Improving understanding of logarithms by using the approach of repeated division

2016

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 Empirical evidence from research (Chua & Wood, 2005) and my own experience as a teacher point to the difficulties in teaching logarithms in schools. Students find logarithm related questions difficult. They see ‘log’ as a common factor in expression log𝑥+log𝑦 and write it as log(𝑥+𝑦). Students have difficulty in recognizing logarithm as a number (Berezovski & Zazkis, 2006). This research aims to develop an approach that enhances students’ performance, conceptual understanding and retention of logarithms. It is hoped that the approach could be used to reduce the problems faced by the students. In this research, I used a mixed…

Power-aware design of MCML logarithmic adders

2010

This paper describes the low-power design of a MOS current-mode logarithmic adder. The adder utilizes the Brent-Kung tree structure. The design strategy adopted is very simple and effective. Moreover, it can be utilized also for other types of logarithmic adders. To validate it, several adders were designed in a TSMC CMOS 130nm technology. Results of simulations indicate that the proposed methodology offers a good starting point before fine-tuning the design by SPICE simulations. Finally, the tradeoff that can be realized between performance and power consumption is discussed.

ASPETTI BIO-TAFONOMICI IN AMBIENTE CARSICO COME INDICATORI DEL RITO DEL MEGARIZEIN

2015

PAPA and FMF in two siblings: possible amplification of clinical presentation? A case report

2019

Abstract Background Familial Mediterranean Fever is a monogenic autoinflammatory disease, typically characterized by recurrent attacks of fever, serositis, aphthous of oral mucosa, erythema. “Pyogenic arthritis, pyoderma gangrenosum and acne syndrome” is a rare autoinflammatory disease with variable expression and typically involving joints and skin. Both the diseases are linked by the overproduction of IL-1. Case presentation We report on the case of two siblings affected by recurrent attacks of fever, oral aphthous stomatitis, abdominal pain, arthritis, undefined dermatitis at the hands, associated with increased AST, ALT, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum amyloid …

Perceived effectiveness, restrictiveness and compliance with containment measures against the Covid-19 pandemic: an international comparative study i…

2021

National governments took action to delay the transmission of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) by implementing different containment measures. We developed an online survey that included 44 different containment measures. We aimed to assess how effective citizens perceive these measures, which measures are perceived as violation of citizens’ personal freedoms, which opinions and demographic factors have an effect on compliance with the measures, and what governments can do to most effectively improve citizens’ compliance. The survey was disseminated in 11 countries: UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, India, Latvia, Poland, Romania, and Sweden. We acquired 9543 unique r…

Vector Transmission of a Plant-Pathogenic Bacterium in the Arsenophonus Clade Sharing Ecological Traits with Facultative Insect Endosymbionts

2009

Bressan, A., Semetey, O., Arneodo, J., Lherminier, J., and BoudonPadieu, E. 2009. Vector transmission of a plant-pathogenic bacterium in the Arsenophonus clade sharing ecological traits with facultative insect endosymbionts. Phytopathology 99:1289-1296. The planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus (Hemiptera: Cixiidae) is the major vector of a nonculturable plant-pathogenic γ-3 proteobacterium associated with a disease of sugar beet called syndrome “basses richesses” (SBR). The bacterium, here called SBR bacterium, belongs to the Arsenophonous clade, which includes mostly insect-associated facultative symbionts. Assays using field-collected planthopper nymphs and adults were carried out to inve…

Determinants of CAT (COPD Assessment Test) scores in a population of patients with COPD in central and Eastern Europe: The POPE study

2019

Abstract Background The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) has been proposed to help guide therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is important to understand the distribution of scores in different COPD populations and their determinants. Methods The POPE study is an international, observational cross-sectional study of COPD subjects in 11 Central and Eastern European countries aimed at characterizing COPD phenotypes. Here we report the analysis of CAT scores with the objective of identifying their determinants, evaluating symptom load and investigating the distribution of scores among the participating countries. Additionally, we investigated the discrepancies between the CAT a…

Popular uses of wild plant species for medicinal purposes in the Nebrodi Regional Park (North-Eastern Sicily, Italy)

2014

Ethnopharmacological relevance: The area of the Nebrodi Regional Park (North-Eastern Sicily, Italy) has Q3 been quantitatively investigated in an ethnobotanical study for the first time. A total of 90 wild species are used for medicinal purposes and the uses of 5 species have not previously been reported in ethnobotanical studies in Italy (e.g., the use of Arisarum vulgare O. Targ. Tozz. for the treatment of rheumatic pains, the use of Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke for the treatment of liver diseases). Aim of the study: The aim of this paper was to understand to what extent current knowledge on the medicinal use of plants is still an element of the culture within the rural populations of …
