Signalling molecules and growth factors for tissue engineering of cartilage-what can we learn from the growth plate?
2009
Modern tissue engineering concepts integrate cells, scaffolds, signalling molecules and growth factors. For the purposes of regenerative medicine, fetal development is of great interest because it is widely accepted that regeneration recapitulates in part developmental processes. In tissue engineering of cartilage the growth plate of the long bone represents an interesting, well-organized developmental structure with a spatial distribution of chondrocytes in different proliferation and differentiation stages, embedded in a scaffold of extracellular matrix components. The proliferation and differentiation of these chondrocytes is regulated by various hormonal and paracrine factors. Thus, mem…
Customized Titanium Lattice Structure in Three-Dimensional Alveolar Defect: An Initial Case Letter
2018
The aim of this initial case report was to provide a new protocol for the clinical application of a patient-specific titanium lattice structure (Yxoss CBR®, ReOSS, Filderstadt, Germany) for customized bone regeneration. To obtain a 3-dimensional reconstruction of a posterior mandible segment in a 61-year-old woman, a patient-specific titanium customized lattice structure was used. As graft material autogenous bone tissue mixed with xenogenic alloplastic material (Bio Oss®, Geistlich Pharma, Wolhusen, Switzerland) was obtained for reconstruction. After a healing period of 6 months, the titanium lattice structure was removed and implant placement (Camlog Screw Line, 3.8/11, Camlog, Wimsheim, …
Progress of the conceptual design of the European DEMO breeding blanket, tritium extraction and coolant purification systems
2020
Abstract In the frame of the EUROfusion consortium activities the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) and the Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) concepts are being developed as possible candidates to become driver Breeding Blanket (BB) for the EU DEMO, which aims at the tritium self-sufficiency and net electricity production. The two BB design options encompass water or helium as coolants and solid ceramic with beryllium/beryllides or PbLi as tritium breeder and neutron multipliers. The BB segments have evolved towards a more stable conceptual design taking into account multiple feasibility aspects and requirements imposed by interfacing systems. Possible solutions to improve shielding capabiliti…
Towards the new spectral-domain optical coherence tomography based classification of age-related macular degeneration
2012
Search for same-sign top-quark production and fourth-generation down-type quarks in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
2012
A search is presented for same-sign top-quark production and down-type heavy quarks of charge −1/3 in events with two isolated leptons (e or μ) that have the same electric charge, at least two jets and large missing transverse momentum. The data are selected from pp collisions at √s=7TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb−1. The observed data are consistent with expectations from Standard Model processes. Upper limits are set at 95 % confidence level on the cross section of new sources of same-sign top-quark pair production of 1.4-2.0 pb depending on the assumed mediator mass. Upper limits are also set on the pair-production cross-section fo…
Review and comparison of experimental techniques used for determination of thin film electro-optic coefficients
2015
The results of electro-optic coefficient measurements performed with three commonly applied techniques used to assess electro-optic coefficients: the Mach–Zehnder, the Teng–Man, and the attenuated total reflectance technique are reported. It is shown that the signal obtained by the Mach–Zehnder and Teng–Man techniques is strongly influenced by the multiple internal reflection and piezo- and electrostrictive thickness change effects, which in our opinion have not been addressed sufficiently in the literature. A novel approach based on using Abeles matrix formalism is implemented for the retrieval of electro-optic coefficients from experimental data. The measurement results, errors, and compa…
A Models-to-Program Information Systems Engineering Method
2021
The Model-Driven Development paradigm aims to represent all the information system features through models. Conceptual-Model Programming offers a similar approach, but with a focus on automatic code generation. Both approaches consider modeling and traceability of different abstraction levels, where each level can be tackled with different modeling methods. This heterogeneity introduces a challenge for the quality of the traceability and transformations among models, especially when aiming for automatic code generation. In this paper, we introduce a holistic conceptual-model programming method to generate code from different abstraction levels (from the problem space to the solution space),…
Single cell RNAseq provides a molecular and cellular cartography of changes to the human endometrium through the menstrual cycle
2018
SummaryIn a human menstrual cycle, the endometrium undergoes remodeling, shedding, and regeneration, all of which are driven by substantial gene expression changes in the underlying cellular hierarchy. Despite its importance in human fertility and regenerative biology, mechanistic understanding of this unique type of tissue homeostasis remains rudimentary. We characterized the transcriptomic transformation of human endometrium at single cell resolution, dissecting the multidimensional cellular heterogeneity of this tissue across the entire natural menstrual cycle. We profiled the behavior of 6 endometrial cell types, including a previously uncharacterized ciliated epithelial cell type, duri…
DSL Tool Development with Transformations and Static Mappings
2009
A tool development framework for domain-specific languages combining mapping and transformation based approaches is proposed in this research project. The combination of both approaches permits to use advantages and eliminate disadvantages as far as possible. First results are described including draft architecture for the framework implementing proposed ideas. A sketch of mapping definition facilities is presented. Initial implementation proposals are described as well. A template based graphical generation language Template MOLA for implementation algorithm description is introduced.
Optogenetics in Stem Cell Research: Focus on the Central Nervous System
2017
Stem cell-based therapies of CNS disorders represent a promising approach in translational and regenerative medicine. Stem cell-based tissue replacement and regeneration would, for the first time, offer a causal treatment strategy which is most likely not bound to a specific time window. Therapeutic strategies relying on this paradigm would require administration of exogenous stem cells to the CNS and/or the augmentation of endogenous stem cell capabilities. However, it remains unclear whether tissue replacement or bystander effects are required to induce such effects. Conventional experimental techniques will not be able to causally reveal such information, due to the complexity and coinci…
