The influence of ossein-hydroxyapatite compound ('Ossopan') on the healing of a bone defect.

1986

A study was undertaken in 60 adult rabbits in order to determine the effects of ossein-hydroxyapatite compound on bone healing. Standardized bony defects were produced in the distal femoral epiphyses, after which animals were randomized into four equal groups. An untreated group served as a control. One group received ossein-hydroxyapatite compound, 830 mg per day, a second group received bone mineral (ossein-hydroxyapatite compound reduced to ash, to remove organic constituents), 510 mg per day, and a third group received calcium carbonate, 650 mg per day. A series of fluorescent vital markers was administered to the animals from the 7th to the 32nd day after production of the defect. A th…

Will it ever become possible to prevent dopaminergic neuronal degeneration?

2008

Parkinsons disease (PD) is the second leading age-related degenerative brain disease in the world affecting millions of people. This neurological disorder disrupts the quality of life of patients and their families, exerts an enormous emotional and physical strain on caregivers, and has a large cost for society. Moreover, the increasing numbers of elderly people in the population will result in a sharp increase in the prevalence of PD. The understanding of its pathophysiology and treatment has advanced at a very impressive rate during past decades. Nevertheless, PD is still fatal and there is at present no cure for it. Furthermore, there are no proven therapies for prevention of PD and alth…

From obesity to Alzheimer's disease through insulin resistance

2021

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most frequent forms of dementia. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, characterized by presence of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Obesity is regarded as abnormal fat accumulation with deleterious impact on human health. There is full scientific evidence that obesity and the metabolic comorbidities (e.g., insulin resistance, hyperglycaemia, and type 2 diabetes) are related to Alzheimer's disease and likely in the causative pathway. Numerous studies have identified several overlapping neurodegenerative mechanisms, including oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammation. In this review, we present how obesit…

Expression of different isoforms of nitric oxide synthase in experimentally denervated and reinnervated skeletal muscle.

1997

Denervated muscle fibers express enhanced levels of stress and apoptosis-associated proteins and undergo apoptosis. In experimentally denervated and reinnervated rat facial muscle, we now evaluate changes in the expression patterns of different isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-generating nitric oxide (NO), which mediates oxidative stress and apoptosis. Physiological expression of NOS corresponds to a constant sarcolemmal staining pattern for neuronal NOS (nNOS) and a patchy sarcolemmal and weak sarcoplasmic labeling for the endothelial NOS-isoform, with no expression for inducible NOS (iNOS). Denervated muscle displayed distinct downregulation of nNOS with preserved expression of dys…

A systematic review on regenerative alveolar graft materials in clinical trials

2021

Abstract Background Alveolar cleft grafting is a necessary procedure to restore bone defects. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are regarded as a golden standard for investigating the efficacy of treatments. Nevertheless, risk of bias (RoB) can still affect the validity of these trials. We aimed to conduct a systemic review of all control trials (CTs) using regenerative materials for alveolar cleft reconstructions to evaluate their RoB and perform a meta-analysis of new bone formation. Methods Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE AND Google Scholar were searched up to October 2020. Thereafter, th…

Biologic Response of Inguinal Hernia Prosthetics: A Comparative Study of Conventional Static Meshes Versus 3D Dynamic Implants

2015

Despite improvements in prosthetics and surgi- cal techniques, the rate of complications following inguinal hernia repair remains high. Among these, discomfort and chronic pain have become a source of increasing concern among surgeons. Poor quality of tissue ingrowth, such as thin scar plates or shrinking scars—typical results with con- ventional static implants and plugs—may contribute to these adverse events. Recently, a new type of 3D dynami- cally responsive implant was introduced to the market. This device, designed to be placed fixation-free, seems to induce ingrowth of viable and structured tissue instead of regressive fibrotic scarring. To elucidate the differences in biologic respo…

Neomyogenesis in 3D Dynamic Responsive Prosthesis for Inguinal Hernia Repair

2018

Despite undisputed improvements, prosthetics hernia repair continues to be affected by unacceptable rates of complications. Postoperative adverse events such as discomfort and chronic pain represent a subject of increasing concern among the surgical community. Poor quality biologic response, stiff scar plates, and mesh shrinkage, a typical effect of conventional static meshes and plugs, are all indicated as the main reasons for many of the complications related to inguinal hernia repair. Even the conventional concept of treatment based upon a supposed reinforcement of the groin consequent to the fibrotic incorporation of meshes, would appear to be inadequate in the light of the latest scien…

Inhaled anesthesia in neurosurgery: Still a role?

2021

In patients undergoing craniotomy, general anesthesia should be addressed to warrant good hypnosis, immobility, and analgesia, to ensure systemic and cerebral physiological status and provide the best possible surgical field. Regarding craniotomies, it is unclear if there are substantial differences in providing general anesthesia using total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) or balanced anesthesia (BA) accomplished using the third generation halogenates. New evidence highlighted that the last generation of halogenated agents has possible advantages compared with intravenous drugs: rapid induction, minimal absorption and metabolization, reproducible pharmacokinetic, faster recovery, cardioprote…

Assessment of environmental AMD risk factors in a population of patients suffering from stroke and myocardial infarction

2010

International audience; Purpose: Stroke and myocardial infarction are common diseases occurring in patients suffering from Age Macular Degeneration (AMD). We assessed the rate of AMD and AMD risk factors in patients suffering from recent stroke or myocardial infarction. Methods: Patients suffering from a recent stroke or myocardial infarction (less than 1 month) benefited from a thorough ophthalmic examination with the following measurements and evaluations: visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus photography, Raman spectroscopy and macular OCT. In the same time a food questionnaire was dispensed. Finally, blood samples to measure fatty acids and lutein were performed. Results: 74 patie…
