The Stock Genetic Structure of Two Sparidae Species, Diplodus vulgaris and Lithognathus mormyrus, in the Mediterranean Sea.
2003
Abstract Polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of allozymes was used to investigate the intraspecies genetic variation and the genetic stock structure of Diplodus vulgaris and Lithognathus mormyrus captured from eight localities in the Mediterranean Sea. Twenty-two and 20 putative enzyme-coding loci were examined, respectively, in D. vulgaris and L. mormyrus . Polymorphic loci at the 95% level were used to assess the allozyme variability in D. vulgaris ( AAT-2 ∗ , EST-1 ∗ , GLDH ∗ , PEPB-2 ∗ , PGI-2 ∗ , PGM ∗ , SDH ∗ ) and L. mormyrus ( AAT-2 ∗ , EST-1 ∗ , GLDH ∗ , MDH-2 ∗ , PGI-2 ∗ , PGM ∗ ). The proportion of polymorphic loci in both species ranged from 0.31 ( D. vulgaris ) to 0.30 ( …
Development of “universal” gene-specific markers from Malus spp. cDNA sequences, their mapping and use in synteny studies within Rosaceae
2009
The Rosaceae contains many economically valuable crop genera, including Malus (apple), Fragaria (strawberry), and Prunus (stone fruit). There has been increasing interest in the development of linkage maps for these species, with a view to marker-assisted selection to assist breeding programs and, recently, in the development of transferable markers to permit syntenic comparisons of maps of different rosaceous genera. In this investigation, a set of Malus cDNA sequences were downloaded from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory database. The sequences were aligned with homologous full-length Arabidopsis genomic DNA sequences to identify putative intron–exon junctions and conserved flank…
Gene flow rates in Yugoslavian populations of the smooth newt Triturus vulgaris
1992
Allozymic variation in 22 loci in several Yugoslavian populations of four subspecies of the smooth newt Triturus vulgaris, has been analyzed. The frequency of private alleles and the coefficient of genetic differentiation, FST, give very different indirect estimates of the effective number of migrants per generation, Nm. However, such Nm estimates, in most cases higher than 1, imply that gene flow between populations is large enough as to prevent differentiation by random drift. In the case of T.v. vulgaris, of which sixteen populations amply distributed through Yugoslavia were sampled, there is evidence that frequent extinction and recolonization processes might be responsible for the obse…
Major gene effects during weed evolution: phenotypic characters cosegregate with alleles at the ray floret locus in Senecio vulgaris L. (Asteraceae)

Skoulekia meningialis n. gen., n. sp. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae Odhner, 1912) a parasite surrounding the brain of the Mediterranean common two-banded …
2010
This study describes a new aporocotylid genus and species, Skoulekia meningialis n. gen., n. sp. which was detected in the ectomeningeal veins surrounding the optic lobes of the brain of the common two-banded seabream Diplodus vulgaris (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817) from the Gulf of Valencia (Mediterranean Sea). A detailed morphological description of S. meningialis is provided, including drawings, measurements and scanning electron microscopy images as well as a phylogenetic study of S. meningialis and closely related taxa using DNA sequence data obtained from whole ITS2 and partial 18S and 28S rDNA regions. Morphology as well as molecular phylogeny strongly support the erection of a new g…
Three species of Magnibursatus Naidenova, 1969 (Digenea: Derogenidae) from Atlantic and Black Sea marine teleosts
2003
Three species of Magnibursatus Naidenova, 1969 are described from marine teleosts: M. skrjabini (Vlasenko, 1931), the type species of the genus, from the gobiid Zosterisessor ophiocephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast; M. bartolii sp. n. from the sparid Boops boops off the Atlantic coast of Spain; and M. minutus sp. n. from the gobiid Neogobius eurycephalus on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. M. bartolii differs from all other Magnibursatus species in its larger sinus-sac (length >250 µm, width >150 µm) and the more posterior location of testes. This species is also unusual in that it occurs in the branchial chamber and on the gills of its host. M. minutus is distinguished by the distinct…
Glochidial infection by the endangered Margaritifera margaritifera (Mollusca) increased survival of salmonid host (Pisces) during experimental Flavob…
2021
AbstractCo-infections are common in host-parasite interactions, but studies about their impact on the virulence of parasites/diseases are still scarce. The present study compared mortality induced by a fatal bacterial pathogen, Flavobacterium columnare between brown trout infected with glochidia from the endangered freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera, and uninfected control fish during the parasitic period and after the parasitic period (i.e. glochidia detached) in a laboratory experiment. We hypothesised that glochidial infection would increase host susceptibility to and/or pathogenicity of the bacterial infection. We found that the highly virulent strain of F. columnare c…
Garibaldi popolare. Politiche novecentesche dell’icona risorgimentale
2019
«Hero of the People». Political uses of Garibaldi’s image in the XXth century · Garibaldi epitomizes Italian Risorgimento also on an iconographical level. With particular reference to Sicily in the XXth century, the article aims at analyzing first some aspects of an often thaumaturgic Garibaldi’s figure within subaltern culture, chiefly through handcratfs, political tattoos, painted scenes pertaining to traditional puppet theatre as well as to ornate carts. All these contexts show a dense circulation between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture. The elections for the regional parliament in 1947 are characterized by the massive use of Garibaldi in the frame of Communist propaganda; we try to shed light …
Historical remarks, orginal description and last advances on Pleurotus nebrodensis
2013
Giuseppe Inzenga, the scientist who first described Pleurotus nebrodensis, was one of the major mycologists of the second half of the 19th century. This chapter describes the main biographical aspects of the life of Inzenga and its contribution to science with particular reference to mycology. The chapter also includes notes on the social and academic context of the mid-1800s, which led Inzenga to the original description of P. nebrodensis, the analysis of the critical aspects of nomenclature and the logical path that led us to the recent designation of a P. nebrodensis epitype. An updated description of the taxon and the discovery of the loci classici of P. nebrodensis collections is also …
