Violence and the Peasant Elite in Lower Satakunta (1550–1680)

“The lengthy quarrels over inheritance hint that these people had fiery tempers”, wrote Mauno Jokipii in his pioneering article on the history of the Lavila family—one of the prominent families of freeholders in Lower Satakunta.1 In our study on the women from that same family, Virpi Nissila and I have encountered about 100 court cases from the 1620 to the 1650s, in which six women from two generations have been present. Philosophical and Youth-Studies Perspectives on the Participation Imperative

In this article we analyse the concept of participation. The analysis is informed by both quantitative and qualitative youth studies conducted in Finland. To analyse different aspects of participation special emphasis is placed on the migrant young seeking asylum. Young can be seen as sometimes engaged and disengaged from the existing forms of participating. The results of the youth studies also show that there seems to be a gap between representative democracy and the peer-group-based forms of participation of the young. Alternative Civil Enculturation

The article investigates the ways in which minority schools in Latvia, Estonia, and Slovakia resist the dominant narratives of nation and citizenship and provide an alternative model of civil enculturation for students. It provides evidence to support the hypothesis that differences between competing narratives of statehood and nationhood among schools of two major ethnic groups in each country constitute relatively separate models of civil enculturation that may be shaped by political and social factors outside the school, such as power relations among groups.

In the concluding chapter the editors of the volume take a conversational look into the producing process of Nordic Girlhoods: New Perspectives and Outlooks. The authors discuss key contemporary issues and future perspectives in Nordic girlhood studies and foreground the political relevance of the research field in the contemporary societal situation. They call for reflexive and critical theorizations on what counts as the Nordic, especially when the girl is to be found in the middle of several nationalistic desires and conservative political discourses.

This chapter discusses the editorial work of the female abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman and examines how Chapman envisions the gift book—a collection of poetry, short fiction, essays, and letters designed to be given away as present to a loved one—as a transatlantic space in which political thinkers, writers, and intellectuals could exchange their ideas.
