The main challenge to be faced with prostate cancer (PCa) is the segregation and treatment of patients with life-threatening disease. As current prognostic, diagnostic and therapeutic tools are insufficient, solution is tried to be found from new biomarkers. This study describes the special characteristics encountered in pediatric surgical inpatient refugees compared to locally residing patients. Methods: Hospital records of minor refugees admitted to our department from 2005 up to and including 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. AbstractMost northern insect species experience a period of developmental arrest, diapause, which enables them to survive over the winter and postpone reproduction until favorable conditions. We studied the timing of reproductive diapause and its long-term effects on the cold tolerance of Drosophila montana, D. littoralis and D. ezoana females in seasonally varying environmental conditions. At the same time we traced expression levels of 219 genes in D. montana using a custom-made microarray. Study of the antioedema activity of some seaweed and sponge extracts from the mediterranean coast in mice

Chloroform and methanol extracts of ten marine species, seven seaweeds and three sponges, have been studied for possible, antioedema activities. The extracts were administered either topically or orally on TPA-induced mouse ear oedema and on carrageenan mouse paw oedema, respectively. The most interesting seaweed extracts were found to be from Corallina elongata, Galaxaura oblongata, Laurencia obtusa and Udotea petiolata, where both extracts of each species induced a large antioedema effect in both models employed. None of the sponges assayed demonstrated antiinflammatory effects on carrageenan mouse paw oedema, however, some extracts elicited an inhibition of the oedema developed by TPA.

In vivo activity of pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene lactones in acute and chronic inflammation.

The pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene lactones 4-alpha-O-acetyl-pseudoguaian-6beta-olide (1), hymenin (2), ambrosanolide (3), tetraneurin A (4), parthenin (5), hysterin (6) and confertdiolide (7) were evaluated for their ability to affect the inflammation responses induced by different agents. All the compounds showed activity against the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema. The ethyl phenylpropiolate (EPP)-induced mouse ear edema was inhibited by compounds 3, 5 and 7. Antiinflammatory activity and effects on isolated smooth muscle of extracts from differentTeucrium species

The present study analyses the antiinflammatory effects and the action on in vitro motility of methanol and dichloromethanol extracts and stems of four Teucrium species (T. flavum, T. cartaginenses, T. buxifolium and T. pumillum). The antiinflammatory activity was tested in the carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats. K+ and Na+ effects on the gelation properties of κ-Carrageenan

The effects of K(+), Na(+) ions and their mixture on the conformational transition and macroscopic gel properties of kappa-Carrageenan system have been studied using different experimental techniques. The macroscopic gelation properties of kappa-Carrageenan were found to be dependent upon cosolute type. Indeed, a more ordered and strong gel was obtained in the presence of K(+) with respect to Na(+) ions. The gel properties obtained using mixtures of two cosolutes are shown to depend on the [K(+)]/[Na(+)] ratio.
