FINITE ELEMENT RESOLUTION OF CONVECTION-DIFFUSION EQUATIONS WITH INTERIOR AND BOUNDARY LAYERS
1996
We present a new algorithm for the resolution of both interior and boundary layers present in the convection-diffusion equation in laminar regimes, based on the formulation of a family of polynomial-exponential elements. We have carried out an adaptation of the standard variational methods (finite element method and spectral element method), obtaining an algorithm which supplies non-oscillatory and accurate solutions. The algorithm consists of generating a coupled grid of polynomial standard elements and polynomial-exponential elements. The latter are able to represent the high gradients of the solution, while the standard elements represent the solution in the areas of smooth variation.
Blood absorption capacity of different xenograft bone substitutes. An in-vitro study
2019
Background Commercially available xenograft blocks, claim to have adequate characteristics to interact with biological media and thus permitting biological fluid absorption. The objective of this in vitro study was to compare the blood absorption capacity of four different xenograft block materials of different composition of collagen and porosity. Material and Methods Four brands of xenograft block materials were used (NuOss®, Bio-Oss®, Osteobiol® and Smartbone®). Five samples of each brand were analyzed, making a total of 20 tests. Human blood was used as the absorption liquid for the present experiment. The time period, in which the block remains in contact with the blood, was registered…
From the vestiges port at the port hybrid: the experimental field of the waterfront 2.0
2012
A Thousand and One Recipes with Porto’s Bacalhau
2022
The port of Porto in Portugal (nomen est omen – dest…
Computational Analysis of Clinical and Molecular Markers and New Theranostic Possibilities in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma
2020
Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a paramount cause of irreversible visual disability worldwide. We focus on identifying clinical and molecular facts that may help elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms of the disease. By using ophthalmological approaches (biomicroscopy, ocular fundus, optical coherence tomography, and perimetry) and experimental tests (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and Western blot/immunoblotting) directed to evaluate the oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and neurodegeneration processes, we gather information to build a network of data to perform a computational bioinformatics analysis. Our results sho…
A new method to isolate microglia from adult mice and culture them for an extended period of time
2009
As the major immuno-competent cells of the brain, microglia are highly implicated in neuro-protection as well as in neurodegeneration. Therefore, they are of key interest for research on numerous CNS diseases. Currently, to model inflammation in the brain, microglial cell lines or primary microglia prepared from embryonic or neo-natal rodents are widely used. However, these in vitro microglial models are not suitable for research in the field of neuro-degenerative diseases where aging is a crucial parameter. Only a few in vitro studies on aged microglia have been published so far, most of which use ex vivo microglia which cannot be kept in culture for prolonged periods of time. In the prese…
Fuel cells for household appliances: Experimental test of power management algorithms
2013
In this paper, fuel cell - based hybrid power supplies for household appliances are addressed. The profile of residential power consumption is evaluated during working, non-working days in both summer and winter periods. The worst-case load power demand is therefore highlighted. A 5kW Nuvera PowerFlow proton exchange membrane fuel cell for household appliances is tested. On the basis of the characterization of the fuel cell stack under test, stand-alone and fuel cell - battery active hybrid power supply architectures are both considered. Experimental validation of three power management algorithms is proposed in terms of hydrogen consumption, cost and energy saving. Power management algorit…
A distributed minimum losses optimal power flow for islanded microgrids
2017
Abstract In this work, the minimum losses optimal power dispatch problem for islanded microgrids with distributed energy resources (DER) is solved by means of a distributed heuristic approach. Optimal power management is performed almost in real time, with a predefined schedule, i.e. every 5 min, and the solution is applied to generators when the current operating solution violates voltage or current constraints or when the current configuration produces too large power losses. The operating point of both inverter-interfaced generation units as well as rotating production systems can be modified simply using local information. The latter are voltage measurements and power injections or load…
Power management of grid-connected photovoltaic inverter with storage battery
2011
With increased penetration of PV generation in the power grid, it becomes necessary to control the PV generation similar to the conventional power sources. Grid-connected PV systems equipped with storage batteries are capable of active power control. PV power generation can be either fed into the grid or stored in the battery. This paper presents a deterministic power management algorithm that uses closed-form approximations derived from analytical loss models. It can be configured to maximize the efficiency or the revenue in a liberalized electricity market. The battery controller emulates an optimum load-line in which the PV power is autonomously shared between the battery and the feed-in…
Hydrogen back-up power system with photovoltaic direct energy transfer regulation and interleaved boost for space applicattions
2012
This work details a power conditioning unit for photovoltaic/hydrogen based energy systems in space applications. The power conversion techniques applied are similar to the ones used on photovoltaic/battery space power systems. A direct energy transfer photovoltaic regulator is devised for feeding two outputs; the first output corresponds to the main unregulated battery bus and the second output sets a power path to feed an electrolyser. A modular fuel cell converter completes the system and operates when photovoltaic energy is not available or load demand exceeds the generated photovoltaic power, providing electrical power from a fuel cell. An ancillary battery, located in the main bus, di…
