Mortality rate and risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding in elderly patients
2019
Abstract Background Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) is burdened by high mortality rate that increases with aging. Elderly patients may be exposed to multiple risk factors for GIB. We aimed at defining the impact of GIB in elderly patients. Methods Since 2008, samples of elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years) with multimorbidity admitted to 101 internal medicine wards across Italy have been prospectively enrolled and followed-up (REPOSI registry). Diagnoses of GIB, length of stay (LOS), mortality rate, and possible risk factors, including drugs, index of comorbidity (Cumulative Illness Rating Scale [CIRS]), polypharmacy, and chronic diseases were assessed. Adjusted multivariate logistic regressio…
Overview on SNIFFPHONE:A portable device for disease diagnosis
2019
We present SNIFFPHONE, a handy and easy-To-use device that allows the non-invasive detection of gastric diseases. It analyzes the user's exhaled breath using specifically developed gas sensors. The device is coupled to a smartphone, which governs the breath analysis process, sends the data measurements to an external data analysis server, and finally gives feedback to the user. In this work, we describe the SNIFFPHONE device and the general platform under development.
Diel feeding habits of juveniles of Mullus surmuletus (Linneo, 1758) in the lagoon of the Stagnone di Marsala (Western Sicily, Italy)
1999
Diet composition, feeding rhythm, gastric evacuation rate and daily ration were investigated in juvenile Mulhis surmuletus (Linneo, 1758). Fish were collected in the lagoon of the Stagnone di Marsala in western Sicily, in July 1995, during a 24 h sampling period. Copepoda, Polychaeta, Amphipoda and Tanaidacea were shown to be the most frequent prey items. The feeding index values showed two different daily feeding times. A unimodal trend in the daily rhythm of food consumption was derived, with a peak in feeding between 1200 and 2000 h. Gastric evacuation in juvenile M. surmuletus is best described by an exponential model, with a gastric evacuation rate R = 0.66 g h-1 (r = 0.88) (T = 24.45 …
Gemcitabine plus Oxaliplatin Folinic Acid and 5-Fluorouracil in patients with advanced gastric cancer
2004
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: oxaliplatin in combination with folinic acid (FA) and infusional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) has shown significant anti-tumor activity in gastric cancer patients (FOLFOX). Previous studies have shown that gemcitabine (GEM), a new fluorinated anti-metabolite, enhances the individual anti-tumor activity of either 5-FU or oxaliplatin. We have therefore designed a multi-center phase II trial in order to test a novel GEM+FOLFOX-4 regimen in patients with metastatic gastric cancer. METHODS: we enrolled 36 patients, 28 males and 8 females, with an average age of 64.4 years (range 37-78), who received bi-weekly treatment with GEM (1,000 mg/m2 on day 1), levo-FA (100 mg/m2 on days 1 a…

Inguinal hernia: The destiny of the inferior epigastric vessels and the pathogenesis of the disease
2020
While many scientific reports deal with inguinal hernia, including treatment methods and prosthetic devices proposed to provide a cure, few studies have sought to deepen our understanding of the etiology of this disease. The genesis of inguinal protrusion seems to be a neglected subject, even though addressing hernia genesis may be helpful for improving techniques and materials for surgical treatment. To clarify the source of inguinal protrusions, macroscopic and histological alterations of the inferior epigastric vessels in the herniated groin have been studied. These vascular structures exhibit significant features that could help to illuminate hernia genesis. In patients with double ipsil…
gastric polypoid lesions. Our ecperience.
2010
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The Authors report the results of their experience on polypoids lesions of the stomach and on endoscopic polypectomies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A study on 2000 OGD (oesophagogastroduodenoscopy) has been carried out on 95 patients with polypoid lesions. The authors have analysed the associations existing between histological type and symptomatology and localisation of the lesion and the status of the Helicobacter pylori and the risk of cancerization. The data were confronted with the ones already available. RESULTS: In the majority of the cases, the polypoid lesions were asymptomatic, the localization changed according to the histological type, with the antrum as the most a…

1999
Scopo dello studio è una valutazione della funzionalità motoria gastrica in due popolazioni di neonati pre-termine, confrontati a un gruppo di nati a termine.
