Pharm. ISI Document Delivery No.: VN279 Times Cited: 1 Cited Reference Count: 22 Tromelin, A Habillon, S Andres, C Pourcelot, Y Chaillot, B; International audience; We have carried out a study of the particle size distribution and aqueous dissolution rate of two commercially available qualities of orthoboric acid, labeled ''crystal'' (ABC) and ''powder'' (ABP). In a previous work, we have shown that the two commercial qualities of orthoboric acid chosen as model compound (''powder'' and ''crystal'') are related to the same crystal network in spite of their different names. However, these two qualities have very different size particle distributions, as previously determined b…

Surface and Electronic Features of Fluorinated TiO 2 and Their Influence on the Photocatalytic Degradation of 1-Methylnaphthalene

2020

International audience; Surface fluorination improves the photocatalytic activity of TiO2, and the influences of various features of fluorinated TiO2 (TiO2–F) have often been discussed in the literature. The present paper addresses the changes induced by surface fluorination on the morphological, structural, surface, and electronic features of TiO2. In particular, X-ray diffraction, specific surface area analysis, and transmission and scanning electron microscopy give evidence that surface fluorination does not affect the structural properties and the morphology of TiO2 nanoparticles. In contrast, fluorination induces changes of surface and electronic properties. Chemical and thermogravimet…

Le motif du médecin tyran de Platon à Galien

2014

At various points in Method of medicine and in a passage in the Commentary on the Hippocratic Epidemics Galen takes up the image of the tyrant doctor employed by Plato in the famous passage in the Laws in which, to illustrate the role of the proem to the law, he introduces the contrast between doctors of freemen and doctors of slaves (Leg. IV 719e 8-720e 5) : this is an unexplored chapter of Galen’s Platonism.

Microcephaly and macrocephaly. A study on anthropometric and clinical data from 308 subjects

2019

Head circumference is the auxological parameter that most correlates with developmental anomalies in childhood. Head circumference (HC) two standard deviations (SD) below or above the mean defines microcephaly and macrocephaly, respectively. The aim of this retrospective study was to explore anthropometric parameters and clinical characteristics among subjects with abnormalities in HC who had been referred for developmental assessment. One hundred and sixty four subjects with microcephaly and 144 subjects with macrocephaly were enrolled from birth to 18 months of age. Head circumference at birth and the association with variables related to maternal health status, gestational age, growth pa…

The uncertainty of medicine: Galen on the notion of techne stochastike

2016

In this article we try to show the Galen’s perspective on the epistemological status of medicine, in particular starting from the conceptual category of τέχνη στοχαστική. Even though the qualification of τέχνη στοχαστική attributed to medicine does not have an explicitly negative connotation in Galen’s Corpus, it does occupy a subordinate position compared with the solidity furnished by the more geometrico method, and is almost a necessary evil that Galen introduces to justify that fallibility of medicine, which at the same time he himself tries in every way to minimize.

Un commento antico e una congettura umanistica: Galeno e lo ‘splendore’ di Andromaco il Vecchio

2016

In the antidote Galēnē by Andromachus the Elder (14.32.113-42.8 K) ) we nd (14.40.5) the noun ἀγλαΐην, «brightness», that causes some exegetical problems. Galen, however, commenting on the Galēnē in the rst book of his de antidotis, conms this term and re- commends that it should not be considered as an ingredient of the antidote. In a late ma- nuscript, the Parisinus gr. 2164, the term ἀγλαΐην is corrected into the adjective αἰγλῆεν, that could refer to the white pepper. Here I suggest that this conjecture should be consi- dered for a critical restitution of Andromachus’ text, in spite of Galen’s authority
