Acidic cytosolic proteins are preferentially imported into rat liver lysosomes.
1998
Previous studies have reported that lysosomes isolated from human diploid fibroblasts and from rat liver can selectively import and degrade specific proteins. We have now reinvestigated this selectivity using an in vitro assay with rat liver lysosomes and an extract of cytosolic proteins prepared from cultured cells labeled to equilibriums with [35S-]methionine. Analysis by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and autoradiography of the cytosolic proteins bound to the lysosomal membrane and imported into the lysosomes shows that when all cytosolic proteins are simultaneously present in the in vitro assay the lysosomal uptake also occurs in a specific manner. These findings suggest that isola…
Identification and isolation of the primary aggregation factor from the cell membrane of the sponge Geodia cydonium
1985
The primary aggregation factor (pAF) of sponge cells is a glycoprotein that is firmly associated with the cell membrane. Polyspecific antibodies (anti-GM) prepared from sera raised against membranes of cells from the siliceous sponge Geodia cydonium were found to inhibit initial aggregation of homologous cells. The inhibition of aggregation, caused by anti-GM was neutralized by pAF. The pAF had been successfully solubilized and enriched by affinity chromatography, gel filtration and density gradient centrifugation, if checked by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of urea. The Mr of the native pAF was approximately 40 000 as estimated by gel filtration; under denaturing condi…

Syngeneia e tradizioni coloniali in Sicilia (IG XII, IV, 1, 222, 223; I Magnesia 72).

The Dialectics of Free Energy Minimization
2019
Karl Friston’s free energy minimization has been received with great enthusiasm. With good reason: it not only makes the bold claim to a unifying theory of the brain, but it is presented as an a priori principle applicable to living systems in general. In this article, we set out to show how the breadth of scope of Friston’s framework converges with the dialectics of Georg Hegel. Through an appeal to the work of Catherine Malabou, we aim to demonstrate how Friston not only reinvigorates Hegelian dialectics from the perspective of neuroscience, but that the implicit alignment with Hegel necessitates a reading of free energy minimization from the perspective of Hegel’s speculative philosophy.…
1. Recognition And Social Ontology: An Introduction
2011
One of Hegel's big ideas is that creatures with a self-conception are the subjects of developmental processes that exhibit a distinctive structure. Call a creature 'essentially self-conscious' if what it is for itself, its self- conception, is an essential element of what it is in itself. How something that is essentially self-conscious appears to itself is part of what it really is. This chapter shows how the tripartite account of erotic awareness can be used in a natural way to build a notion of recognition that satisfies these twin philosophical constraints on the interpretation of Hegel's notion of self-consciousness in terms of recognition. Doing so it clarifies the nature of the trans…
Synthesis of the aggregation pheromone of the Colorado potato beetle from its degradation product
2015
Incubation of the Colorado potato beetle aggregation pheromone, (S)-1,3-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethyl-6-octen-2-one, with antennal or leg extracts from this beetle gave 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one as the major product. This ketone was used as a substrate in a stereoselective synthesis of the pheromone. It was attached to the butanediacetal of glycolic acid with good stereoselectivity and the desired isomer was further enriched by purification of the product of this reaction on silica gel.
The Community of the Self
2016
The essay examines the hermeneutical criticism of Hegelian recognition, showing that this is based on the thesis of a reductive vision of the meaning of the negative in the Hegelian dialectic. According to hermeneutical thinking, despite his criticism of the abstract universal and his understanding of negation as relationship, Hegel doesn’t get definitely rid of the merely ‘logical’ sense of negation in terms of exclusion or elimination. Thus he conceives recognition as a definitive overcoming of diversity, and therefore of otherness. However, reconsidering the radical Hegelian recognition of reciprocity, the essay attempts to reverse this critical thesis showing how the very hermeneutical …
Determining a Random Schrödinger Operator : Both Potential and Source are Random
2020
We study an inverse scattering problem associated with a Schr\"odinger system where both the potential and source terms are random and unknown. The well-posedness of the forward scattering problem is first established in a proper sense. We then derive two unique recovery results in determining the rough strengths of the random source and the random potential, by using the corresponding far-field data. The first recovery result shows that a single realization of the passive scattering measurements uniquely recovers the rough strength of the random source. The second one shows that, by a single realization of the backscattering data, the rough strength of the random potential can be recovered…
