Coupled dynamics in gluon mass generation and the impact of the three-gluon vertex

2018

We present a detailed study of the subtle interplay transpiring at the level of two integral equations that are instrumental for the dynamical generation of a gluon mass in pure Yang-Mills theories. The main novelty is the joint treatment of the Schwinger-Dyson equation governing the infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator and of the integral equation that controls the formation of massless bound-state excitations, whose inclusion is instrumental for obtaining massive solutions from the former equation. The self-consistency of the entire approach imposes the requirement of using a single value for the gauge coupling entering in the two key equations; its fulfillment depends crucially on …

Gluon mass generation without seagull divergences

2009

Dynamical gluon mass generation has been traditionally plagued with seagull divergences, and all regularization procedures proposed over the years yield finite but scheme-dependent gluon masses. In this work we show how such divergences can be eliminated completely by virtue of a characteristic identity, valid in dimensional regularization. The ability to trigger the aforementioned identity hinges crucially on the particular Ansatz employed for the three-gluon vertex entering into the Schwinger-Dyson equation governing the gluon propagator. The use of the appropriate three-gluon vertex brings about an additional advantage: one obtains two separate (but coupled) integral equations, one for t…

Gluon mass generation in the PT-BFM scheme

2006

In this article we study the general structure and special properties of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the gluon propagator constructed with the pinch technique, together with the question of how to obtain infrared finite solutions, associated with the generation of an effective gluon mass. Exploiting the known all-order correspondence between the pinch technique and the background field method, we demonstrate that, contrary to the standard formulation, the non-perturbative gluon self-energy is transverse order-by-order in the dressed loop expansion, and separately for gluonic and ghost contributions. We next present a comprehensive review of several subtle issues relevant to the search …

Unified description of seagull cancellations and infrared finiteness of gluon propagators

2016

We present a generalized theoretical framework for dealing with the important issue of dynamical mass generation in Yang-Mills theories, and, in particular, with the infrared finiteness of the gluon propagators, observed in a multitude of recent lattice simulations. Our analysis is manifestly gauge-invariant, in the sense that it preserves the transversality of the gluon self-energy, and gauge-independent, given that the conclusions do not depend on the choice of the gauge-fixing parameter within the linear covariant gauges. The central construction relies crucially on the subtle interplay between the Abelian Ward identities satisfied by the nonperturbative vertices and a special integral i…

Neutrino oscillations and flavor theories

2020

I discuss neutrino mixing ansatze, such as the generalized Tri-bimaximal and bi-large mixing patterns, and their utility in describing the oscillation data. Unitarity tests and probes of the absolute neutrino mass scale are briefly discussed. A short overview of neutrino mass generation is given. I discuss an orbifold approach to the flavor problem and the resulting implications, e.g. the golden quark-lepton mass relation, neutrinoless double beta decay and neutrino oscillation predictions.

Quantum walk on a cylinder

2016

We consider the 2D alternate quantum walk on a cylinder. We concentrate on the study of the motion along the open dimension, in the spirit of looking at the closed coordinate as a small or "hidden" extra dimension. If one starts from localized initial conditions on the lattice, the dynamics of the quantum walk that is obtained after tracing out the small dimension shows the contribution of several components, which can be understood from the study of the dispersion relations for this problem. In fact, these components originate from the contribution of the possible values of the quasi-momentum in the closed dimension. In the continuous space-time limit, the different components manifest as …

Measurement of CP asymmetry in D 0 → K - K + and D 0 → π - πdecays

2014

Time-integrated $CP$ asymmetries in $D^0$ decays to the final states $K^- K^+$ and $\pi^- \pi^+$ are measured using proton-proton collisions corresponding to $3\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at centre-of-mass energies of $7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ and $8\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The $D^0$ mesons are produced in semileptonic $b$-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial flavour of the charm meson. The difference in $CP$ asymmetries between the two final states is measured to be \begin{align} \Delta A_{CP} = A_{CP}(K^-K^+)-A_{CP}(\pi^-\pi^+) = (+0.14 \pm 0.16\mathrm{\,(stat)} \pm 0.08\mathrm{\,(syst)})\% \ . \nonu…

L’high Line Elevated Parkway : metamorfosi di un’infrastruttura in riconversione

2013

The reuse of the abandoned High Line Elevated Parkway, claimed and partnered by the association Friends of the High Line, is based on certain features of the former, obsolete, viaduct which runs trough the urban tissue nearly 30 feet in the air. Inspired by the unexpected beauty of the lush wilderness that has converted the High Line’s tracks into a spontaneous greenway since 1980s, the design team has been led by James Corner – Field Operation, with Diller & Scofi dio + Renfro and Piet Oudolf. Sublimating the old traces of over 20 years of abandon, the project is founded on a holistic approach that embodies the new dominant paradigm marked by the growing importance of recycling, slowness a…

High-order harmonic generation via bound-bound transitions in elliptically polarized laser field

2015

We use a 5-level system to investigate the HHG spectrum emitted by an atom driven by a linearly or elliptically polarized laser field. For this model the Schrodinger equation is numerically solved and we study the dipendence of the spectra, harmonic intensity and polarization of emitted radiation on the laser field ellipticity. Studying the intensity of the emitted radiation we find that un alsoder high laser ellipticity the harmonic emission is greatly reduced; the analysis of results shows that the harmonic intensity and the emitted radiation depend on the laser ellipticity.
