Juxtacortical mandibular chondrosarcoma during pregnancy : a case report

2017

Chondrosarcoma is one of the most common malignant bone tumors in adults. It use to affect upper arm, pelvis and thigh bone. A wide surgical extirpation represent the gold standard to treat this disorder. In fact, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are no useful. Interestingly, chondrosarcoma is rare in head and neck (HNCS) and extremely uncommon during pregnancy. Thus, there is a lack of evidence about the proper treatment in these cases. A wide surgical extirpation is also considered the most effective procedure in HNCS. There are no consistent evidences about the he role of radiation and chemotherapy. In view of that, the present study describes a case of juxtacortical mandibular chondrosarco…

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the head and neck in pediatric patients: a systematic review.

2022

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a soft tissue malignant tumor of mesenchymal cell origin, which usually shows variable differentiation of muscle cells. It is the most common solid sarcoma in children. The most usual site of occurrence are the head and neck regions. RMS presents a variety of histologic features, and so differential diagnosis with other small round cell tumors is needed. Hence, it has been very useful to the field to undertake additional immunohistochemical studies to determine the diagnosis and, on occasions, to assign subtype tumors. A systematic review of three databases (Medline, Biological Science Collection and Health & Medical Collection) was carried out with the purpose of …

Undergraduate Students’ Acceptance of a Reciprocating One-File System for Endodontic Treatment

2020

Abstract Objectives Reciprocating endodontic one-file systems are a comparatively new method for root canal shaping. Even though the mechanical properties are comparable to modern rotating mechanical systems, data about subjective assessment and application quality are scarce. This study evaluates the reciprocating one-file system in undergraduate education. Materials and Methods A total of 42 undergraduate students without experience regarding reciprocating file systems filled in a questionnaire in four different points in time (t 1–t 4) anonymously. The questionnaire was based on a numerical rating scale ranging from 0 to 10. Statistical Analysis A least significant difference post-hoc an…

Mucocutaneous diseases with manifestations in the head and neck region: 24 years of experience in a Dermatology service

2023

This study aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological features of mucocutaneous diseases with manifestation in the head and neck region. A retrospective analysis of a dermatology reference center database was carried out. Over 24 years. Clinicopathological data were collected from medical records and the data was analyzed by descriptive statistics. A total of 11.538 medical records were analyzed, being 152 cases of mucocutaneous diseases with manifestations in the head and neck region. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus was the most prevalent diagnosis (66.4%). Face (44.1%), females (79.6%), and patients with 45 years mean age were the most common features. In the oral cavity, the most affected r…

Dental implants rehabilitation in a patient with head and neck radiotherapy for osteosarcoma in the jaw. A clinical case report

2021

A 52-year-old female patient with a diagnostic of osteosarcoma in the mandible, in which it was necessary a reconstruction with a microvascularized osteomyocutaneous fibula bone. Coadjuvant chemotherapy was scheduled. Two years later, 4 osseointegrated implants (OII) were placed in the fibula a 2 OII in the right mandible, using a splint guided surgery. The final prosthodontic consisted in a metal ceramic restoration using CAD/ CAM technology. Key words:Oral rehabilitation, oral cancer, head and neck radiotherapy, oral oncology.

Clinical characteristics of oral chronic graft-versus-host disease according to the 2014 National Institutes of Health (USA) consensus criteria.

2022

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) is a serious and common complication of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). The oral cavity is the second most common site affected by cGVHD. In 2014, the 2005 National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus criteria were revised to address areas of controversy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of oral cGVHD using the 2014 NIH consensus criteria. The baseline data of oral manifestation of patients, who were diagnosed with oral cGVHD, in the first dental visit were analyzed (n=22). The oral mucosal disease was evaluated by NIH modified Oral Mucosa Rating Scale (OMRS) and Thongprasom sign score. The…

Liquid biopsy in the assessment of microRNAs in oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review

2022

The identification of non-invasive biomarkers from biological fluids collected by liquid biopsy provides new horizons for individualized therapeutic strategies and improves clinical decision-making in OSCC patients. Circulating microRNAs have emerged as biomarkers that may reflect not only the existence of cancer, but also the dynamic, malignant potential, and drug resistance of tumors. The aim of the systematic review is to evaluate and summarize the results of the published studies regarding the use of microRNAs as biomarkers for OSCC.A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases till November 2020. A total of 34 studies met the inclusion crit…

Isolated lip dermatitis (atopic cheilitis), successfully treated with topical tacrolimus 0.03%

2020

Background Exfoliative and erosive cheilitis, may be a source of speech and chewing discomfort, but may also be an aesthetic issue for the patients affected. Such a clinical presentation may implicate a variety of inflammatory conditions, including atopic (eczematous) cheilitis. Topical and systemic agents, e.g. corticosteroids, have been used to treat inflammatory lip conditions. Topical tacrolimus has also been used in some inflammatory lip conditions. Material and Methods We performed a retrospective clinical analysis of atopic cheilitis patients. Results Between 2015 and 2020, we addressed 7 (seven) patients with atopic dermatitis affecting only lips and were diagnosed as atopic-eczemat…

Evaluation of jaw bone changes in patients with asthma using inhaled corticosteroids with mandibular radiomorphometric indices on dental panoramic ra…

2023

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) are an effective drug commonly used in asthma treatment. It is known that osteoporotic changes can occur secondary to steroid usage, depending on dosage and duration. The aim of this study was to compare radiomorphometric indices and fractal dimension on panoramic images of patients with asthma using ICSs and healthy controls. A total of 66 dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) taken from 32 patients with asthma using ICSs and 34 healthy individuals were evaluated in this retrospective study. Panoramic mandibular index inferior and superior (PMI-i,PMI-s), mandibular cortical width (MCW), gonial index (GI), antegonial index (AI), mandibular cortical index (MCI), …
