Basis for a general theory of organizations

2011

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the conceptual basis shared by different theories, regardless of the unit of analysis they specifically adopt. The different ontological choice (or different segment of reality studied by each theory) does not hinder conceptual common ground for a good number of organisational theories.Design/methodology/approach – The paper highlights the importance of hierarchical, social and institutional relations and of the technological, cognitive, social and institutional contents. It looks at the common conceptual contents of the two main theories examined, and those of a wide set of other theories addressed here. Both of the theories examined are i…

Le siège de l'arbitrage international

2021

In international matters, the arbitral tribunal has no choice but to settle in the territory of a State in order to render its award. The choice of this "host State" would then determine the seat of international arbitration. But what choice do we make? How? By whom ? What to do in case of uncertainty of this choice? What effects will this determination then have in creating the tribunal, in rendering and enforcing its award, or in choosing the applicable laws? There is no single answer to these simple questions. Indeed, international arbitration law attaches varying importance to the notion of seat, in the sense that it will depend primarily on one's vision of the place and source of arbit…

Materialisme et linguistique chez Leopardi

1982

SUMMARYIn several of his letters Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), much better known as a poet and a man of letters than as a linguist, says that he is writing a book on the theory and history of language. Its title should have been Paralelo delle cinque lingue. As it happens, he did not write the book, but left a considerable number of notes in his intellectual diary, the Zibaldone, which he kept from 1817 to 1832. The paper investigates the relationship between Leopardi's linguistic theory and his materialistic philosophy. Leopardi, who was acquainted with the theories of Locke, Condillac, and Destutt de Tracy, envisaged the formation of words as an inseparable part of the formation of ideas …

On the italian debate concerning “Economia Aziendale”. The recent discovery of a manuscript by Emilio Ravenna (1930)

2016

The paper relies upon the recent discovery of the textbook of Accounting adopted in Palermo’s High Business School (the ‘ancestor’ of the Faculty of ‘Economics & Business’, founded after in 1936), just in its first years of opening (academic year 1930-31). It is a printed manuscript. This book was written by the local professor of Accounting, Emilio Ravenna, who operated in Sicily between the last decades of XIX century and the firstones of XX one, commonly considered (Guzzo, 2003) an intermediate scholar between the ‘Venetian’ (Besta) and ‘Tuscan’ (Cerboni) Italian Schools, adhering to the former for the accounting method and to the latter for the general theory of administrative funct…

Analytic gradients for the state-specific multireference coupled cluster singles and doubles model.

2009

The general theory of analytic energy gradients is presented for the state-specific multireference coupled cluster method introduced by Mukherjee and co-workers [Mol. Phys. 94, 157 (1998)], together with an implementation within the singles and doubles approximation, restricted to two closed-shell determinants and Hartree-Fock orbitals. Expressions for the energy gradient are derived based on a Lagrangian formalism and cast in a density-matrix notation suitable for implementation in standard quantum-chemical program packages. In the present implementation, we exploit a decomposition of the multireference coupled cluster gradient expressions, i.e., lambda equations and the corresponding dens…

Effective kink-kink interaction in a one-dimensional model mediated by phonon exchange

1994

The general 1D double-well model with anharmonic interaction is considered in the displacive limit. Expansion of the Hamiltonian around a multikink state results in a phonon-kink Hamiltonian. It is shown that at rather low temperatures and short wave lengths the phonon-kink interaction can be treated in Born approximation, leading to a decomposition of the multikink-phonon Hamiltionian. Elimination of the phonons results in an effective potential for the kink-kink interaction, which corresponds to the one-dimensional analog of the RKKY interaction. This long-range interaction is inherent only for models with anharmonic on-site potentials and not in case of a double-parabola model.

Bismut’s Way of the Malliavin Calculus for Non-Markovian Semi-groups: An Introduction

2019

We give a review of our recent works related to the Malliavin calculus of Bismut type for non-Markovian generators. Part IV is new and relates the Malliavin calculus and the general theory of elliptic pseudo-differential operators.

New contributions to heavy quark sum rules

2002

We analyse new contributions to the theoretical input in heavy quark sum rules and we show that the general theory of singularities of perturbation theory amplitudes yields the method to handle these specific features. In particular we study the inclusion of heavy quark radiation by light quarks at O(alpha_s^2) and non-symmetric correlators at O(alpha_s^3). Closely related, we also propose a solution to the construction of moments of the spectral densities at O(alpha_s^3) where the presence of massless contributions invalidates the standard approach. We circumvent this problem through a new definition of the moments, providing an infrared safe and consistent procedure.

A review of the general theory of thermoelastic stress analysis

2003

Thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) is now a well-known experimental technique providing information on the surface stress field in structures. Many studies have assessed the potential of the technique for a number of applications and some useful and detailed reviews of these investigations are available, focusing mainly on the experimental aspects related to the measurement of the thermoelastic signal. In this work, instead, a complete and detailed insight into the origins of the various forms of the equations describing the thermoelastic effect is given with reference to the concepts of the thermodynamic theory of a continuum. A discussion on the theory leading to the thermoelastic effec…

Filament sets and homogeneous continua

2007

Abstract New tools are introduced for the study of homogeneous continua. The subcontinua of a given continuum are classified into three types: filament , non-filament , and ample , with ample being a subcategory of non-filament. The richness of the collection of ample subcontinua of a homogeneous continuum reflects where the space lies in the gradation from being locally connected at one extreme to indecomposable at another. Applications are given to the general theory of homogeneous continua and their hyperspaces.
