An efficient method for fully automatic 3D digitization of unknown objects

2013

Our goal is to develop a complete and automatic scanning strategy with minimum prior information about the object shape. We aim to establish a methodology for the automation of the 3D digitization process. The paper presents a novel approach to determine the Next Best View (NBV) for an efficient reconstruction of highly accurate 3D models. Our method is based on the classification of the acquired surfaces into Well Visible and Barely Visible combined with a best view selection algorithm based on mean shift, which avoids unreachable positions. Our approach is applicable to all kinds of range sensors. To prove the efficiency and the robustness of our method, test objects are first scanned man…

IEEE Access Special Section Editorial : Cloud and Big Data-Based Next-Generation Cognitive Radio Networks

2019

In cognitive radio networks (CRN), secondary users (SUs) are required to detect the presence of the licensed users, known as primary users (PUs), and to find spectrum holes for opportunistic spectrum access without causing harmful interference to PUs. However, due to complicated data processing, non-real-time information exchange and limited memory, SUs often suffer from imperfect sensing and unreliable spectrum access. Cloud computing can solve this problem by allowing the data to be stored and processed in a shared environment. Furthermore, the information from a massive number of SUs allows for more comprehensive information exchanges to assist the resource allocation and interference ma…

Model-based specification and validation of the dual-mode adaptive MAC protocol

2018

Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs) rely on MAC protocols to coordinate access to the wireless medium access and for managing the radio unit on each device. The dual-mode adaptive MAC (DMAMAC) protocol is a recently proposed protocol designed to reduce the energy consumption of the radio communication in WSANs. The DMAMAC protocol targets the industrial WSANs used for real-time process control. At its core, DMAMAC exploits the distinction between transient and steady of the controlled plant process to dynamically adapt the MAC superframe structure and thereby conserve energy. The switch between steady and transient mode of operation is a safety-critical part of the protocol. The c…

Adapted Transfer of Distance Measures for Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships and Data-Driven Selection of Source Datasets

2012

Quantitative structure–activity relationships are regression models relating chemical structure to biological activity. Such models allow to make predictions for toxicologically relevant endpoints, which constitute the target outcomes of experiments. The task is often tackled by instance-based methods, which are all based on the notion of chemical (dis-)similarity. Our starting point is the observation by Raymond and Willett that the two families of chemical distance measures, fingerprint-based and maximum common subgraph-based measures, provide orthogonal information about chemical similarity. This paper presents a novel method for finding suitable combinations of them, called adapted tran…

On the Use of GPU for Accelerating Communication-Aware Mapping Techniques

2015

Different communication-aware mapping techniques were proposed in recent years for improving the performance of distributed systems based on both, off-chip and on-chip networks. Some of these proposals were based on heuristic search for finding pseudo-optimal assignments of tasks and processing elements. However, the technology integration improvements have allowed a significant increase in the number of network nodes, requiring the acceleration of the heuristic search. In this paper, we propose a comparative study of the local search method used in a communication-aware mapping technique, when implemented on different parallel architectures. We compare the performance provided by a version…

2021

This paper proposes a new method for blind mesh visual quality assessment (MVQA) based on a graph convolutional network. For that, we address the node classification problem to predict the perceived visual quality. First, two matrices representing the 3D mesh are considered: a graph adjacency matrix and a feature matrix. Both matrices are used as input to a shallow graph convolutional network. The network consists of two convolutional layers followed by a max-pooling layer to provide the final feature representation. With this structure, the Softmax classifier predicts the quality score category without the reference mesh’s availability. Experiments are conducted on four publicly available …

Autonomic Computing through Reuse of Variability Models at Runtime: The Case of Smart Homes

2009

Our research shows that autonomic behavior can be achieved by leveraging variability models at runtime. In this way, the modeling effort made at design time is not only useful for producing the system but also provides a richer semantic base for autonomic behavior during execution. The use of variability models at runtime brings new opportunities for autonomic capabilities by reutilizing the efforts invested at design time. Our proposed approach has two aspects: reuse of design knowledge to achieve AC and reuse of existing model-management technologies at runtime. We developed the Model-Based Reconfiguration Engine (MoRE) to implement model-management operations. Our research demonstrates t…

CRM in the digital age: implementation of CRM in three contemporary B2B firms

2015

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to contribute to the current discussion on digitization in companies’ marketing from a customer relationship management (CRM) perspective by examining the role and objectives of CRM and the exploitation of social media to serve the objectives of CRM in contemporary business-to-business (B2B) companies. Design/methodology/approach – The data are collected through semi-structured themed interviews with key marketing/sales managers from three B2B firms. Findings – CRM seems to be moving closer to the company’s core activity and becoming everybody’s business to a greater extent than ever before, but its main goal, to enhance customer relationships, will …

Energy Efficient Scheduling in Content Distribution Collaborative Mobile Clusters

2020

Most of the existing literatures on green communications aimed to improve the energy efficiency at the base station or data server. However, in order to fully experience high rate broadband multimedia services, prolonging the battery life of user equipment is also critical for the mobile terminals, especially for the smartphone users. In this work, we investigate the problem of designing a content distribution mobile platform named collaborative mobile clusters (CMC) via user cooperation to reduce the energy consumption at the terminal side. Specifically, given numbers of users interested in downloading a common content from the operator, both centralized and distributed user grouping and s…
