Non-linear optical, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of amphiphilic inner salt porphyrinic systems

2016

Three zwitterionic meso-substituted A3B- and AB2C-porphyrins containing one sulfonato alkylpyridinium substituent and three or two alkoxy-substituted phenyl groups were synthesized in good yield and fully characterized as to their physicochemical properties by a variety of techniques. This new series of inner salt donor-acceptor meso-substituted porphyrin derivatives were prepared for possible application as amphiphilic probes for membrane insertion in the area of combined second-harmonic and two-photon fluorescence cellular microscopy. To this end, the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the compounds were characterized, together with their electrochemical and spectroelectrochemica…

Reconfigurable nonlinear response of dielectric and semiconductor metasurfaces

2021

Abstract Optically resonant dielectric and semiconductor metasurfaces are an emerging and promising area of nanophotonics and light–matter interaction at the nanoscale. Recently, active tuning of the linear response and nonlinear effects of these components has received an increasing amount of interest. However, so far these research directions have remained separated with only few sporadic works that study their combination beginning to appear in the literature. The evolution of nonlinear metasurfaces based on dielectric and semiconductor materials toward reconfigurable and dynamic components could potentially answer the demand of integrated on-chip components that realize essential functi…

Beyond good and evil: The impact of digital environment in family life

2019

Internet has changed the way we interact with others and has become an essential tool for daily activities. Children and adolescents are the main users of new digital technologies and their first contact with a screen happens increasingly earlier in life. Its premature use can be dangerous: technology represents a “supernormal stimulus” that can act on the brain reward circuit and affect neural development. In this article we describe the effects of technology on the brain, well-being, social and family relationships, highlighting both positive and negative ones: rather than defining a priori any type of technology as “good” or “bad”, we should consider how specific applications are used in…

The role of age and life course stage in digital consumption

2018

Digital technologies are an inherent part of consumer environments today. This dissertation investigates older adults’ usage of digital technologies by focusing on the role of age and life course stage in digital consumption in Finland. The dissertation applies theories of technology adoption and use, generations, and life course to examine older adults as digital consumers, the interrelationship between consumption and digital technologies and the effects of age and life course stage on digital consumption. The study utilises both quantitative and qualitative data from five (5) data sets. The results reveal that between the years 1999 and 2014, older adults reported more ecological and les…

Pat Barker’s Regeneration: Subverting the Masculinity of World War I Official Discourse

2014

Pat Barker’s Regeneration (1991) offers an imaginative deconstruction of the myth of the Great War as produced within British official patriotic rhetoric and in some of the best-known lyrics by Wilfred Owen (1893- 1918), who, together with Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967), has always been celebrated as one of the leading War poets. If Owen’s poetry partly entails the apolitical sublimation of the devastating facts of war through the ambiguous sentiment of pity, in Barker’s novel any suppression of emotions is posited as artificial and counterbalanced by a thorough exploration of those contradictory aspects of the Great War which official discourses have tended to obscure: the homoerotic experi…

An overview of a novel LC resonant device able to improve Power Quality in active and passive distribution networks

2004

Nowadays power distribution systems are under a rapid evolution. The widespread penetration of distributed generation is bringing about new operating conflicts, which are adding to traditional power quality issues. The paper aims to analyse the performance of a new LC device able to improve power quality in electrical distribution systems, even in presence of distributed generation units. The different possible applications of the device are shown and the performances are proved by means of computer simulation. The first experimental results are also presented.

Transparency in transactive energy at distribution level

2017

A recent report from the German Energy Agency analyzes the possible introduction of the blockchain technology in energy transactions in power distribution. The issue deserves attention since the extensive digitalization of business models puts new challenges to utilities in the power sector. The German decision makers in the energy field claim that blockchain appears as a close perspective and, at the same time, the Gartner hypecycle puts this technology at the peak of inflated expectations in 2016. Diffuse perception however provides hints for further investigation on the topic. This paper provides insight into the problem of peer-to-peer energy exchange from a technical perspective, provi…

Distributed optimal power flow for islanded microgrids: An application to the Smart Polygeneration Microgrid of the Genoa University

2016

In this work, the application of an original distributed optimal power flow method to test a microgrid in the Savona area, Italy is proposed. The microgrid shows different types of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and is connected to the main grid through a fixed power bus. Due to the high computational speed, the applied distributed Optimal Power Flow can be performed almost in real time, i.e. every 5 minutes or less. The operating solution found for generators, simply using local information, corresponds to a suboptimal condition with reduced losses, bus voltages and line currents within constrained intervals. The distributed optimization algorithm is iterative, but also fast. It is ba…

Effect of voltage deviations on power distribution losses in presence of DG technology

2015

Integration of distributed generation (DG) units in power distribution network has become increasingly attractive multi-faceted paradigm as economic and environmental factors drive new technologies to be more efficient and less polluting than their earlier counterparts. The installation of DGs impacts critically on the planning and operating characteristics of the distribution network. Type, location, number and capacity of DG are essential factors for studying the effect of DGs on the system behavior. In this paper the effect of DG on the power losses of a distribution network is investigated for different types of DG units. Also, the impact of DG on the voltage profile is demonstrated bef…
