Risk factors, complications and management of lymphocele formation after radical prostatectomy: A mini‐review

2019

Lymphocele formation is the most common adverse event of pelvic lymphadenectomy during radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Previous studies failed to favor one surgical technique over the other in terms of minimizing its rate. Data on risk factors for its development are still conflicting and warranting further research. In this mini-review, we aimed to scrutinize available evidence on these aspects and outline current achievements in lymphocele prevention approaches.

Preemptive hydrocelectomy in subinguinal varicocelectomy

2008

Background/Aims: The hydrocele rate is very low after microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy, but microsurgical expertise is not always available in pediatric centers. We describe a modified technique to reduce the hydrocele rate after subinguinal varicocelectomy performed without an operating microscope. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 142 non-microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomies performed at a single pediatric center. In 96 patients, varicocelectomy was combined with the excision and eversion of the tunica vaginalis (‘pre-emptive hydrocelectomy’) while in the remaining 46 cases the vaginalis was left untouched. Resu…

Dental implications in oral cancer patients

2011

Objectives. A study is made of the dental implications of oral cancer, with a view to avoiding the complications that appear once oncological treatment is started. Patients and Methods. The study comprised a total of 22 patients diagnosed with oral cancer according to clinical and histological criteria in the Service of Maxxillofacial Surgery (Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona, Spain) during the period 1996-2005, and posteriorly treated in different hospital centers in Barcelona. Results. Of the 22 patients diagnosed with oral cancer in our Service, the present study finally analyzed the 12 subjects who reported for the dental controls. As regards the remaining 10 patients, 5 had…

Recurrence of Acute Gallstone Pancreatitis and Relationship with Cholecystectomy or Endoscopic Sphincterotomy

2004

To determine the prevalence of recurrence of gallstone pancreatitis, its clinical features, and the presence of prognostic factors of recurrence. From January 1, 2000 to August 31, 2003, 233 patients admitted with acute gallstone pancreatitis (AGP) were prospectively studied. Patients were divided into two groups: recurrent and nonrecurrent group. Clinical, analytical, radiological, prognostic parameters, and severity (Atlanta criteria) were assessed, along with the performance of cholecystectomy or endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES). Clinical features of recurrence were analyzed. Univariate (chi(2), Student's t-test) and multivariate tests were performed. Statistical significance was assumed if…

Survey on Current Postnatal Surgical Management of Myelomeningocele in Germany.

2016

Background and Study Aims  Although postnatal surgery can be regarded as the standard of care for open myelomeningocele (MMC), there is no uniform treatment for this condition in Germany. This study assessed the current situation regarding the management of open MMC, a first and essential step toward the development of standards of practice. Patients and Methods  In the second half of 2009, we had sent standardized questionnaires to 139 neurosurgery departments and 73 pediatric surgery departments (number of returned questionnaires: 98 and 62, respectively) to identify the principles of MMC management. Newborns with open MMC are treated in 57 of the neurosurgery departments and in 18 of the…

Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Epidemiology of Knee and Shoulder Arthroscopy

2021

The purpose of our study was to comprehensively assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on knee and shoulder arthroscopy performed in an orthopedic department of a university hospital in Poland. This study compared the data on all shoulder and knee arthroscopy procedures performed in two different periods: The period of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland (from March 4, 2020, to October 15, 2020) and the corresponding period prior to the pandemic (March 4, 2019, to October 15, 2019). The study evaluated epidemiological data, demographic data, and hospital stay duration. The total number of arthroscopy procedures conducted in the evaluated period in 2020 was approximately 8.6% higher than th…
