Variability of pesticide mineralization in individual soil aggregates of millimeter size

2002

The aim of this study was to compare the 2,4-D mineralization in individual aggregates of millimeter size (3 size classes and 96 aggregates per size class). 14 CO 2 coming from the mineralization of 14 C ring-labeled 2,4-D and evolved by each aggregate incubated in microtiter plates was trapped with barium hydroxide on filters and measured using a Phosphorimager. We observed an important variability of mineralization in aggregates of each size class and in the different size classes of aggregates. The main factors responsible for these fluctuations could be a heterogeneous distribution of degrading microorganisms or of available carbon necessary for cometabolism.

Molecular characterization of cyclic and obligate parthenogens in the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.)

1996

Holocyclic clones of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) reproduce by cyclic parthenogenesis, whereas anholocyclic individuals are obligate parthenogens. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and random amplified polymorphic DNA markers in R . padi as well as plasmid DNA markers of its bacterial endosymbiont, Buchnera aphidicola , were examined to determine the extent of genetic divergence between clones with these differing breeding systems. These analyses revealed that cyclically parthenogenetic lineages possessed differing mtDNA and plasmid haplotypes than most obligately asexual clones. The extent of sequence divergence between these maternally inherited molecules suggests a relatively ancient origin…

Soil aggregates and humus systems

2016

The European Society for Soil Conservation Conference, organized by the Babes-Bolyai University will take place from 15th June to the 18th June 2016 at the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The conference will cover areas like Soils – Our Common Future” stresses the vital interconnection between soil and life, as well as its importance for the future of the human society.; International audience; The survey of few main morphological soil aggregates (with intrinsic biological, chemical and physical contents) reveals the existence of different humus systems. Recognizable by naked eyes in the field, each humus system is confined in an ecological frame (climate, ve…

Geometric optimal control : homotopic methods and applications

2012

This work is about geometric optimal control applied to celestial and quantum mechanics. We first dealt with the minimum fuel consumption problem of transfering a satellite around the Earth. This brought to the creation of the code HamPath which permits first of all to solve optimal control problem for which the command law is smooth. It is based on the Pontryagin Maximum Principle (PMP) and on the notion of conjugate point. This program combines shooting method, differential homotopic methods and tools to compute second order optimality conditions. Then we are interested in quantum control. We study first a system which consists in two different particles of spin 1/2 having two different r…

Electrochemistry of Bis(pyridine)cobalt (Nitrophenyl)corroles in Nonaqueous Media

2018

International audience; A series of bis(pyridine)cobalt corroles with one or three nitrophenyl groups on the meso positions of the corrole macrocycle were synthesized and characterized as to their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties in dichloromethane, benzonitrile, and pyridine. The potentials for each electrode reaction were measured by cyclic voltammetry and the electron-transfer mechanisms evaluated by analysis of the electrochemical data combined with UV-visible spectra of the neutral, electroreduced, and electroxidized forms of the corroles. The proposed electronic configurations of the initial compounds and the prevailing redox reactions involving the electroactive central c…

Linking species interactions with phylogenetic and functional distance in European bird assemblages at broad spatial scales

2017

Aim: Understanding the relative contribution of different species interactions in shaping community assembly has been a pivotal aim in community ecology. Biotic interactions are acknowledged to be important at local scales, although their signal is assumed to weaken over longer distances. We examine the relationship between positive, neutral and negative pairwise bird abundance distributions and the phylogenetic and functional distance between these pairs after first controlling for habitat associations. Location: France and Finland. Time period: 1984 to 2011 (Finland), 2001 to 2012 (France). Major Taxa studied: Birds. Methods: We used results from French and Finnish land bird monitoring pr…

The Sea Urchin sns Insulator Blocks CMV Enhancer following Integration in Human Cells

2001

Insulators are a new class of genetic elements that attenuate enhancer function directionally. Previously, we characterized in sea urchin a 265-bp-long insulator, termed sns. To test insulator activity following stable integration in human cells, we placed sns between the CMV enhancer and a tk promoter up-stream of a GFP transgene of plasmid or retroviral vectors. In contrast to controls, cells transfected or transduced with insulated constructs displayed a barely detectable fluorescence. Southern blot and PCR ruled out vector rearrangement following integration into host DNA; RNase protection confirmed the enhancer blocking activity. Finally, we demonstrate that two cis-acting sequences, p…
