Pulsed Electric Field: Fundamentals and Effects on the Structural and Techno-Functional Properties of Dairy and Plant Proteins
2022
Dairy and plant-based proteins are widely utilized in various food applications. Several techniques have been employed to improve the techno-functional properties of these proteins. Among them, pulsed electric field (PEF) technology has recently attracted considerable attention as a green technology to enhance the functional properties of food proteins. In this review, we briefly explain the fundamentals of PEF devices, their components, and pulse generation and discuss the impacts of PEF treatment on the structure of dairy and plant proteins. In addition, we cover the PEF-induced changes in the techno-functional properties of proteins (including solubility, gelling, emulsifying, and foamin…
Nuovi diritti umani e nuovi soggetti: i diritti delle generazioni future
The thesis deals with the subjects of rights of future generations through both philosophical and legal perspective. The Introduction considers the phenomenon of new subjects in legal theory and, more widely, the outbreak of new human rights related to the technological development. The First Chapter faces the problem of the definition of “future generations” and identifies three different approaches. The first one, the “Remotist” approach, defines “future generations” just as the future humankind extremely distant from the present time. The second, the “Proximist” approach, looks at “future generations” as a concept involving exclusively our direct descendants. The third one, the “Indeterm…

Nikos Gatsos, poet of the generation of the thirties known for his main work, Amorgòs, and for the many songs composed throughout his life, dedicated much time and energy to the translation of theatrical texts from English, French and Spanish, achieving effective results both linguistically and dramaturgically.
Epigenetic modifiers are necessary but not sufficient for reprogramming non-myelinating cells into myelin gene-expressing cells.
2010
Background Modifications on specific histone residues and DNA methylation play an essential role in lineage choice and cellular reprogramming. We have previously shown that histone modifications or combinatorial codes of transcription factors (TFs) are critical for the differentiation of multipotential progenitors into myelinating oligodendrocytes. In this study we asked whether combining global manipulation of DNA methylation and histone acetylation together with the expression of oligodendrocyte- specific TFs, was sufficient to switch the identity of fibroblasts into myelin gene-expressing cells. Methodology/Principal Findings Transfection of six oligodendrocyte-specific TFs (Olig1, Olig2…
Nitric Oxide/Cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate Signaling via Guanylyl Cyclase Isoform 1 Mediates Early Changes in Synaptic Transmission and Brain Edema …
2021
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often induces structural damage, disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), neurodegeneration, and dysfunctions of surviving neuronal networks. Nitric oxide (NO) signaling has been suggested to affect brain functions after TBI. The NO exhibits most of its biological effects by activation of the primary targets-guanylyl cyclases (NO-GCs), which exists in two isoforms (NO-GC1 and NO-GC2), and the subsequently produced cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). However, the specific function of the NO-NO-GCs-cGMP pathway in the context of brain injury is not fully understood. To investigate the specific role of the isoform NO-GC1 early after brain injuries, we perfor…
Comparative analysis of zebrafish nos2a and nos2b genes
2008
Abstract Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) produces nitric oxide (NO) from arginine. Three NOS isoforms have been identified in mammals, namely a neuronal (NOS1), an inducible (NOS2) and an endothelial (NOS3) enzyme. In zebrafish genome, one nos1 gene and two nos2 genes (nos2a and nos2b) were observed. We cloned zebrafish nos2a cDNA and compared nos2a and nos2b sequences, expression and inducibility. When analyzed by reverse transcription-PCR, the expression of nos2a remained very low during initial development, then increased at 96 hpf, while nos2b was expressed from 6 hpf and subsequently remained stable. Expression of nos2a is detected in the head, eye and gut regions by WISH experiments perfo…
Nitric Oxide: Biological Synthesis and Functions
2012
The pluripotent gaseous messenger molecule nitric oxide (NO) controls vital functions such as neurotransmission or vascular tone (via activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase), gene transcription, mRNA translation (via iron-responsive elements), and post-translational modifications of proteins (via ADP-ribosylation). In higher concentrations, NO is capable of destroying parasites and tumor cells by inhibiting iron-containing enzymes or directly interacting with the DNA of these cells. In view of this multitude of functions of NO, it is important to understand the mechanisms by which cells accomplish and regulate the production of this molecule. In mammals, three isozymes of NO synthase (NOS; …
Usher syndrome and Leber congenital amaurosis are molecularly linked via a novel isoform of the centrosomal ninein-like protein.
2009
Contains fulltext : 80984.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Usher syndrome (USH) and Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) are autosomal recessive disorders resulting in syndromic and non-syndromic forms of blindness. In order to gain insight into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying retinal degeneration, we searched for interacting proteins of USH2A isoform B (USH2A(isoB)) and the LCA5-encoded protein lebercilin. We identified a novel isoform of the centrosomal ninein-like protein, hereby named Nlp isoform B (Nlp(isoB)), as a common interactor. Although we identified the capacity of this protein to bind calcium with one of its three EF-hand domains, the interacton with USH2A(isoB) did …
Langmuir-Blodgett films of indandione-1,3 pyridinium betaine. III: Linear dichroism and non-linear optical properties
1996
Linear dichroism and second-harmonic generation (SHG) have been measured in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers of Z-type structure of amphiphilic indandione-1,3 pyridinium betaine (IPB) with an aliphatic tail containing 17 carbon atoms (C171PB). The dichr
