Rimettere in valore gli spazi pubblici del territorio agrigentino

2015

The contemporary city poses a question about regeneration which increasingly finds its answer within the open spaces, where values and potential are recognized not only in ecological and environmental terms but also in terms of agricultural production. However these areas may have consequences on global sustainability and local urban-welfare, provoking identification processes with the places and regenerating the local identities as the only guarantee of survival in a harmonic territory. The research hypothesis is that the coastal areas and peri-urban spaces could contribute substantially to society and sustainable urban development as well as having an impact on social, physical, environme…

Intergenerational Effect of Early Life Exposure to Permethrin: Changes in Global DNA Methylation and in Nurr1 Gene Expression

2015

Environmental exposure to pesticides during the early stages of development represents an important risk factor for the onset of neurodegenerative diseases in adult age. Neonatal exposure to Permethrin (PERM), a member of the family of synthetic pyrethroids, can induce a Parkinson-like disease and cause some alterations in striatum of rats, involving both genetic and epigenetic pathways. Through gene expression analysis and global DNA methylation assessment in both PERM-treated parents and their untreated offspring, we investigated on the prospective intergenerational effect of this pesticide. Thirty-three percent of progeny presents the same Nurr1 alteration as rats exposed to permethrin i…

Optical Amplification in Hollow-Core Negative-Curvature Fibers Doped with Perovskite CsPbBr

2019

We report a hollow-core negative-curvature fiber (HC-NCF) optical signal amplifier fabricated by the filling of the air microchannels of the fiber with all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). The optimum fabrication conditions were found to enhance the optical gain, up to +3 dB in the best device. Experimental results were approximately reproduced by a gain assisted mechanism based on the nonlinear optical properties of the PNCs, indicating that signal regeneration can be achieved under low pump powers, much below the threshold of stimulated emission. The results can pave the road for new functionalities of the HC-NCF with PNCs, such as optical amplification, nonlinear frequen…

Pokolenie a lingwistyka

2016

The fundamental transformations of contemporary world, which have encompassed also science and language reality, have posed a peculiar challenge to linguistics. A relevant linguistics-founded response ought to be an increased interest in all ways of language existence (concrete communication acts and their products in the form of texts, a system language, individual language awareness and collective language consciousness) as well as their interactions. Its effect should be, besides many new empirical concepts, a fuller synthesizing theory.

Photocatalytic H2 evolution from aqueous solutions of oxygenated organic compounds in the presence of C3N4/reduced graphene oxide based photocatalysts

2022

Composites of C3N4/reduced graphene oxide have been used as a cheap and promising photocatalysts for triethanolamine and ethanol photo-reforming with H2 generation in aqueous solution. The rate of H2 production over the best performing photocatalysts reached 1,415 μmol·h-1·g-1 which increases up to 57,306 in the presence of 1% of Pt. The apparent quantum efficiency of the optimal material was 7 % by using both LED and natural sunlight irradiation

Synthesis, characterization, and cellular investigations of porphyrin– and chlorin–indomethacin conjugates for photodynamic therapy of cancer

2021

Indomethacin is a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with a strong selective inhibitor activity towards cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme that is highly overexpressed in various tumour cells, being involved in tumourigenesis. Concomitantly, porphyrins have gained much attention as promising photosensitizers (PSs) for the non-invasive photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. Herein, we report the design, and determine the singlet oxygen generation capacity and in vitro cellular toxicity of porphyrin- and chlorin-indomethacin conjugates (P2-Ind and C2-Ind). Both the conjugates were obtained in high yields and were characterized by 1H, 19F and 13C NMR as well as by high resolut…

Measurement and communication interfaces for distributed generation in smart grids

2013

The aim of this work is to perform a feasibility study on the measurement and communication strategies for the development of a new generation of interface devices for distributed generators and their integration on smart grids. The communication system can use one or more technologies, at the various levels, creating a low cost network infrastructure, in the framework of a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) architecture. As regards the measurements, the attention is focused on the anti-islanding protection, based on a hybrid solution, which makes use of local measurements and communications with the grid, at both MV and LV level by employing the PLC technology. Some simulatio…

An interface protection system with power line communication for distributed generators remote control

2014

The aim of this work is to present a narrow band power line communication (NB-PLC) interface protection system (IPS) for distributed generators (DGs); it has been developed according to the current standard CEI 0-21 and the requirements for smart grid applications. For such applications, the new IPSs have to implement new intelligent functions such as remote monitoring and control of DGs and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) inverters, not only in terms of disconnection but also of voltage regulation and power modulation by the utility control. The main feature of the developed IPS is the ability to interact with both the grid and the DG's and ESS's inverters. In fact, it can communicate with t…

A Dual Role for Hyperbaric Oxygen in Stroke Neuroprotection: Preconditioning of the Brain and Stem Cells

2018

Stroke continues to be an extremely prevalent disease and poses a great challenge in developing safe and effective therapeutic options. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has demonstrated significant pre-clinical effectiveness for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke, and limited potential in treating chronic neurological deficits. Reported benefits include reductions in oxidative stress, inflammation, neural apoptosis, and improved physiological metrics such as edema and oxygen perfusion, all of which contribute to improved functional recovery. This pre-clinical evidence has failed to translate into an effective evidence-based therapy, however, due in large part to significant inconsistenc…
