Ikääntymisen myötä luustolihaksen rakenteessa ja toiminnassa tapahtuu monia muutoksia, jotka vaikuttavat lihaksen massaan ja suorituskykyyn heikentävästi. Lihassolujen määrä ja koko vähenee sekä rasva- ja sidekudoksen määrä lihaksessa kasvaa. Näihin muutoksiin vaikuttavat mm. hormonaaliset tekijät, mutta taustalla olevia tarkkoja mekanismeja ei vielä tunneta. Naisilla lihasvoiman heikkenemisen on havaittu kiihtyvän vaihdevuosi-iässä ja hormonikorvaushoidon on havaittu hidastavan tätä ilmiötä. This thesis took an innovative approach, which involved methodological development, to investigate microRNAs as candidate molecules and as genome-wide regulators of age, menopausal status and physical condition in both sexes. The focus was on potential serum microRNAs indicative of age, pre- or postmenopausal status, with or without estrogen- based hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and long-term physical training. MicroRNA associations with adiposity and inflammatory markers were also analyzed. Estrogeenituotannon vähenemistä pidetään eräänä osatekijänä naisten suorituskyvyn laskun kiihtymiselle, joka ajoittuu vaihdevuosien yhteyteen. Vaikka estrogeenin vaikutusmekanismia lihasten toiminnassa ei tunnetakaan kovin hyvin, on viitteitä, että estrogeenin vaikutus kohdistuu myosiinimolekyylin fosforylaatioon. The so-called “refugee crisis” in Lesvos, Greece provides a poignant example of situated, local suffering that has called for the coordination of global resources to provide relief. Some of the first to respond were local and international Citizen Initiatives for Global Solidarity (CIGS). While a growing role for CIGS has been interpreted as a call for more global involvement, arguments for the increased localization of relief efforts suggest the need for aid agents to maintain a reflexive awareness of the potential for an influx of outside assistance to disempower those most affected. This article analyzes experiences of racialization in stories of adult learners with refugee experience who attend a basic education program at a Finnish community college. Throughout a two-year ethnographic study, several students shared stories and thoughts on racialization and racism with the white researcher on site (the author). This article tells and theorizes their stories to gain a deeper understanding of the workings of everyday racialization and racism in a Finnish educational context. Small agency and precarious residency in Afghan refugee families

This chapter examines agency and ways of enduring suffering in Afghan families in a small Finnish town. Three stories, where the mothers and children have lived in Finland for some years already, but the fathers have arrived during the 2015 large-scale migration, are presented and analysed. Ethnographic methods are used in enquiring how family members endure suffering when they are faced with the threat of deportation of a family member. Our results show that fathers’ precarious residency has an impact on family members’ agency. In questo saggio, esploro la porta semiotica e pragmatica di un’azione (‘scivolare’), comunemente appartenente all’ambito del quotidiano, per mostrarne invece la valenza teorica e metateorica oltre che d’ordine pratico. Le domande che mi pongo sono le seguenti: come si può riflettere sul quotidiano in chiave antropologica? Come analizzare il senso di un concetto soltanto in apparenza d’uso comune? Come eludere la metafisica radicata nelle nostre proprie analisi? Per rispondere a queste domande, mi sono avvalso del concetto di gioco linguistico formulato da Wittgenstein rinviando allo ‘scivolare’ in opposizione all’‘attrito’ e, infine, al concetto stesso di ‘gioco linguistico’.
