Lead isotopes of the carbonate-hosted Kabwe, Tsumeb, and Kipushi Pb-Zn-CU sulphide deposits in relation to Pan African orogenesis in the Damaran-Lufi…

1999

Lead isotope ratios of galena from the carbonate-hosted massive sulphide deposits of Kabwe (Pb-Zn) and Tsumeb (Pb-Zn-Cu) in Zambia and Namibia, respectively, have been measured and found to be homogeneous and characteristic of upper crustal source rocks. Kabwe galena has average isotope ratios of 206/204Pb = 17.997 ± 0.007, 207/204Pb = 15.713 ± 0.010 and 208/204Pb = 38.410 ± 0.033. Tsumeb galena has slightly higher 206/204Pb (18.112 ± 0.035) and slightly lower 207/204Pb (15.674 ± 0.016) and 208/204Pb (38.276 ± 0.073) ratios than Kabwe galena. The isotopic differences are attributed to local differences in the age and composition of the respective source rocks for Kabwe and Tsumeb. The homog…

Immobilization of single-stranded DNA fragments to solid surfaces and their repeatable specific hybridization : covalent binding or adsorption ?

2004

Abstract The different steps of the immobilization process of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) on surfaces by means of chemical grafting have been investigated using systematic measurements of grafting and hybridization densities by means of radioactive labelling. The immobilization by chemical grafting to a dense monomolecular layer of N-hydroxysuccinimidyl ester reactive functions attached to silica plates was performed from a dilute solution of amino-terminated oligonucleotides (10 μmol/l). The slow evaporation of the solvent allowed to increase the DNA grafting density by a factor of 10. A precise control of the rinsing process that followed the immobilization reaction allowed the discrimina…

Ancient Medicine in the Galenic Corpus: The Story of a Concealment

2021

The paper proposes, starting from some certain or probable allusions (in part. a passage in Galen's Commentary on 'Epidemics' 2, only extant in Arabic translation), but also from some striking omissions ('Ancient medicine' is not mentioned in the history of hygiene that Galen traces out in the central chapters of Thrasybulus), to reconstruct the history of this significant ‘concealment’. This will also be done in the light of the numerous passages in the corpus in which Galen advocates, constantly linking it to Hippocrates, the ideal of medicine that is ‘physiologica’.

Sulfide ore facies, fluid inclusion and sulfur isotope characteristics of the Tappehsorkh Zn-Pb ( ± Ag-Ba) deposit, South Esfahan, Iran

2020

International audience; The stratiform, stratabound Tappehsorkh Zn-Pb (± Ag-Ba) deposit, located in the southeastern part of the Malayer-Esfahan Metallogenic Belt of Iran, formed during Lower Cretaceous back-arc extension. Sulfide mi-neralization occurs within dolostone, black siltstone, and crystal lithic tuff and andesite associated with the Gushfil-Baghabrisham synsedimentary normal fault. Three sulfide ore facies (massive, bedded, and stockwork) occur in the deposit. Sulfide minerals are sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite and pyrite with minor chalcopyrite and bornite, and gangue minerals are barite, dolomite and quartz. Sulfide mineralization textures are massive, replacement , vein-vein…

Il dibattito sul solecismo nel II secolo D.C. La testimonianza di Galeno.

2017

The article reconstructs Galen’s position on the phenomenon of solecism, by examining the occurrences of σολοικίζω and terms related to it in the Galenic corpus. Solecism was debated in the II century A.D. as part of the more general ‘language issue’. Against the Atticistic trends that were very widespread at that time, Galen appears to be relatively tolerant of solecisms which does not imply a distortion of medical knowledge. Yet, his attitude is very different as regards linguistic errors due to a mistaken view of physical and medical theories.

Obbedienza e persuasione. Due modelli della relazione medico-paziente nella Grecia antica

2015

Through the analysis of texts written between the 4th century BC and the 2nd century AD, the article reconstructs the emergence in ancient Greece of two opposing paradigms of the doctor-patient relationship, one based on dialogue and persuasion (peithó), and the other on the imposition of authority. In particular, the latter model proves to be amply suited to illustrating, in various Greek literature texts – and first of all the political dialogues of Plato –, the relationship between those who hold political power and those subjected to it. Taking into account a famous passage in the Laws, which in a very effective diptych contrasts the doctor of the free and the doctor of slaves (IV 720a-…

De novo CCND2 mutations leading to stabilization of cyclin D2 cause megalencephaly-polymicrogyria-polydactyly-hydrocephalus syndrome

2014

Activating mutations in genes encoding phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-AKT pathway components cause megalencephaly-polymicrogyria-polydactyly-hydrocephalus syndrome (MPPH, OMIM 603387)(1-3). Here we report that individuals with MPPH lacking upstream PI3K-AKT pathway mutations carry de novo mutations in CCND2 (encoding cyclin D2) that are clustered around a residue that can be phosphorylated by glycogen synthase kinase 313 (GSK-3 beta)(4). Mutant CCND2 was resistant to proteasomal degradation in vitro compared to wild-type CCND2. The PI3K-AKT pathway modulates GSK-3 beta activity(4), and cells from individuals with PIK3CA, PIK3R2 or AKT3 mutations showed similar CCND2 accumulation. CCND…
