The Good Practice Framework for European Sustainable Urbanisation through port city Regeneration. An operative guide
2020
The ENSURE research reveals that port cities are relevant in sustainable urban regeneration. Taking into account the sensitivity of urban and port contexts, and the solutions adopted across European port cities, this Guide delivers a set of key policies in order to plan and manage the regeneration process, and describes how to apply a suitable model for regeneration in port cities.
Sustainable regeneration of port cities
2020
Despite overall growth in the maritime sector, many European port cities are challenged by the migration of port-related activities from inner-city areas to other locations. The relocation of these economic activities results in the emergence of brownfield sites in strategic urban locations. Reusing these sites in a sustainable manner can contribute to preventing new land take and the regeneration of port cities. The city of Brest (France) is a good example of a port city that rejuvenated its inner-city area in a sustainable way.
DESIGN, MODELING, AND FABRICATION OF THERMOELECTRIC GENERATOR FOR WASTE HEAT RECOVERY IN LOCAL PROCESS INDUSTRY
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 The waste heat from energy company consumption sectors, when rejected into atmosphere, are useless and it contributes to global warming. Nowadays industrial activities and energy sectors (power stations, oil refineries, coke ovens, etc.) are the most energy consuming sectors worldwide and, consequently, the responsible for the release of large quantities of industrial waste heat to the environment by means of hot exhaust gases, cooling media and heat lost from hot equipment surfaces and heated products. Recovering and reusing these waste heats would provide an attractive opportunity for a low-carbon and less costly energy re…
Z paaudzes darba motivācijas noteicošie faktori un to ietekme uz uzņēmuma kopējo motivācijas sistēmu.
2017
Transition to distributed energy generation in Finland: Prospects and barriers
2015
Abstract Small-scale distributed energy generation is expected to play an important role in helping Finland increase its energy self-sufficiency. However, the overall strategy to date for promoting distributed energy remains unclear. It is not yet well understood which factors promote the growth of the distributed energy sector and what barriers need to be removed. In this article we present the results of a questionnaire directed at a panel of 26 experts from the distributed energy value chain and 15 semi-structured interviews with industry and non-industry representatives. We investigated, from a sociotechnical transition perspective, the possibilities and challenges of the transition to …
Governance of Projects: Generating value by linking projects with their permanent organisation
2019
Abstract There exists little research into how value is effectively generated by temporary projects from the wider perspective of a permanent organisation. This paper investigates empirically how ‘Governance of Projects’ – the way in which a single, permanent organisation identifies, creates, and subsequently harvests value through multiple projects – occurs in four private-sector case companies. Data were collected from in-depth interviews with a wide range of employees and from internal operational documents. These data were codified and analysed as evidence of the types and intensity of links between organisational elements. The results illuminate the complex interplay of links that are …
Professionals’ views on children’s service user involvement
2021
Purpose Children are gradually attaining recognition as service users and their involvement in service development has been advanced in recent years. This study draws on empirical research in social and health-care services designed for children and families. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how professionals understand children’s involvement as experts by experience. The focus is on professionals’ views and intergenerational relations. Design/methodology/approach The research data comprise 25 individual and 10 group interviews with managers and professionals working in social and health-care services in one Finnish province. The data were analysed using qualitative thematic analysi…
Comparative study assessing effects of sonic hedgehog and VEGF in a human co-culture model for bone vascularisation strategies.
2011
The morphogen sonic hedgehog (Shh) seems to mediate adult repair processes in bone regeneration and vascularisation. In this study we investigated the effects of Shh on co-cultures consisting of human primary osteoblasts and outgrowth endothelial cells in terms of angiogenic activation and vessel maturation in comparison to the treatment with the commonly used proangiogenic factor, VEGF. Both, stimulation with VEGF or Shh, leads to an increase in the formation of microvessel-like structures compared to untreated controls. In contrast to VEGF, proangiogenic effects by Shh could already be observed after 24 h of treatment. Nevertheless, after 14 days the angiogenic activity of OEC was compara…
Real-life patient journey in neovascular age-related macular degeneration: a narrative medicine analysis in the Italian setting
2021
Objectives To investigate the real-life experience of patients affected by neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), in the healthcare pathway for the management of the disease, using a "patient journey" and narrative method approach. Methods The patient journey of subjects affected by nAMD was designed using a process-mapping methodology involving a team from 11 Italian centres. Subsequently, narratives were collected from nAMD patients and family members. The interviews were analyzed using the narrative medicine methodology. Results Eleven specialized retina centres across Italy were involved and 205 narratives collected. In 29% of cases, patients underestimated their symptoms …
Sonic hedgehog promotes angiogenesis and osteogenesis in a coculture system consisting of primary osteoblasts and outgrowth endothelial cells.
2009
A number of previous studies documented the angiogenic potential of outgrowth endothelial cells in vitro and in vivo and provided evidence that therapeutic success could depend on coculture or coimplantation strategies. Thus, deeper insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying this pro-angiogenic effect of cocultures might provide new translational options for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. One promising signaling pathway in bone repair involved in neoangiogenesis and bone formation is the sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway. In this article, we focus on the effect of Shh on the formation of microvessel-like structures and osteoblastic differentiation in cocultures of primary os…
