On the invariant symmetries of the $\mathcal{D}$-metrics

2007

We analyze the symmetries and other invariant qualities of the $\mathcal{D}$-metrics (type D aligned Einstein Maxwell solutions with cosmological constant whose Debever null principal directions determine shear-free geodesic null congruences). We recover some properties and deduce new ones about their isometry group and about their quadratic first integrals of the geodesic equation, and we analyze when these invariant symmetries characterize the family of metrics. We show that the subfamily of the Kerr-NUT solutions are those admitting a Papapetrou field aligned with the Weyl tensor.

Nonlinear Gravity Theories in the Metric and Palatini Formalisms

2004

We study nonlinear gravity theories in both the metric and the Palatini (metric-affine) formalisms. The nonlinear character of the gravity lagrangian in the metric formalism causes the appearance of a scalar source of matter in Einstein's equations that can be interpreted as a quintessence field. However, in the Palatini case no new energy sources appear, though the equations of motion get modified in such a way that usual matter can lead to repulsive gravity at very low densities. Thus, the Palatini formalism could provide a mechanism to explain the recent acceleration of the universe without the necessity of dark energy sources. We also show that in contrast to the metric formalism where …

Accelerating Observers, Area and Entropy

2005

We consider an explicit example of a process, where the entropy carried by radiation through an accelerating two-plane is proportional to the decrease in the area of that two-plane even when the two-plane is not a part of any horizon of spacetime. Our results seem to support the view that entropy proportional to area is possessed not only by horizons but by all spacelike two-surfaces of spacetime.

The combinatorics of the SU(2) black hole entropy in loop quantum gravity

2009

We use the combinatorial and number-theoretical methods developed in previous work by the authors to study black hole entropy in the new proposal put forward by Engle, Noui and Perez. Specifically we give the generating functions relevant for the computation of the entropy and use them to derive its asymptotic behavior including the value of the Immirzi parameter and the coefficient of the logarithmic correction.

Light ring images of double photon spheres in black hole and wormhole spacetimes

2022

The silhouette of a black hole having a critical curve (an unstable bound photon orbit) when illuminated by an optically thin accretion disk whose emission is confined to the equatorial plane shows a distinctive central brightness depression (the shadow) whose outer edge consists of a series of strongly lensed, self-similar rings superimposed with the disk's direct emission. While the size and shape of the critical curve depend only on the background geometry, the pattern of bright and dark regions (including the size and depth of the shadow itself) in the image is strongly influenced by the (astro)physics of the accretion disk. This aspect makes it difficult to extract clean and clear obse…

Structure and stability of traversable thin-shell wormholes in Palatini f(R) gravity

2020

We study the structure and stability of traversable wormholes built as (spherically symmetric) thin shells in the context of Palatini f(R) gravity. Using a suitable junction formalism for these theories we find that the effective number of degrees of freedom on the shell is reduced to a single one, which fixes the equation of state to be that of massless stress-energy fields, contrary to the general relativistic and metric f(R) cases. Another major difference is that the surface energy density threading the thin shell, needed in order to sustain the wormhole, can take any sign and may even vanish, depending on the desired features of the corresponding solutions. We illustrate our results by…

Analytic solution of the algebraic equation associated to the Ricci tensor in extended Palatini gravity

2013

In this work we discuss the exact solution to the algebraic equation associated to the Ricci tensor in the quadratic $f(R,Q)$ extension of Palatini gravity. We show that an exact solution always exists, and in the general case it can be found by a simple matrix diagonalization. Furthermore, the general implications of the solution are analysed in detail, including the generation of an effective cosmological constant, and the recovery of the $f(R)$ and $f(Q)$ theories as particular cases in their corresponding limit. In addition, it is proposed a power series expansion of the solution which is successfully applied to the case of the electromagnetic field. We show that this power series expan…

Postinationary vacuum instability and Higgs-inflaton couplings

2016

The Higgs-inflaton coupling plays an important role in the Higgs field dynamics in the early Universe. Even a tiny coupling generated at loop level can have a dramatic effect on the fate of the electroweak vacuum. Such Higgs-inflaton interaction is present both at the trilinear and quartic levels in realistic reheating models. In this work, we examine the Higgs dynamics during the preheating epoch, focusing on the effects of the parametric and tachyonic resonances. We use lattice simulations and other numerical tools in our studies. We find that the resonances can induce large fluctuations of the Higgs field which destabilize the electroweak vacuum. Our considerations thus provide an upper …

On the tensor-to-scalar ratio in large single-field inflation models

2015

We show that generically the tensor-to-scalar ratio in large single-field inflation scenarios is bounded to be larger than $\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$ for the spectral index in the range favored by observations.
