Correcting for non-ignorable missingness in smoking trends
2015
Data missing not at random (MNAR) is a major challenge in survey sampling. We propose an approach based on registry data to deal with non-ignorable missingness in health examination surveys. The approach relies on follow-up data available from administrative registers several years after the survey. For illustration we use data on smoking prevalence in Finnish National FINRISK study conducted in 1972-1997. The data consist of measured survey information including missingness indicators, register-based background information and register-based time-to-disease survival data. The parameters of missingness mechanism are estimable with these data although the original survey data are MNAR. The u…
Spectrum emitted by a trapped electron
2007
We study the behaviour of a homonuclear molecule driven by an intense laser field. Newton's laws are used to describe the dynamics of nuclei while the quantal approach is reserved to the study of the electron. It is observed that the nuclei can oscillate or dissociate according to the degree of ionization of the molecule. In case of low ionization rate it is shown that great amount of information can be obtained by using the simplified approaches of fixed nuclei and of two-state approximation. Under suitable conditions the electron wave function spends a long time localized around one nucleus. The harmonic generation of the molecule is studied and seen to contain even harmonics.
Quantum Ring in a Magnetic Field: High Harmonic Generation and NOT Logic Gate
2020
The effect of a static magnetic field on the high harmonic generation (HHG) from a quantum ring driven by one laser polarized along the x-axis is studied. The spin polarization (Formula presented.) and the temporal emission of the harmonics are studied by varying the intensity of the magnetic field and it is shown how these results have a significant technological impact in computer technology; in fact a boolean algebra can be implemented by assigning 0 and 1 values to low and high pulse intensities of the emitted harmonics and logic gates like the NOT can be created.

Bulky, Dendronized Iridium Complexes and their Photoluminescence
2019
Solution-processed blue emitters are essential for low-cost organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) but still face challenges due to their poor color purity, low efficiency and limited operational stability. Herein, by extending the conjugation of ultraviolet-emissive, facial tris(diphenylbenzimidazolyl)iridium (Ir) (fac-(dpbic)3Ir), we introduce two new types of solution-processed emitters, i.e. triisopropylsilylethynyl(TIPSE)-substituted fac-(dpbic)3Ir (2) and fac-(dpbic)3Ir-based polyphenylene dendrimers D1 and D2. The emissions of Ir-complex 2 and the dendrimers were successfully pushed toward a pure and sky blue color, respectively, due to the dominant 3π–π* nature of their emissive exci…
A dish-stirling solar concentrator coupled to a seasonal thermal energy storage system in the southern mediterranean basin: A cogenerative layout hyp…
2020
Abstract In the future, renewable energy sources will increasingly represent an efficient energy source capable of meeting the demands of residential and industrial buildings avoiding the emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In this paper, a heat and electric power cogeneration plant implementing a field of dish-Stirling collectors, a seasonal geothermal storage and a system of water-to-water heat pumps is proposed for the first time. The cogeneration plant has been designed both to supply thermal energy to the heating system of Building 9 of the Department of Engineering in Palermo and to produce electricity. The operation of the plant has been tested by means of hourly-based…
A validated energy model of a solar dish-Stirling system considering the cleanliness of mirrors
2020
Solar systems based on the coupling of parabolic concentrating collectors and thermal engines (i.e. dish-Stirling systems) are among the most efficient generators of solar power currently available. This study focuses on the modelling of functioning data from a 32 kWe dish-Stirling solar plant installed at a facility test site on the University of Palermo campus, in Southern Italy. The proposed model, based on real monitored data, the energy balance of the collector and the partial load efficiency of the Stirling engine, can be used easily to simulate the annual energy production of such systems, making use of the solar radiation database, with the aim of encouraging a greater commercialisa…

Palermo: Living Labs for Urban Regeneration
2016
The case of Palermo is described in this chapter as an example of Human Smart City (HSC) approach transferred to an extremely weak urban context in Southern Italy. The case focuses on the processes boosted through the Territorial Living Lab established in the city to tackle the topic of citizen participation in the solution of the main city challenges. It was based on a model of incremental and adaptive process of interaction, within a co-creative ecosystem, with the aim of improving housing quality. The model was shared by the players involved in the social innovation process. It would not have been possible without the Living Lab approach and the innovative momentum of design thinking tra…
Inventare nuove città. L’area industriale dell’ex-Montedison sul fiume Platani
2018
The construction of the Montedison factory on the river Platani, built in 1957-60 to produce potassium sulfate, corresponds to the foundation of a real industrial city with para…
