Early stage human colorectal cancer: prognostic value of nm23-H1 protein overexpression

Nm23 gene codifies for a nucleoside diphosphate kinase allowing the intracellular transduction of the signals. In colorectal cancer nm23 protein expression seems related to the progression of the disease. By immunohistochemistry we have studied the intracytoplasmatic nm23 H1 protein expression in 20 patients affected by colorectal cancer at initial stage. In 12 cases it resulted elevated and in four the disease recurred. The overexpression was not correlated with other prognostic factors. Nm23 H1-positive patients affected by colorectal cancer at initial stage could be considered at risk for disease recurrence and included in a more frequent follow-up protocol.

Medial tunica degeneration of the ascending aortic wall is associated with specific microRNA changes in bicuspid aortic valve disease

Ascending aortic diameter is not an accurate parameter for surgical indication in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Thus, the present study aimed to identify specific microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) and their expression levels in aortic wall aneurysm associated with BAV according to severity of medial degeneration and to elucidate the association between the tissue expression levels of the miRNAs with their expression in plasma. Migration of renal tumor cells depends on dephosphorylation of Shc by PTEN.

The tumor suppressor PTEN is a phosphatase using FAK and Shc as direct substrates, and Akt as a key effector via PIP3. PTEN regulates cell migration and may influence metastases. We quantified PTEN in 135 clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCC) by Western blot analysis and found statistically significant lower PTEN expression in patients who died, usually caused by metastases, within 5 years after surgery, compared to those surviving this time period. Early magnesium reduction in advanced colorectal cancer patients treated with cetuximab plus irinotecan as predictive factor of efficacy and outcome

Abstract Introduction: Magnesium plays a role in a large number of cellular metabolic reactions. Cetuximab is able to induce hypomagnesemia by interfering with magnesium (Mg2+) transport in the kidney. Correlation between GP-170 expression, prognosis, and chemoresistance of superficial bladder carcinoma.

To study GP-170 in superficial bladder cancer at initial diagnosis and at recurrence and to evaluate if intravesical chemoprophylaxis modifies the expression of GP-170 in tumor recurrences. GP-170 was retrospectively assessed in 160 patients affected by primary superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder and followed for up to 10 years. Eighty-four patients (52.5%) recurred after transurethral resection (TUR). Adjuvant intravesical chemotherapy after TUR was adopted in 52 patients. Regulator of G-protein Signaling 2 (RGS2) is a key regulator of G-protein-coupled signaling pathways involved in fear and anxiety. Data from rodent models and genetic analysis of anxiety-related traits and disorders in humans suggest down-regulation of RGS2 expression to be a risk factor for anxiety. The exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) comprises a spectrum of urogenital anomalies in which part or all of the distal urinary tract fails to close. The present study aimed to identify microaberrations characterized by loss or gain of genomic material that contribute to the EEC at a genome-wide level.
