The absence of breast development and the prevention of osteoporosis in Ullrich-Turner syndrome (UTS) require oestrogen/gestagen substitution therapy. In 8 out of 35 (23%) patients with UTS treated with conjugated equine oestrogens and cyclically with norethisterone acetate, the serum liver enzymes increased to conspicuous levels (AST 35; 20-73 U/l, ALT 92; 37-141 U/l, GGT 77; 25-227 U/l, [median; min-max]). These findings were compared with those in 41 tall girls who received a six-fold larger dose of conjugated equine oestrogens for the reduction of final height. The gradual loss of the human indigenous microbiota has been held responsible for this trend. The bacterial pathogen Helicobacter pylori is a constituent of the normal gastric microbiota whose presence has been inversely linked to allergy and asthma in humans and experimental models. The localization of membrane-bound gamma-glutamyltransferase with monoclonal antibody (mAb) 138H11 proved to be of value for differential diagnosis of renal cancer, since it correlated with the histogenetic profile of human epithelial renal tumors. Immunoreactive gamma-glutamyltransferase was located in the proximal tubule in all normal human kidneys (15/15) examined thus far by both ultrastructural and immunohistochemical techniques. From 68 epithelial renal cancers tested 31/31 clear-cell carcinomas and 15/16 chromophilic carcinomas expressed the target epitope of mAb 138H11. Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against the native form of rat kidney gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) were isolated by screening hybridomas with rat kidney brush-border membrane vesicles. They were directed against protein rather than sugar epitopes in that each recognized all GGT isoforms. All of them inhibited partially the enzyme activity of GGT.
