Synthesis and characterization of a novel high luminescent gold-2-mercapto-1-methyl-imidazole complex
2010
Synthesis and characterization of a new gold-2-mercapto-1-methyl imidazole are reported. This new organic material shows an extraordinary fluorescence activity (superfluorescence) up to 220°C with an unusual quantum yield of 0.2. Both fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy were applied to understand the behavior of the gold-2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole complex. Results suggest that the superfluorescence activity can be attributed to the shrinking of the HOMO-LUMO band gap energy following complexation of the organic imidazole system with gold. Landscape Ecological Structure in the Eastern Part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia
2008
Landscape Ecological Structure in the Eastern Part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia Latvia is a country where the forest area has increased and habitat fragmentation has reversed compared with many other European countries. In order to examine the effect of this expansion on biodiversity, vegetation maps dating from 2002 and the years 1930-1936 were used for comparative landscape structure analyses while archive materials from forest plans, and data from the national forest management database were used for land use analysis. Four landscape ecoregions in the eastern side of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve were selected for analysis. Landscape structure indicators derived f…
A synthesis of multi-taxa management experiments to guide forest biodiversity conservation in Europe
2023
Most European forests are used for timber production. Given the limited extent of unmanaged (and especially primary) forests, it is essential to include commercial forests in the conservation of forest biodiversity. In order to develop ecologically sustainable forest management practices, it is important to understand the management impacts on forest-dwelling organisms. Experiments allow testing the effects of alternative management strategies, and monitoring of multiple taxa informs us on the response range across forest-dwelling organisms. To provide a representative picture of the currently available information, metadata on 28 multi-taxa forest management experiments were collected from…

Recensione del volume “Lidia e altre. Pari opportunità ieri e oggi: l’eredità di Lidia Poët”, di Chiara Viale, Milano 2022
2022
The story of Lidia Poet, the first woman registered in the Register of Lawyers in Italy is linked to the events of the promotion of gender equality sanctioned by Art. 51th of the Italian Constitution. It testifies to the long path towards equal opportunities.

On a small island, someone is patiently looking at the ocean, waiting for the shearwaters to come back to their nests, the hair blown by a gentle breeze, a laptop full of notes open on the legs. On the other side of the globe, perched on a high ladder, a scientist is checking a Pygmy Owl nest box. A cautious song breaks the stillness of the morning: spring is coming and soon the taiga will be alive with breeding activities. In a small lab, under a buzzing lamp, a young researcher is hunched over a pile of ancient bird bones. Each one echoes past stories of changing climate, warning us about the future. A lonely figure stands against a hazy sky, meditating on the battles won and those still …
Distribution and Function of Gap Junction Coupling in Cortical GABAergic Neurons.
2013
Although gap junctions have been observed in GABAergic interneurons of several brain regions, this chapter focuses on the distribution and functions of gap junctions and connexins in inhibitory interneurons of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Evidence for interconnections mediated by electrical synapses is reported for at least eight cerebral cortex interneuron types, classified on the basis of morphology, electrophysiology and molecular markers. The main differences in the organization of these interneuronal networks are summarized in terms of homologous and heterologous electrical coupling and mutual chemical inhibition. The role of connexin36 (Cx36) in forming neuronal electrical syn…
