Unsteady turbulence in plane channel flow

Abstract Direct numerical simulations were conducted for oscillating flow with zero time mean (reciprocating flow) in a plane channel subject to a harmonic forcing term of varying amplitude and frequency. The results confirmed the existence of four flow regimes (laminar, “disturbed laminar”, intermittently turbulent, and fully turbulent) depending on the above parameters. The flow behaviour was found to depend on the complex interplay of mean and turbulence quantities, as described by the closed loop formed by the streamwise Reynolds-averaged momentum equation in conjunction with the exact transport equations for the turbulent (Reynolds) stresses. Turbulence structure and budgets in curved pipes

Abstract Turbulent flow in curved pipes was investigated by Direct Numerical Simulation. Three curvatures δ (pipe radius a /curvature radius c ) were examined: δ  = 0 (straight pipe), simulated for validation and comparison purposes; δ  = 0.1; and δ  = 0.3. The friction velocity Reynolds number (based on the pipe radius a ) was 500 in all cases, yielding bulk Reynolds numbers of ∼17,000, ∼15,000 and ∼12,000 for δ  = 0, 0.1 and 0.3, respectively. The computational domain was ten pipe radii in length and was resolved by up to 20 × 10 6 hexahedral finite volumes. Long-Time Preservation of Nonlocal Entanglement

We investigate how nonlocal entanglement, as identified by violations of a Bell inequality, may be preserved during the evolution. Our system consists of two qubits each embedded in a zero-temperature bosonic reservoir evolving independently and initially in an entangled mixed state. We show that the violation of the Bell inequality can be related to the single-qubit population of excited state in such a way that, by appropriately choosing structured environments that give rise to sufficiently high values of population trapping, long-time preservation of nonlocal entanglement can be correspondingly achieved.

A vorticity based aeroacoustic prediction for the noise emission of a low-speed turbulent internal flow

Abstract Turbulent internal flows are known to generate intense noise as well as surface pressure fluctuations. Numerically predicting the noise emission near the prescribed boundaries requires that the sound-generating turbulent flow be adequately represented and described. The k – e method provides a promising tool for obtaining the unsteady characteristics of a realistic turbulent flow interacting with a rectangular flat plate undergoing “ground effect”. Imaging Performance of a Diffractive Corneal Inlay for Presbyopia in a Model Eye

[EN] In this work we evaluated the imaging properties of the Diffractive Corneal Inlay (DCI), a novel type of corneal implant working by diffraction that we proposed for the treatment of presbyopia. ZEMAX OpticStudio software was employed for the numerical assessment, with simulations performed in a human-based eye model. In the ray tracing analysis, we used the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), the Area under the MTF (AMTF), and the Point Spread Function (PSF). Small and medium-sized companies have an impact on the environment where they operate. In some cases, the effects on the environment can be significant within local communities leading to a series of negative processes, such as emission pollution into the atmosphere, the discharges to rivers and seas, the production of waste; in some cases, it makes the contamination to the soil. Modeling elastic properties of short flax fiber-reinforced composites by orientation averaging

Abstract Natural fibers of plant origin, used as reinforcement in polymer matrix composite materials, exhibit highly anisotropic elastic properties due to their complex internal structure. Mechanical properties can be evaluated not only by tests but also by mechanical models reflecting the principal morphological features of fibers. Quantum chemical modelling of point defects in KNbO3 perovskite crystals

Abstract We present results of semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations for several perovskite KNb x Ta 1−x O 3 (KTN) solid solutions, as well as point intrinsic defects – F centers and hole polarons bound to K vacancy – in KNbO 3 . Method of the intermediate neglect of the differential overlap (INDO) was combined with typically 320-atom supercells and atomic geometry optimization. Analysis of the optimized atomic and electronic structure has clearly demonstrated that several nearest Nb atoms substituting for Ta in KTaO 3 – unlike Ta impurities in KNbO 3 – reveal the self-ordering effect, which probably triggers the ferroelectricity observed in KTN. Transducers for the bidirectional decoding of prefix codes

AbstractWe construct a transducer for the bidirectional decoding of words encoded by the method introduced by Girod (1999) in [5] and we prove that it is bideterministic and that it can be used both for the left-to-right and the right-to-left decoding.We also give a similar construction for a transducer that decodes in both directions words encoded by a generalization of Girod’s encoding method. We prove that it has the same properties as those of the previous transducer. In addition we show that it has a single initial/final state and that it is minimal.
