PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY WITH VERTEPORFIN FOR CHOROIDAL NEOVASCULARIZATION ASSOCIATED WITH RETINAL PIGMENT EPITHELIAL DETACHMENT IN AGE-RELATED MACULAR D…
2007
Abstract PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin for choroidal neovascularization (CNV) associated with retinal pigment epithelium detachment (PED) in age-related macular degeneration. METHODS: Thirty eyes of 26 patients with CNV and PED were treated with PDT. The eyes were divided in two groups based on CNV location in relation to PED; group 1 included 13 eyes with CNV within PED, and group 2 included 17 eyes with CNV at the edge of PED. The median follow-up was 16 months. RESULTS: Patients received a mean +/- SD of 2.83 +/- 1.26 treatments (range, 1-6 treatments). In the whole cohort, the mean preoperative visual acuity changed from 20/144 (0.86…
Clinical Outcome and Subjective Quality of Life after Photodynamic Therapy in Patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration
2005
PURPOSE. Whereas the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in preventing the progression of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is established, its effect on quality of life is under discussion. METHODS. All patientswho underwent PDT during 2000 and 2001 at the University Eye Hospital of Mainz were interviewed using a standardized 82-item questionnaire on quality of life and patient satisfaction in ophthalmologic patients. Information was assessed in terms of 82 questions; global scores ranging from 1.0 (optimum self-estimated quality of life) to 4.0 (worst) were derived. Cataract patients' scores were used to characterize the ARMD patients' subjective outcome; the latter were then rel…
Back pain after photodynamic therapy with verteporfin.
2005
Purpose To report the incidence of back pain after photodynamic therapy, which suggests methods for prevention that are related to its pathogenesis. Design Retrospective case series. Methods We retrospectively observed 548 patients who had undergone photodynamic therapy with verteporfin. Results Of 548 patients at the first treatment, 14 patients (2.6%) experienced pain during the infusion. Eleven patients were being treated for age-related macular degeneration; their mean age was 81 years, which significantly differed from the mean age of the overall age-related macular degeneration group ( P = .003). The pain was mild in eight patients, moderate in four patients, and severe in two patient…
Plasma sublimation for the treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum
2020
Introduction Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is a common xanthomatous lesion of the eyelid and periorbital skin. Several methods of treatment have been reported in the literature, each having its own indications and risks. We present a new treatment method for removing XP using a plasma exeresis device (Plexr®, GMV, Italy). Methods Fifteen patients with a total of 27 treated XPs were assessed and clinically identified by the treating dermatologist. Patients were photographed and assessed by a dermatologist prior to and immediately after treatment. A patient survey was conducted 12 months after the procedure, which assessed the outcome of the procedure (redness, pigmentation disorders, and scar…
Computed Tomography Findings Associated with Clinical Outcome After Dynamic Posterior Stabilization of the Lumbar Spine.
2016
Objective To evaluate whether preoperative multirow detector computed tomography (MDCT) findings were associated with clinical outcome 24 months after dynamic stabilization for painful degenerative lumbar spine disease. Methods Preoperative MDCT examinations of 63 patients (66 ± 11.7 years; 60% women) treated with a dynamic screw rod system for painful degenerative segmental instability with/without spinal stenosis were assessed for quantitative and qualitative parameters defining degenerative changes of the thoracolumbar spine, including grades of disc herniation, degenerative spondylolisthesis, vertebral body sclerosis, cross-sectional area of the spinal canal at disc level, intervertebra…
Insulin resistance as common molecular denominator linking obesity to Alzheimer’s disease
2015
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an aging-related multi-factorial disorder to which metabolic factors contribute at what has canonically been considered a centrally mediated process. Although the exact underlying mechanisms are still unknown, obesity is recognized as a risk factor for AD and the condition of insulin resistance seems to be the link between the two pathologies. Using mice with high fat diet (HFD) obesity we dissected the molecular mechanisms shared by the two disorders. Brains of HFD fed mice showed elevated levels of APP and Aβ 40 /Aβ 42 together with BACE, GSK3β and Tau proteins involved in APP processing and Aβ accumulation. Immunofluorescence, Thioflavin T staining experiments…
Collagen metabolism of mouse skeletal muscle during the repair of exercise injuries.
1986
The activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and beta-glucuronidase, the concentration of hydroxyproline as well as reticulin and collagen type III, IV and V stainings were followed in skeletal muscle during a 20-day period after a 9-h treadmill running in untrained and trained male mice, aged 4-6 months. The prolonged 9-h running of untrained mice temporarily increased prolyl 4-hydroxylase activity 2, 5 and 10 days after exercise, more prominently in the red than in the white part of quadriceps femoris-muscle, and in analogical manner as beta-glucuronidase activity in tibialis anterior-muscle. Twenty days after exercise these enzymatic activities were back to the control level. The hydroxyprolin…
Spatiotemporal distribution of gp130 cytokines and their receptors after status epilepticus: comparison with neuronal degeneration and microglial act…
2003
Although numerous studies have demonstrated the neurotrophic capacity of gp130 cytokines, it remains unclear whether endogenously expressed cytokines actually function in a direct neuromodulatory manner. Therefore, using the lithium-pilocarpine status epilepticus model, we performed a detailed in situ hybridization time-course study of five gp130 cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, leukemia inhibitory factor [LIF], IL-11, oncostatin-m [OSM], and ciliary neurotrophic factor), gp130, and the receptors of the cytokines we found to be induced (IL-6 receptor [IL-6R], LIF receptor [LIF-R], and IL-11 receptor [IL-11R]). Additionally, to further understand the regulation of these cytokines, we compared …
Serum concentrations of hydroxybupropion for dose optimization of depressed patients treated with bupropion.
2014
Background Bupropion is a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor approved for the treatment of depression and smoking cessation. According to the recently published reviews, it is a candidate for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to improve therapeutic outcomes and reduce risks of intolerability or intoxication. In practice, however, the use of TDM is limited due to the chemical instability of bupropion. This investigation sought to determine if the major, active, and chemically stable metabolite 4-hydroxybupropion is a suitable measure to guide antidepressant drug therapy with bupropion. Methods 4-Hydroxybupropion serum levels were measured using a newly developed and validated hig…
Surgical management of subfoveal choroidal neovascular membranes in age-related macular degeneration by macular relocation: experiences of an early-s…
2009
The MARAN (Macular Relocation in Age-related Neovascular disease) trial was planned to assess the effectiveness of full macular relocation (MR) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).Randomised, prospective, controlled clinical trial.Patients suffering from visual loss because of AMD were randomised to either surgery or a control group receiving standard treatment (observation or photodynamic therapy (PDT)). The primary end point was the change of visual acuity (VA) (ETDRS) 52 weeks after randomisation compared with initial VA, and secondary end points included reading performance, contrast sensitivity, stability of fixation, eye-specific quality of life, and th…
