From limit to centrality. Regeneration of the Genoa's port area through architectural and urban design

2012

This survey’s core is the case study of the regeneration of the port area and of the urban waterfront of the city of Genoa, as an emblematic example where the architectural and urban design plays an important role, oriented to the transformation of the port area and to the modification of the relationship that exists between the harbour and the city. In particular this will deepen the possibility, to reverse the condition of limit that characterizes the port area into a new centrality, through the design, passing by intermediate steps that redefine the modalities of access and of connection between city and port, breaking the condition of isolation that ports usually present. As a matter of…

Resilient cities and sustainable urban mobility in Sicily

2018

The global crisis that in recent years has been investing our planet at different levels - social, economic, political, cultural, environmental - has determined a constant change in the quality of life in the cities. Cities, unfortunately, increasingly vulnerable characterized by insecurity, uncertainty, unpredictability due to mistakes made in the past. This is why, today, urban planning is called to satisfy the new needs of the community through a planning that must be adapted to change. In this scenario, urban centers - in order to ensure high levels of quality of life and responsible management of territorial resources - they must re-examine their governance, their strategies for expans…

A numerical meshless particle method in solving the magnetoencephalography forward problem

2012

In this paper, a numerical meshless particle method is presented in order to solve the magnetoencephalography forward problem for analyzing the complex activation patterns in the human brain. The forward problem is devoted to compute the scalp potential and magnetic field distribution generated by a set of current sources representing the neural activity, and in this paper, it has been approached by means of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method suitably handled. The Poisson equation generated by the quasi-stationary Maxwell's curl equations, by assuming Neumann boundary conditions has been considered, and the current sources have been simulated by current dipoles. The adopted meshless…

Inducible and reversible inhibition of miRNA-mediated gene repression in vivo

2021

Although virtually all gene networks are predicted to be controlled by miRNAs, the contribution of this important layer of gene regulation to tissue homeostasis in adult animals remains unclear. Gain and loss of function experiments have provided key insights into the specific function of individual miRNAs, but effective genetic tools to study the functional consequences of global inhibition of miRNA activity in vivo are lacking. Here we report the generation and characterization of a genetically engineered mouse strain in which miRNA-mediated gene repression can be reversibly inhibited without affecting miRNA biogenesis or abundance. We demonstrate the usefulness of this strategy by invest…

Genomic response programs of Candida albicans following protoplasting and regeneration

2005

Transcription profiling of Candida albicans cells responding to the elimination of the wall (protoplasts) and posterior regeneration was explored. DNA microarrays were used to measure changes in the expression of 6039 genes, and the upregulated genes during regeneration at 28 degrees C were assigned to fourteen categories. A total of 407 genes were upregulated during the process, of which 144 reached a maximum after 1 h. MKC1, a gene encoding a member of the regulatory pathway involved in cell wall integrity was overexpressed. Time-dependent expression divided the genes into 40 clusters. Clusters 1-19 were highly expressed initially (time 0) and downregulated following incubation, whereas t…

Assessment of energy management technique for achieving the sustainable voltage level during grid outage of hydro generator interfaced DC Micro-Grid

2021

Abstract An appropriate energy management scheme is needed for the reliable and sustainable operation of DC microgrid. The energy management scheme of DC microgrid (MG) is mainly controlled by main energy resource of MG. Main energy resource needs to be dispatchable unit for forming the reference voltage within DC MG. In this work, a micro hydro generator (MHG) is considered as a dispatchable source for forming the sustainable voltage level of DC MG operating under the abnormal condition. In this work, the abnormality refers to the outage of solar PV due to intermittency during fluctuating load condition. But, due to mechanical time constant of MHG and rate of charging/discharging current l…

Performance assessment of institutional photovoltaic based energy system for operating as a micro-grid

2020

Abstract A building integrated photovoltaic (PV) system with energy storage within an institution may need appropriate coordination among distributed energy sources (DERs). It is required to have an appropriate energy management strategy to improve system performance as well as to operate it as a micro-grid during the grid outage condition. In this paper, TERI’s (India) Retreat Facility’s energy system has been used, and its performance with a distributed generator has been assessed with operational strategies for fulfilling the institutional load demand in coordination with the PV, grid and battery storage; and with possibility of operating it as a micro-grid during the grid outage period …

The influence of the stochastic features of the energy source on the design of an electromagnetic generator

2009

The purpose of this paper is to clarify in a general way how the unavoidable randomness of renewable energy sources influences the magnetic design of electric generator. A general model of electro magnetic generator based on the well known d-q axes analysis is given. The energy source is modelled as a stochastic variable and is included in the equations of the system. The equations are solved and, therefore, the energy output of the system is linked to the random characteristic of the energy source. As a result, the magnetic circuit and the parameters of the generator that maximize the energy extraction can be found and generally linked to the stochastic details of the source.

Grid interaction and environmental impact of a net zero energy building

2020

Abstract The concept of Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB), as a grid-connected building that generates as much energy as it uses over a given period, has been developing through policies and research agendas during the last decade as a contribution towards the decarbonization of the building sector. However, since the most applicable and widely used renewable energy supply options are non-programmable, the large-scale NZEBs diffusion into the existing power grids can seriously affect their stability having a relapse on operation costs and environmental impacts. In this context, the study aims at performing the design of the energy systems to be used in the case-study through a wide numbers of…
