Effects of the benzodiazepine receptor agonist midazolam and antagonist flumazenil on 5-hydroxytryptamine release from guinea-pig intestine in vitro

Isolated segments of the guinea-pig small intestine and the guinea-pig stomach were vascularly perfused and the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid into the portal venous effluent determined by high pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Test substances were applied intraarterially. The benzodiazepine receptor agonist, midazolam, concentration-dependently increased (by 58%, at 1 nmol/l) and decreased (by 32%, at 100 nmol/l) the release of 5-HT from small intestine preparations. Antiviral activity of aged green tea extract in model food systems and under gastric conditions.

Aged-green tea extract (GTE) is known to reduce the infectivity of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and murine norovirus (MNV), a human norovirus surrogate, in vitro and in washing solutions. Initially, the effect of aged-GTE was evaluated on virus like particles (VLPs) of human norovirus (HuNoV) genogroup I (GI) by a porcine gastric mucine (PGM)-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and on HuNoV GI suspensions by an in situ capture-RT-qPCR method, suggesting that HuNoVs are very sensitive to aged-GTE treatment at 37 °C. To test the effect of food intake on gastric emptying of gastric juice-resistant drugs, emptying time of a 11 x 6 mm tablet and a 20 x 7 mm capsule was measured by means of a metal detector in 10 healthy persons (5 men and 5 women; mean age 25 [18-30] years) after fasting and after eating three main and three in-between meals. After fasting the tablets left the stomach after 78 +/- 18 min, the capsules after 60 +/- 16 min, while meal intake delayed emptying by a factor of 10 to 12 +/- 1.3 hours and 10 +/- 1.8 hours, respectively. Abstract Enniatins (ENs) are bioactive compounds produced by the secondary metabolism of several Fusarium strains and known to have several biological activities, such as acting as enzyme inhibitors, antifungal and antibacterial agents, and immunomodulatory substances. Occurrence of Fusarium mycotoxins in Italian cereal and cereal products from organic farming.

In the present study, the occurrence of eighteen mycotoxins, nine trichothecenes (deoxynivalenol, 3-acetyl-deoxynivalenol, 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, neosolaniol, diacetoxyscirpenol, fusarenon-X, T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin), three zearalenones (zearalenone, α-zearalenol and β-zearalenol), and six emergent mycotoxins, beauvericin and five enniatins (A, A1, B, B1 and B4), was monitored in different Italian organic cereals and cereal products by using a liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry method. Gastric emptying in infants with gastroesophageal reflux Ultrasound evaluation before and after cisapride administration

The present study aimed to evaluate gastric emptying in children with gastroesophageal reflux (GER) by means of real-time ultrasonography, on the basis of measurements of the cross-sectional area of the gastric antrum. Twelve children with GER were studied (seven males, five females; age range, 3-13 months) and compared with 12 normal control children (six males, six females; age range, 3-13 months).
