Influence of age on osteoarthritis progression after anterior cruciate ligament transection in rats.

2013

Abstract The anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) model of osteoarthritis (OA) in young rats is widely used to study the pathogenesis of OA and possible treatment approaches. As aging is a key factor in the progression of this condition, it is hypothesized that animals may vary in their responses to ACLT according to their age. The histopathological features of young (2 month-old) and middle-aged (12 month-old) rats in the presence or absence of ACLT were compared. The results indicated that moderate degradative changes can be detected in the knee joints of sham-operated middle-aged rats compared with young animals. After ACLT, cartilage degradation was significantly higher in midd…

Regulation of the inflammatory response by tin protoporphyrin IX in the rat anterior cruciate ligament transection model of osteoarthritis

2010

The purpose of this study was to investigate several inflammatory mediators and cartilage degradation molecules as possible biomarkers of joint lesion in the anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) model of osteoarthritis in rats. We also assessed whether the treatment with the anti-inflammatory agent tin protoporphyrin IX (SnPP) reduces the progression of disease. Our results indicate that serum levels of interleukin (IL)-6 and PGE2 are significantly increased in ACLT rats 10 weeks after surgery, whereas the increases in IL-1β and tumor necrosis-α were not significant. In addition, our data suggest that IL-17 is the main pro-inflammatory cytokine in the ACLT joint. We have shown that…

(H, ρ)-induced dynamics and the quantum game of life

2017

Abstract We propose an extended version of quantum dynamics for a certain system S , whose evolution is ruled by a Hamiltonian H, its initial conditions, and a suitable set ρ of rules, acting repeatedly on S . The resulting dynamics is not necessarily periodic or quasi-periodic, as one could imagine for conservative systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom. In fact, it may have quite different behaviors depending on the explicit forms of H, ρ as well as on the initial conditions. After a general discussion on this (H, ρ)-induced dynamics, we apply our general ideas to extend the classical game of life, and we analyze several aspects of this extension.

Gaming as a Key Approach for the Recovery Process of a Public Space: The Case Study of the Old Chemical Plant ‘Chimica Arenella’ in Palermo

2021

This poster describes the FORGE (FactOry of uRban GamEs) project, a proposal that our research group launched in partnership with the Municipality of Palermo (Italy) and other local stakeholders in 2019. FORGE will be hosted in what was previously a chemical plant (the former 'Chimica Arenella') and is an open factory designed to collect needs and to generate interventions for urban innovation. The four key terms we have used for the project are urban, game, factory and participation. In fact, FORGE employs a participatory methodological model based on the concept of game, aimed at supporting social and economic development through a platform for participatory co-design. FORGE plays also a …

Lipid accumulation and metabolism in polychaete spermatogenesis: Role of the large discoidal lipoprotein

2010

In most oviparous animals, lipoprotein-mediated lipid transport plays an important role in the nutrient supply for the oocyte. In male gametes, lipids are used as energy substrates in spermatozoa but nothing is yet known about their origin and metabolism throughout spermatogenesis. The lipid profiles analyzed from different stages of male germ cell development in the marine annelid Nereis virens were found to undergo a dramatic change from primary triacylglycerides at the beginning of germ cell development to cholesterol and phospholipids at the end of development as demonstrated by HPLC with evaporative light scattering detection and mass spectrometry. The uptake of a large discoidal lipop…

Solutions of nonlinear PDEs in the sense of averages

2012

Abstract We characterize p-harmonic functions including p = 1 and p = ∞ by using mean value properties extending classical results of Privaloff from the linear case p = 2 to all pʼs. We describe a class of random tug-of-war games whose value functions approach p-harmonic functions as the step goes to zero for the full range 1 p ∞ .

FROM DISCRETE KINETIC AND STOCHASTIC GAME THEORY TO MODELLING COMPLEX SYSTEMS IN APPLIED SCIENCES

2004

This paper deals with some methodological aspects related to the discretization of a class of integro-differential equations modelling the evolution of the probability distribution over the microscopic state of a large system of interacting individuals. The microscopic state includes both mechanical and socio-biological variables. The discretization of the microscopic state generates a class of dynamical systems defining the evolution of the densities of the discretized state. In general, this yields a system of partial differential equations replacing the continuous integro-differential equation. As an example, a specific application is discussed, which refers to modelling in the field of…
