Unaccompanied Minors in Greece and Italy: An Exploration of the Challenges for Social Work within Tighter Immigration and Resource Constraints in Pan…
2021
The number of unaccompanied minors (UAMs) arriving in the European Union (EU) has been increasing dramatically over recent years resulting in the formulation of EU policy directives around safeguarding and well-being. Notably, the majority of UAMs enter Europe irregularly through two main gateways to the European continent: via Italy, using the Central Mediterranean Sea route
Does Tourism Consumption Behaviour Mirror Differences in Living Standards?
2016
Based on the theoretical foundation of well-being measurement, the study explores differences in living standards by analysing the distribution of tourism expenditure. A mixture of regression models is used to explore the heterogeneity in tourism consumption by identifying groups of families with similar tourism consumption behaviour as a function of certain socio-demographic and economic factors. The empirical analysis, performed on Italian expenditure data, suggests that there are three different patterns of consumption behaviour conditional to the socio-demographic and economic covariates in the tourism market and that differences in tourism consumption between groups of households mirro…
Do individuals with higher cognitive ability play more strategically?
2016
Abstract This paper experimentally analyses the relationship between cognitive ability and strategic behaviour. In our experiment, individuals play in a sequential game, where computing the equilibrium is challenging. On completion of the game, we measure each player’s cognitive ability using Raven’s Progressive Matrices test. Our results reveal that the number of strategic decisions (played in the sequential game) increases significantly among those individuals with higher cognitive ability (measured by Raven’s test), compared to those with lower cognitive ability. These results clearly confirm that individuals with higher cognitive abilities play more strategically.
Promoting Admiration of Foucault Hiding his Defense of Rape and Pederasty
2022
Foucault has been quoted as a great intellectual contributor to feminism and education, despite his defense of decriminalizing rape and pederasty. Since the MeToo movement, there is an increasing criticism of Foucault’s persona and works. However, in order to avoid recognizing their mistake, some authors say that Foucault’s defense of sexual violence was unknown before. This article shows this is not backed by evidence. Data was collected via interviews with 19 subjects with diverse profiles, employing the communicative methodology. The results shed light on the fact that some professors who have included Foucault’s works in their classes hid Foucault’s position in favor of sexual violence …
Ownership, responsibility and leadership – a historical perspective
1999
The aim of this article is to present the great lines of managerial thoughts concerning ownership, business, social responsibility and leadership. The perspective of consideration is historical, and especially conceptual. We noticed that in the twentieth century a modern business ideology began to take form. Old suppositions according to the classical economic theory about the nature of economic activities started to give way when the modern professional manager type came into the management of the firm. At that time also there developed the idea of the firm as an institution with many targets. The position of the firm in society changed, people started to make demands for a wider social re…
The untranslatability of a text and the non-equivalence of words
2020
This article deals with the current state of development of two main categories of modern translation theory: “untranslatability” and “non-equivalence”. Untranslatability belongs to translation-theoretic universals and is a binary category. The essence of the phenomenon, its nature, as well as such concepts as “translation losses”, “untranslatable units”, “translatological classification of text types” are considered. The differences in the meaning of the concepts “untranslatability” and “non-equivalence” are described. The article objective is to show actuality and pecularity of their manifistation in the context of the Russian and German languages.
Testing Heckscher— Ohlin—Vanek Model Using Spanish Regional Data
2008
The authors conduct an empirical study of the Heckscher—Ohlin—Vanek (HOV) model of trade using regional data rather than country data. Findings for Spanish regions suggest that relaxing the assumption of world factor price equalization alone is not enough to improve the performance of the HOV model. The supposition of world identical and homothetic preferences must also be relaxed. The authors also test whether Spanish regions share the same production techniques. Allowing for productivity-adjusted factor price equalization across regions or region-specific input—output matrices contributes very little toward improving the HOV model's predictive power, suggesting that the state of technolo…
Space-time analysis of GDP disparities among European regions : a Markov chains approach
2004
The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution of the disparities between 138 European regions over the 1980-1995 period. We characterize the regional per capita GDP cross-sectional distribution by means of nonparametric estimations of density functions and we model the growth process as a first-order stationary Markov chain. Spatial effects are then introduced within the Markov chain framework using regional conditioning (Quah, 1996b) and spatial Markov chains (Rey, 2001). The results of the analysis indicate the persistence of regional disparities, a progressive bias toward a poverty trap and the importance of geography to explain the convergence process.
Territorial Capital and Growth over the Great Recession: a Local Analysis for Italy"
2017
The consequences of the crisis have been mainly analyzed at national/ international levels, neglecting its differential effects on local areas. Notwithstanding the international character of the Great Recession, the different local structural features might have influenced the economic and social impact of the crisis, determining effects on the resilience and recovery chance. In this paper, we focus on the role of different territorial indicators by looking at how their relevance has changed during the recent crisis at provincial level. Our aim is threefold. First, we identify the strategic territorial elements which might be particularly relevant in ensuring a greater local absorption capa…
