Regeneration of total RNA purification silica-based columns
2010
Silica-based columns are largely used in RNA purification, allowing fast extractions and good yields of high quality nucleic acid, but their major limitation is the high cost. The reuse of such columns, although desirable, is not recommended because of residual amounts of material from the previous sample trapped in the column matrix, which might be released during further purification. Thus, recycling does need previous complete removal of any detectable RNA trace, but to date no protocol which allows decontamination and reuse is available. We report a very rapid decontamination procedure, based on treatment with warm alkaline solution containing Triton X-100, which ensures no RNA carry-ove…
Numerical study of an optical regenerator exploiting self-phase modulation and spectral offset filtering at 40 Gbit/s
2008
Topic: Nonlinear optics; International audience; In this work, we numerically investigate the performances of optical regenerators based on self-phase modulation and spectral offset filtering at 40 Gbit/s. We outline the different effects affecting the device performances and explain the choice of the optimal working power. The impact of the regenerator on the output signal is also analysed through a statistical approach. Both single- and double-stage configurations are investigated.
Direct determination of polymerised triacylglycerides in deep-frying vegetable oil by near infrared spectroscopy using Partial Least Squares regressi…
2012
Abstract A green method for the determination of polymerised triacylglyceride (PTG) in deep-frying vegetable oils of different botanic origin has been developed employing near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression. Four different types of oil were heated during several hours, with and without the addition of foodstuff. NIR transmission spectra were obtained directly from sample aliquots stored in glass vials, thus avoiding the consumption of solvents and minimising waste generation. Variables employed for building the PLS models were selected applying interval PLS (iPLS) as well as Uninformative Variable Elimination-PLS (UVE-PLS). A global PLS model using sp…
Fluvoxamine but not sertraline inhibits the metabolism of olanzapine: evidence from a therapeutic drug monitoring service.
2001
Therapeutic drug monitoring data of the new atypical neuroleptic drug olanzapine were used to study interactions with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors fluvoxamine and sertraline. The distribution of the ratio of concentration/daily dose (C/D; ng/mL per mg/d) of olanzapine was compared in three groups: patients treated with olanzapine (n = 134), patients treated with olanzapine plus fluvoxamine (n = 10) concomitantly, and patients treated with olanzapine plus sertraline (n = 21) concomitantly. No significant difference was seen between the olanzapine and the olanzapine plus sertraline groups. Patients receiving fluvoxamine in addition to olanzapine had C/D ratios that were in the …
Acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human olfactory functioning.
2004
Background Animal experiments indicate that 1,1,1-trichloroethane can cause degeneration of the olfactory epithelium. The effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human odor perception still have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to learn more about acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Methods Twelve healthy, nonsmoking students were exposed to 200 and 20 ppm (control) 1,1,1-trichloroethane in an exposure chamber for 4 hours according to a crossover design. Olfactory functioning was investigated with the Sniffin’ Sticks. The test includes the determination of the detection threshold for n-butanol and an odor identification test. Results After 1 hour of exposure to 200 ppm 1,1,…
Clinical application of adult olfactory bulb ensheathing glia for nervous system repair
2011
Abstract The ability of adult olfactory bulb ensheathing glia (OB-OEG) to promote histological and functional neural repair has been broadly documented. Pre-clinical studies show that beneficial effects of adult OB-OEG are repeatable in the same type of spinal cord injury initially tested, in other spinal cord and CNS injury models, in different species and after the administration of these cells in different forms (either alone or in combination with other cells, drugs, products or devices). These studies demonstrate the reproducibility, robustness, fundamental nature and relevance of the findings. Therefore, the use of adult OB-OEG for spinal cord injury repair meets the scientific criter…
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
A Column Generation Approach to Scheduling of Periodic Tasks
2011
We present an algorithm based on column generation for a real time scheduling problem, in which all tasks appear regularly after a given period. Furthermore, the tasks exchange messages, which have to be transferred over a bus, if the tasks involved are executed on different ECUs. Experiments show that for large instances our preliminary implementation is faster than the previous approach based on an integer linear programming formulation using a state-of-the-art solver.
Scheduling of Real-Time Networks with a Column Generation Approach
2013
We present an algorithm based on column generation for the real-time scheduling problem of allocating periodic tasks to electronic control units in multiple subsystems connected by a global bus. The allocation has to ensure that tasks can be scheduled, and messages between tasks in different subsystems can be transmitted over the global bus and meet their deadlines. Also tasks and messages occurring in a task chain must be scheduled in a way such that the sequence of execution meets their end-to-end deadline. We show that our approach computes the optimal allocation in our model and due to the column generation approach early provides lower bounds on the optimal value.
Ataxin-1 and ataxin-2 intermediate-length PolyQ expansions in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
2012
ABSTRACT Objective: Recent evidence suggests that intermediate-length polyglutamine (PolyQ) expansions in the ataxin-2 ( ATXN-2 ) gene are a risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This work was undertaken with the aim to investigate the frequency of ataxin-1 ( ATXN-1 ) and ATXN-2 PolyQ expansions in a cohort of patients with sporadic ALS (sALS) and patients with familial ALS (fALS) from southern Italy. Methods: We assessed the PolyQ lengths of ATXN-1 and ATXN-2 in 405 patients with sALS, 13 patients with fALS, and 296 unrelated controls without history of neurodegenerative disorders. Results: We found significantly higher intermediate PolyQ expansions ≥32 for ATXN-1 alleles an…
