An Innovative Measurement Approach for Load Flow Analysis in MV Smart Grids

2016

This paper proposes a novel measurement procedure for load flow analysis in medium voltage (MV) smart grids. The new approach is based on power measurements at low voltage (LV) side of MV/LV distribution substations. Such measurements are carried out by means of power quality analyzers. If compared with the load flow methods based on measurements at the MV side, the proposed approach has a lower cost and it offers an equally reliable measurement system. The proposed algorithm takes the basic concept of the current summation backward/forward method; some modifications are introduced to use LV load powers measurements. To this aim, the MV/LV power transformer is properly modeled and taken int…

Large Scale Control of Deferrable Domestic Loads in Smart Grids

2016

International audience; In this paper, we investigate a realistic and low-cost deployment of large scale direct control of inelastic home appliances whose energy demand cannot be shaped, but simply deferred. The idea is to exploit 1) some simple actuators to be placed on the electric plugs for connecting or disconnecting appliances with heterogeneous control interfaces, including non-smart appliances, and 2) the Internet connections of customers for transporting the activation requests from the actuators to a centralized controller. Our solution requires no interaction with home users: in particular, it does not require them to express their energy demand in advance. A queuing theory model …

You cannot speak and listen at the same time: a probabilistic model of turn-taking.

2017

Turn-taking is a preverbal skill whose mastering constitutes an important precondition for many social interactions and joint actions. However, the cognitive mechanisms supporting turn-taking abilities are still poorly understood. Here, we propose a computational analysis of turn-taking in terms of two general mechanisms supporting joint actions: action prediction (e.g., recognizing the interlocutor's message and predicting the end of turn) and signaling (e.g., modifying one's own speech to make it more predictable and discriminable). We test the hypothesis that in a simulated conversational scenario dyads using these two mechanisms can recognize the utterances of their co-actors faster, wh…

A New Low Cost Coupling System for Power Line Communication on Medium Voltage Smart Grids

2018

This paper proposes and verifies the performance of an innovative and low cost coupling system for power line communication (PLC) on medium voltage (MV) smart grids. The coupling system makes use of the capacitive divider of the voltage detecting systems (VDSs) to inject and receive the PLC signal. VDS are usually already installed in the MV switchboards of the major electrical manufacturer all over the world according to IEC 61243-5. VDS are used to detect the presence of the mains voltage to guarantee personnel safety. An interface circuit has been developed to be connected between the PLC transceiver and the VDS socket. In this way, the PLC signal can be coupled to the MV network without…

Static and dynamic policies with RFID for the scheduling of retrieval and storage warehouse operations

2013

Warehouses are essential components of logistics and supply chains. The performance of warehouse operations significantly affects the efficiency of the whole chain it belongs to. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an emerging technology capable of providing real-time information about the location and properties of tagged object(s), such as people, equipment or products. The objective of this article is threefold, to propose and compare different offline and online policies for the scheduling of warehouse operations, to design a tool that allows the decision maker to compare policies and environments without putting them into practice, and to study the benefits that can be obtained if…

Effective digital collaboration in the construction industry – A case study of BIM deployment in a hospital construction project

2015

We examine a case of successful integrated BIM-based design in a construction project. We present a set of key factors influential to enable digital collaboration in this project.Key factors identified include: change agents, new roles, cloud computing, contracts, etc.We found integrated design to depend upon changing traditional work practices. The case is an example of BIM implementation and collaborative work in the AEC industry. Building information modeling (BIM) and related digital innovations can serve as a catalyst for more transparency, tighter integration, and increased productivity in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Yet, many project teams struggle with ho…

A Multi-Objective Approach to Optimize a Periodic Maintenance Policy

2012

The present paper proposes a multi-objective approach to find out an optimal periodic maintenance policy for a repairable and stochastically deteriorating multi-component system over a finite time horizon. The tackled problem concerns the determination of the system elements to replace at each scheduled and periodical system inspection by ensuring the simultaneous minimization of both the expected total maintenance cost and the expected global system unavailability time. It is assumed that in the case of system elements failure they are instantaneously detected and repaired by means of minimal repair actions in order to rapidly restore the system. A nonlinear integer mathematical programmi…

ECONOMIC-STATISTICAL DESIGN APPROACH FOR A VSSI X-BAR CHART CONSIDERING TAGUCHI LOSS FUNCTION AND RANDOM PROCESS SHIFTS

2014

Economic design approaches of control charts are commonly based on the assumption that various cost parameters values and the occurrence risk of assignable causes have to be a priori known with precision. However, in real operative contexts, such parameters can be really difficult to accurately estimate, especially considering costs arising from out-of-control conditions of the process. As consequence, pure economic design approaches can involve chart schemes with low statistical performance. To overcome such limitation, it is herein proposed a multi-objective economic-statistical design approach for an adaptive X-bar chart. In particular, such approach aims at the minimization of both the…
