Opale: Photonische Kristalle

2007

Dies erklart u.a. den brillianten Farbeindruck.

DFT study of a singleF center in cubic SrTiO3 perovskite

2006

Various properties of a cubic phase of SrTiO3 perovskite containing single F centers (neutral oxygen vacancies), including energies of their formation and migration, were simulated using different formalisms of density functional theory (DFT) as implemented into CRYSTAL-2003 and VASP computer codes. The lattice relaxation around the F center was found to be sensitive to both shape and size of supercells used. The larger the supercell, the closer the defect energy level in the bandgap lies to the conduction band bottom. It approaches the optical ionization energy of 0.49 eV for 270- and 320-atom supercells, where the distance between neighboring defects increases up to four lattice constants…

Synthesis, crystal structure, optical, thermal and magnetic studies of a new organic-inorganic hybrid based on tetrachloroferrate (III)

2021

Abstract A new organic metal halide hybrid, benzyltrimethylammonium tetrachloroferrate (III), 1, ((BzMe3N)FeCl4) was synthesized by slow evaporation. The single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1, crystallizes in the P-1 triclinic space group with the parameters a = 7.158 (5), b = 8.814 (8), c = 12.922 (4) A, α = 82.44 (5), β = 86.14 (4), γ = 87.13 (7)°, V = 805.7 (10) A3 and Z = 2. The structure packing exhibits a cationic and anionic layers alternation linked by means of C─H⋯Cl hydrogen interactions. The Hirshfeld surface and the lattice energy of 1 were calculated. The material purity was verified using X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld refinements. The TG-DTA a…

Solid rotor induction machines for use in electrically-assisted turbochargers

2006

The stator leakage reactance has a major influence on the performance of a solid rotor induction machine. It is larger and it is more difficult to define and calculate than in a cage-rotor machine. When the higher leakage reactance is taken into account, the equivalent circuit model gives predictions of sufficient precision for design purposes. The airgap, normally chosen to be quite small, is preferably quite large by general standards. The torque varies as (V/f) 3 which makes it difficult to provide a wide range of constant power operation in a variable speed application. Slitting the rotor helps to improve the characteristic for variable-speed duties.

Air gap fringing flux reduction in a high frequency inductor for a solar inverter

2013

In a gapped inductor, air gap fringing flux induces eddy currents in conductors in the vicinity of the air gap producing unwanted power loss and heat in the coil. This paper presents a detailed analysis to evaluate the performance changes of a high frequency inductor used in a solar inverter by new arrangement scheme of the air gap locations. The effect of air gap positioning in the core and the ac-resistance and leakage inductance of the high frequency inductor used in a solar inverter is investigated by using the 2-D finite element analysis. The simulation results show that a significant improvement can be achieved with limited changes in the air gap locations.

Bank-specific shocks and aggregate leverage: Empirical evidence from a panel of developed countries

2020

International audience; This paper investigates the link between shocks in the banking sector and aggregate leverage measured by the credit-to-GDP gap. Using a balanced panel of 15 countries for the period 1989–2016, we exploit the approach due to Gabaix (2011) and consider banking granular shocks as an indicator of banking distress. Using methods that account for potential endogeneity, we find that banking shocks Granger-cause aggregate leverage. In particular, banking shocks tend to increase the level of leverage and cause departures of the credit-to-GDP ratio from its long-term trend.

Robust, Highly Luminescent Au13 Superatoms Protected by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

2019

Gold superatom nanoclusters stabilized entirely by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and halides are reported. The reduction of well-defined NHC–Au–Cl complexes produces clusters comprised of an icosahedral Au13 core surrounded by a symmetrical arrangement of nine NHCs and three chlorides. X-ray crystallography shows that the clusters are characterized by multiple CH−π and π–π interactions, which rigidify the ligand and likely contribute to the exceptionally high photoluminescent quantum yields observed, up to 16.0%, which is significantly greater than that of the most luminescent ligand-protected Au13 superatom cluster. Density functional theory analysis suggests that clusters are 8-electron …

Light harvesting with Ge quantum dots embedded in SiO2 and Si3N4

2014

Cataloged from PDF version of article. Germanium quantum dots (QDs) embedded in SiO2 or in Si3N4 have been studied for light harvesting purposes. SiGeO or SiGeN thin films, produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, have been annealed up to 850 degrees C to induce Ge QD precipitation in Si based matrices. By varying the Ge content, the QD diameter can be tuned in the 3-9 nm range in the SiO2 matrix, or in the 1-2 nm range in the Si3N4 matrix, as measured by transmission electron microscopy. Thus, Si3N4 matrix hosts Ge QDs at higher density and more closely spaced than SiO2 matrix. Raman spectroscopy revealed a higher threshold for amorphous-to-crystalline transition for Ge QDs e…

Pragmatic aspects of the translation of slang and four‐letter words

1994

Abstract The article discusses linguistic and societal attitudes to slang in Latvia and their relevance to its rendition in Latvian translations. For historical reasons, there is a wide gap between spoken and written colloquial layers in Latvian. Slang, and especially four‐letter words, function differently in Latvian compared to English, where they are used much more frequently and have lost their disturbing connotations. Accordingly, in Latvian translations they must be softened to achieve ‘similar effect’. Today, however, there is a clear‐cut tendency to liberalize the attitude towards slang and taboos, which can be explained by the recent radical changes in Latvian society. Direct trans…
