2006
At the end of the 1970s, after more than a decade of intense economic development, some marks of the mass consumption model were engraved in the Valencian society: a commercialisation system increasingly dominated by large corporations which trade in worldwide markets and use massive advertising; an animal-protein based diet, with products imported from far-away countries, with a strong presence of highly processed and packaged food and beverage; mobility based on cars; preference for owned housing, sub-urbanisation tendency, and growing energy use; «use-and-dump» culture defined by short life of products and high production of waste. This consumption model is highly homogenous and indicate…
Attitudes of Italian dental and dental hygiene students toward tobacco-use cessation
2010
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the smoking habits of Italian dental and dental hygiene students and to assess their knowledge on the health effects of cigarette smoking and their attitudes toward tobacco-use cessation (TUC) in dental practice. Materials and methods: Data was collected from 220 students attending the Dental and Dental Hygiene Schools (DS and DHS, respectively) at the University of Palermo (Italy). Results: The percentage of smokers amongst DS and DHS students was similar (32.78% vs. 32.5%) with 67.77% of DS students and 77.5% of DHS agreeing that the damages to health caused by smoking were covered in their didactic course work. A high percentage of DS (…
Restoring the political: The places of memory in Argentina, Chile and Colombia
2019
Places and politics of memory: theoretical and methodological notes from the argentine experience
2019
The aim of this paper is to study some substantive aspects into the relationship between memories, politics and places in the field of memory studies. The proposal that guides it is to advance in the construction of a theoretical and conceptual framework for the analysis of different strategies of spacialization of social memory related to actors and events of pasts of state violence and political repression, with focus on the argentine case. To this end, a bibliography of a different nature that has worked on the subject has been critically reviewed in order to distinguish the concepts and analytical dimensions that are relevant in the construction of research objects (material, symbolic, …
Carbocysteine regulates innate immune responses and senescence processes in cigarette smoke stimulated bronchial epithelial cells
2013
Cigarette smoke represents the major risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Cigarette smoke extracts (CSE) alter TLR4 expression and activation in bronchial epithelial cells. Carbocysteine, an anti-oxidant and mucolytic agent, is effective in reducing the severity and the rate of exacerbations in COPD patients. The effects of carbocysteine on TLR4 expression and on the TLR4 activation downstream events are largely unknown. This study was aimed to explore whether carbocysteine, in a human bronchial epithelial cell line (16-HBE), counteracted some pro-inflammatory CSE-mediated effects. In particular, TLR4 expression, LPS binding, p21 (a senescence marker), IL-8 mRNA and…
Development and Validation of a Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography Method for the Simultaneous Determination of Indole-3-Acetic Acid, Indole-3-Pyru…
2011
A simple, sensitive, precise, and specific reverse HPLC method was developed and validated for the determination of plant hormones in barley (Hordeum vulgareL.). The method includes extraction in aqueous organic solvent followed by solid-phase extraction, sample evaporation, and reversed-phase HPLC analysis in a general purpose UV-visible (abscisic acid (ABA)) and fluorescence detection (indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-pyruvic acid (IPA)), high-performance liquid chromatography system. The separation was carried out on Zorbax Eclipse XDB C8 column (150 × 4.6 mm I.D) with a mobile phase composed of methanol and 1% acetic acid (60 : 40 v/v) in isocratic mode at a flow rate of 1 ml min…
Mobilization of proline in the starchy endosperm of germinating barley grain.
1979
In germinating grains of barley, Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya, free proline accumulated in the starchy endosperm during the period of rapid mobilization of reserve proteins. When starchy endosperms were separated from germinating grains and homogenized in a dilute buffer of pH 5 (the pH of the starchy endosperm), the liberation of proline continued in these suspensions. The process was completely inhibited by diisopropylfluorophosphate, indicating that it was totally dependent on serine carboxy-peptidases. The carboxypeptidases present in the starchy endosperms of germinating grains were fractionated by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. Four peaks were obtained, all with different activi…
I traffici illeciti nel Mediterraneo. Persone, stupefacenti, tabacco. Report Germania
2019
Persone, stupefacenti, t…
Under Our Eye: Margaret Atwood's Variation on the Panopticon in "The Heart Goes Last"
2020
In her dystopian dark comedy The Heart Goes Last (2015), Margaret Atwood openly refers to Jeremy Bentham’s concept of the Panopticon. The future world depicted in her novel is filled with violence and deprived of both human bonds and hope. Hence, being contained, monitored and — after Foucault — disciplined and punished appears to be the characters’ last resort. Surveillance tempts both sexes as it is politically correct and universal, and it does not privilege one group of people over the other. The article discusses the dystopian vision of the near future as created by Atwood in her 2015 novel, with direct references to the conception of the Panopticon, both in its original meaning propos…
