Age-Correlated Incremental Consideration of Velocity Information in Relative Time-to-Arrival Judgments
2010
International audience; One hundred fifty-one children and 43 adults judged which of 2 cartoon birds would be the first to arrive at a common finish line. Objects moved unidirectionally along parallel trajectories, either at the same or different speeds, and disappeared at different distances from the goal. Overall, 9-10-year-old children performed as well as adults, but 4-5- and 6-8-year-olds erred significantly more often. On trials for which distance to goal at disappearance was a valid cue, 4-5-year-olds scored 80% correct, and no differences were seen between 6-10-year-olds and adults. On the opposite type of trials, where the trailing bird would win the race, only adults retained thei…
First-principles simulations of H centers in CaF2
2014
Abstract H center, a hole trapped at an interstitial anion site, placed in the bulk and the (1 1 1) surface of calcium fluoride CaF2, has been studied by using density functional theory (DFT) with hybrid exchange potentials, namely DFT-B3PW. The H center orients the (1 1 1) direction for the bulk case and the (1 0 0) direction for the surface case, and the hole is mainly localized on the interstitial fluorine. The surface H center leads to a remarkable XY-translation of the surface atoms. Spin and hyperfine coupling calculations show a considerable interaction between the unpaired spin and the spin of neighboring nuclei, and the surface effect strengthens the spin polarization and hyperfine…
Oxidation of small gas phase Pd clusters: A density functional study
2006
The adsorption sites of O2 on neutral PdN clusters (N = 1–4) were studied using spin density functional theory. Only for Pd1O2 molecular adsorption is found to be favorable. For Pd2–4O2 dissociative adsorption with the oxygen sitting on Pd bridge sites is preferred. Most Pd clusters remain in the same high spin states found for pure gas phase Pd clusters. Only the ground state of Pd4O2 increase its spin from a triplet to a quintet state. For molecular adsorption the O–O bond gets activated to a superoxo-like state.
Mathematical analysis of the stimulus for the lateral line organ
1985
Behavioral studies have shown that a blind fish is capable of detecting and recognizing stationary objects in its surroundings. It is proposed that the displacement of water caused by the fish as it moves is the basis for this detection capability. Alterations in the displacement of water around the fish, caused by the obstacle, act as stimuli for the lateral line organ. The question of how these stimuli acting on the skin of the fish, image the environment and what information is thus made available to the fish is the concern of this paper. The stimuli for the lateral line organ are derived mathematically. Two cases are treated: that of a fish gliding past an obstacle and that of one appro…
Rapid construction of algebraic axioms from samples
1991
Abstract An axiom is called reliable if it is confirmed in several places in a given sample of algebra. A very effective algorithm for enumerating such axioms is described.
A Realistic Model to Support Rescue Operations After an Earthquake via UAVs
2022
In this paper, we consider the problem of completely flying over an area just hit by an earthquake with a fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to opportunely direct rescue teams. The cooperation between UAVs ensures that the search for possible survivors can be faster and more effective than the solutions currently implemented by civil protection. To study this scenario, we introduce the Cover by Multitrips with Priorities (CMP) problem, which tries to keep into account all the main real-life issues connected to the flight and coordination of the UAVs. We conduct a theoretical study to estimate the best number of UAVs and additional batteries, to give indications to the organization tha…
Leisure Adjustments of Older Finnish Adults during the Early Stages of the COVID-19 Pandemic
2022
The current approach to “aging well” emphasizes the importance of active leisure participation in late adulthood. This relates to the view that leisure activities enable older adults to stay physically, mentally, and socially active, and they thereby contribute to wellbeing. In spring 2020, leisure activity engagement was significantly hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explores leisure-related experiences and adaptation strategies among Finnish older adults during the period of strict physical distancing. The data comprises letters (N = 77) written by Finnish people (aged 70–93) that were analyzed using content analysis. The study suggests that the reorganization of leisure was …
The composition of data economy : a bibliometric approach and TCCM framework of conceptual, intellectual and social structure
2022
Purpose The data economy mainly relies on the surveillance capitalism business model, enabling companies to monetize their data. The surveillance allows for transforming private human experiences into behavioral data that can be harnessed in the marketing sphere. This study aims to focus on investigating the domain of data economy with the methodological lens of quantitative bibliometric analysis of published literature. Design/methodology/approach The bibliometric analysis seeks to unravel trends and timelines for the emergence of the data economy, its conceptualization, scientific progression and thematic synergy that could predict the future of the field. A total of 591 data between 200…
