2013

Published version of a chapter in the book: Likestilling 2013 : kunnskap og innovasjon på Agder, redigert av Hanne Stousland og Hilde Witsø.

The Importance of Friendship in the Construction of Positive Nations

2013

This chapter is written by two Argentineans, Graciela Tonon and Lia Rodriguez de la Vega, and brings interesting data from their own studies regarding friendship as relational glue for a positive nation. Departing from the results gathered, where friendship emerged as the variable ranked with the highest value for the people interviewed, they define the concept and its typologies and connect it with the idea of a positive nation, with Martin Seligman’s flourishing model, and, finally, with Aristotle’s idea of friendship as community. Alongside the chapter, we can understand, through the testimonies and words of the interviewed, the dynamic perspectives regarding friendship as an instrument …

De ungas uppfattningar om krig och fred

1985

Wahlstrom, R.: Youngsters' views on questions concerning war and peace. Nordisk Psykologi, 1985, 37 (4), 298–309. The paper is based on a study of 375 Finnish youngsters' views on questions concerning war and peace. These attitudes are examined in relation to the self-concept and moral development. The results show that girls apparently value peace more than boys do, that girls also participate in peace saving activities more than boys. For both sexes, moral development correlates with a positive attitude towards peace: he higher the moral stage, the more favourable the attitudes. A correlation between a strong self-concept and a favourable attitude towards peace was found only for the girl…

Reconstructing social spaces: The rhetoric of the public/ private split

1996

Abstract The article deals with the public/private distinction as a hidden spatialization that regulates the social. It looks at restructurations of the distinction; at changes and their political consequences in terms of ongoing rhetorical boundary work. The naming or coding of something as public or private is in itself a cultured process. The distinction is used in various meanings and within multiple discursive repertoires. What is named as public or private also varies in time and in space. Although variable and contextual, the coding always carries social value; it structures the societal positions of people. Furthermore, the coding also carries meanings that are not translatable. “Th…

Regional gender inequality in the Norwegian culture of equality

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Gender Issues. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12147-014-9131-0 This research project has its origin in statistical findings indicating that there has been a long-standing regional variation in the attainment of gender equality in Norway whereby the southern region has been identified as the least gender-equal. This is likely to be caused by an interaction of economic, political and cultural structures. Nevertheless, the understanding of this phenomenon remains incomplete since the cultural dimension too often ends up as a residual category or a dependent variable. The project seeks to explore the cultural dime…
