Epistemic Search Sequences in Peer Interaction in a Content-based Language Classroom

2013

Epistemics in interaction refers to how participants display, manage, and orient to their own and others’ states of knowledge. This article applies recent conversation analytical work on epistemics to classrooms where language and content instruction are combined. It focuses on Epistemic Search Sequences (ESSs) through which students in peer interaction collectively resolve emerging knowledge gaps while working on pedagogic tasks. ESSs are initiated when a speaker displays an ‘unknowing’ epistemic stance by making an information request about some aspect of language or the content being worked on. We examine three different types of ESS: those in which a ‘knowing’ response is accepted by th…

Absence of long-term effects of reproduction on longevity in the mouse model.

2014

Background Most human demographic data, particularly those on natural fertility populations, find no relationship or even a positive association between fertility and longevity. The present study aims to ascertain whether there is a trade-off between fertility and longevity in the mouse model. Methods The study was focused on the first litter produced by 10- to 14-wk-old hybrid (C57BL/6JIco female X CBA/JIco male) mice. A single female/male per litter was individually housed with a male/female at the age of 25 and 52 wk, respectively, until the end of reproductive life in females or natural death in males under controlled housing conditions. Post-reproductive females and virgin mice were re…

The global, regional, and national burden of cirrhosis by cause in 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017 : a systematic analysis for the Global Bu…

2020

Background\ud \ud Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases (collectively referred to as cirrhosis in this paper) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, although the burden and underlying causes differ across locations and demographic groups. We report on results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 on the burden of cirrhosis and its trends since 1990, by cause, sex, and age, for 195 countries and territories.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud We used data from vital registrations, vital registration samples, and verbal autopsies to estimate mortality. We modelled prevalence of total, compensated, and decompensated cirrhosis on the bas…

Inverted energy gap law for the nonradiative decay in fluorescent floppy molecules: larger fluorescence quantum yields for smaller energy gaps

2019

A data survey on experimental fluorescence quantum yields of (multi)substituted dicyano-distyrylbenzenes in fluid solution evidences that non-radiative decay increases with the Franck-Condon energy (E-FC), being opposite to the conventional energy gap law. Quantum-chemistry indicates that this is controlled by access to the conical intersection (CI) following the Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle as a first-step approximation for this family of molecules; the variations in E-FC among the different compounds are found to be decisive, while those of E-CI are estimated to be weaker or even enhancing the effect. The current findings may have significant consequences for the design of molecules for o…

Mean-field theory for superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene

2018

Recent experiments show how a bilayer graphene twisted around a certain magic angle becomes superconducting as it is doped into a region with approximate flat bands. We investigate the mean-field $s$-wave superconducting state in such a system and show how the state evolves as the twist angle is tuned, and as a function of the doping level. We argue that part of the experimental findings could well be understood to result from an attractive electron--electron interaction mediated by electron--phonon coupling, but the flat-band nature of the excitation spectrum makes also superconductivity quite unusual. For example, as the flat-band states are highly localized around certain spots in the st…

Photoinduced magnetization wave in diluted magnetic semiconductors

2006

We derive an evolutional equation incorporating the processes of spin-polarization transfer from an electron to a magnetic ion subsystem of a diluted magnetic semiconductor along with spin-lattice relaxation and spatial spin diffusion. Above equation has been obtained for nonequilibrium magnetization due to exchange scattering of photoexcited charge carriers by magnetic ions. We show that the mechanism of a band gap narrowing due to exchange scattering requires relatively low optical power to reach an optical bistability for pump frequency range close to crystal band gap. In a bulk crystal, only relatively small local area with essential magnetization enhancement can absorb optical power, t…

Hybrid functional study of structural, electronic and magnetic properties of S-doped ZnO with and without neutral vacancy

2013

Abstract The structural and electronic properties of S-doped ZnO are investigated by density functional theory (DFT) and empirical pseudopotential method (EPM). Using the Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional with an adjusted mixing coefficient α , we obtain a good agreement on lattice parameters and band gap energy with the available experimental data. We have also investigate the Zn-vacancy effects on the electronic and magnetic properties of S-doped ZnO. Our calculations demonstrate that S impurity prefers to be close to the cation vacancy in the apical position. The magnetic analysis with the HSE functional shows a triplet state character with a total magnetic moment of 1.81 μ…

Impact of local order and stoichiometry on the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of Heusler compounds

2015

Nowadays, a wealth of information on ultrafast magnetization dynamics of thin ferromagnetic films exists in the literature. Information is, however, scarce on bulk single crystals, which may be especially important for the case of multi-sublattice systems. In Heusler compounds, representing prominent examples for such multi-sublattice systems, off-stoichiometry and degree of order can significantly change the magnetic properties of thin films, while bulk single crystals may be generally produced with a much more well-defined stoichiometry and a higher degree of ordering. A careful characterization of the local structure of thin films versus bulk single crystals combined with ultrafast demag…

The Shaping of Flux Density at the Air Gap of Small DC Motors with Different Permanent-Magnet Poles

1995

Design, operation and reliability of permanent-magnet DC micromotors are highly dependent of the magnet employed, i.e. of its demagnetization curve, type of magnetization (either radial or tangential), size and position within the micromotor as well as of its shape.
