Parasite community diversity in two Mediterranean labrid fishes Symphodus tinea and Labrus merula

Examination of 111 peacock wrasse [Symphodus tinea (L.)] and 97 brown wrasse (Labrus merula L.) from the Valencian coast (Spain) yielded 24 metazoan parasite species (11 Digenea, three Cestoda, four Nematoda. one Acanlhocephala, five Crustacea). Eighteen species were from 5. tinea and 17 from L. merula; 11 of the 24 species were common to both hosts. Brillouin's diversity index, was applied to fully censused parasite infracommunities. This is the first time that all the metazoan parasites (internal and external) in any position in the host have been analysed for diversity. We compared the distribution of the digenean Pholeter gastrophilus in the stomach of 27 harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena, 27 striped dolphins, Stenella coeruleoalba, 18 bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, and 100 long-finned pilot whales, Globicephala melas. The stomach of these species is composed of 4 chambers of different size, structure and function. In all species, P. gastrophilus was largely restricted to the glandular region of the stomach, but the parasite tended to favour the fundic chamber in bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises, the pyloric chamber in pilot whales, and none in striped dolphins. In this study, we clarify the taxonomic status of Allencotyla pricei based on a re-examination of paratypes and voucher specimens. Four important characters are added to previous descriptions: the vagina is ventral; the cirrus is absent; the eggs are fusiform and have two polar filaments (one about 3.5 times longer than the other); and, there are two flat sclerites at each side of the dorsal trident-shaped sclerite in the clamps. Ontogenetic Habitat Selection by Hadwenius pontoporiae (Digenea: Campulidae) in the Intestine of Franciscanas (Cetacea)

The linear habitat selection of 4 sequential maturity stages (1, 2, 3, and 4) of the trematode Hadwenius pontoporiae in the intestines of 26 South American dolphins Pontoporia blanvillei was investigated. The franciscana is a suitable host for H. pontoporiae because all 26 hosts were infected, the infrapopulations being composed mostly of gravid (stage 4) worms. Most trematodes were found in the first third of the intestine. The niches of the maturity stages decreased from stage 1 to 4. Gravid worms favored the most anterior part of the duodenum, whereas stages 1, 2, and 3 occurred more posteriorly in every host. We provide a check-list of Italian birds with major emphasis on the phenological categorization of each taxon, following the approach and updating the results of an analogous list previously published (Brichetti & Massa, 1998). In this list we based on the IOC World Bird List (Gill & Donsker, 2015) for nomenclature, species sequence and higher level taxonomy (from genus to order). This compilation takes into account the decisions made by the Italian Ornithological Commission (COI) and includes 548 species, recorded in Italy until the end of 2014.

This article explores the socio-political background that led to widespread Native American urban relocation in the period following World War II – a historical episode which is featured in Leslie Marmon Silko’s acclaimed novel Ceremony (1977). Through an analysis of the recycling, reinterpreting practices carried out by one of Ceremony’s memorable supporting characters, Navajo healer Betonie, Silko’s political aim to interrogate the state of things and to re-value Native traditions in a context of ongoing relations of coloniality is made most clear.
